Category: Link Explorer

Cover all things links and the industry-leading link data discoverable in Link Explorer.

  • Hey Oliver The only contact information we are looking for is the mailto: email address tag in the source code of a page which is only if we decided to crawl the page. We do index many links without crawling. Also our data is not a live representation of links/domain status as we also could have indexed a link up to 190 days prior. Hope this helps!

  • Hi there Michael! Sorry to hear your link count has gone down. With each new index release, it's possible that older or less relevant links to your site have fallen out of the index. Generally, we suggest using a wide variety of backlink tools to get the most illustrative picture of how your site's backlink profile looks. OSE and Ahrefs index links differently and have different purposes. Ahrefs is good for quantity while OSE is great for finding higher quality links. Google Webmasters Tool is another great resource. In a situation like this we recommend working on building links from sites with high Mozrank. You can learn more about link building in our handy guide! I hope that helps!

  • Hi Cam We need to discover those links from external linking sources. I recommend making sure you are building links on sites that are getting fresh links to them from other authoritative sites. Hope this helps

  • Hi there - Kristina from Moz's Help Team here. I had a chance to peek into your Campaigns and I show that the latest crawls were performed on May 15th & May 17th. You can see the latest date your campaigns were crawled by clicking on the "Site Crawl" portion of your campaign and the date will be displayed on the upper right hand corner of that page: http://screencast.com/t/yPcd5qsf79Z Site Crawl within a campaign is automatically performed on a weekly basis. Since your sites were just last crawled on the 15th & 17th, they won't be crawled again until the 22nd & 24th, respectively. If you've made any changes to your site in the midst of that week, and you want to check if you've made any progress on the notices in your Site Crawl, you can always run a paired-down version of the Site Crawl (~3,000 pages) in the Crawl Test Research tool: https://moz.com/researchtools/crawl-test I hope this helps! In the future, please feel free to reach out to our team by emailing help@moz.com and someone from our team will be more than happy to assist with any questions about the tools that you have. Have a great day! -Kristina

  • Hi Eric, I think we've got our paths crossed slightly, i was talking about getting get the social follows, followers and posts count for each social profile associated with a domain. eg if you where comparing ford and bmw you would see : ford twitter : 100 followers, 20 following, 5 posts bmw twitter : 200 followers, 100 following, 20 posts ford facebook : 100 likes bmw facebook : 10 likes

  • Thanks Jordan and Tawny! That is a good idea to check in GWT for link profiles of our sites that we want to check. We would love to find also though a link checking tool that is quite comprehensive. Thanks Tawny for your recommendation to check out Ahrefs. It is a tool we have trailed and do find quite effective!

  • Well, shoot. Apparently, I'm not quite is familiar with UTF-8 characters and that distinction as I thought. Totally my mistake. The line for our tools falls closer to english character sets. Even seemingly small modifiers like accents can throw off our ability to accurately count or detect matches on pages. So, when it comes to Hebrew characters, we simply don't have a good way to handle it.

  • So if I want it to be a 301, and it is showing up as 301/302 Target, is that a bad thing? It's a site permanently moved.

  • Hi Andy! Kristina from Moz's Help Team here. Sorry to hear about the trouble! We were experiencing intermittent issues with Open Site Explorer yesterday and earlier today but the issue seems to be resolved now. Can you please try again and let me know if you're still seeing issues on your end? If you are, an example of a URL you're experiencing the issue on would be a great example to provide to our engineers. As always, you can email our team help@moz.com any time you're experiencing technical issues within the product for a faster turn-around time. I hope this helps! Please let me know if there's anything else I'm able to assist with. -Kristina

  • Hi there. Do any of those navigation links have nofollow attributes or 302 or 4xx statuses? Also it might be due to crawling history on your website. OSE relies on data from MOZscape crawls, which means that if your website is fairly new or haven't been indexed often enough for whatever reasons, it will be showing fewer pages. links etc overall. Also, since MOZbot has the crawl limit per domain, and you have thousands of pages, the issue might be that mozbot reaching limit before crawling every page. Hope this helps.

  • I  am sure it is not seeing the exact match because of the TM, I am just wondering if it is something I should consider changing or ignoring. I will send an email right now Chris. Thanks!

  • Haha, JUST figured it out, thanks Anthony. I had looked at Open Site Explorer, but perhaps not while logged in to that particular client project, because I didn't get the side bar the first time I looked. Got it and that's exactly what I needed. Thanks again!

  • Hi there! Out of curiosity, when you say that pages are being marked as spam, do you mean they're being given a spam score? And what is that score?

  • Hi there! It looks like we haven't indexed the new version of your site yet. It can take a few index updates for your current URL to appear in Open Site Explorer, so keep an eye on our index update schedule here and check out our new link data with each update. I hope this helps - thank you! Kevin Help Team

  • Greetings Stacey, If your site is built on WordPress, you can use the Yoast SEO plugin and set categories to "noindex". You can find this in the menu for "Titles &Metas" and then "Taxonomies" in the Yoast plugin. I did that recently for tags, categories and archives within a client's blog to remove duplicate content notices in my Moz reports. That being said, it MAY have some impact on your position in the SERPs. I hope that helps. Best Regards, Mark

  • Hi Edgar, Dmytro is correct, these tools aren't 100% accurate, they're just used to give you an indication of volume and quality. I suspect the main reason for this is the sheer volume of websites out there. To provide 100% accurate backlink data, they'd have to be crawling billions of pages every single day to detect new/lost links. It's not uncommon for a new link to take anywhere from a couple of days to 3 or 4 months to show up. As a general rule, the more popular a site (think New York Times, not a high-traffic spam directory), the faster your link will be seen, though not necessarily.
