Chat through best practices for conversion rate optimization.

  • Sorry about that I miss read the question completely  perhaps you can do some A/B testing on the Food Container for Dogs page**.** The other pages that are converting well, do they look similar? do the offer anything different? I would test the page to see if the traffic that is coming in is finding what they are looking for. If you do take down a page you can do a 301 redirect and transfer link juice.

  • I appreciate the responses. Wasn't sure if there was really a "standard" or not. We'll get some Google experiments set up. Maybe it'll be something worth writing about if it's interesting enough! Thanks a ton for the input!

  • Try some AB or multi variate testing. It neednt cost the earth, or anything. You can use content experiments via Analytics. A few comments on current home page: The images on the home page look like ads rather than navigation. I dont think that works. What is it you want people to do when they get to the home page? Do a wine search? If so make the wine form search facility more prominent. I would include 'any' in your dropdowns. Its feasible people get to your site and dont know what winery name they want. Get rid of 'start over' you dont need it until they've done a a search. Look at your in-page analytics and see where people navigate to from the home page. That will tell you alot about what you should be featuring more on that page. Andy

  • EGOL is quite correct regarding the profitability of Adwords campaigns particularly in highly competitive spaces. I think it's really important to have a clear idea of what the Lifetime value is for customers acquired through this channel, so you know when to hold and know when to gold int terms of ad and keyword bids.

  • Again my gut instinct is to have them select a password. But, that may not be the best for our customers. Case in point, I don't think that's the way SEOMoz Pro works. I think they email a password, and I still joined. Go figure.

  • The conversion factor depends more on the video/offering itself as opposed to the voice. definitely, a voice is better than just music. It makes it more personal when you have a voice in the background as opposed to video. Here's a link to a good post on video link building

  • Google doesn't have a cert but the two providers I'd recommend would be: Market Motive: Conversion Optimization Training and Certification Marketing Experiments Landing Page Optimization course

  • Absolutely. If the content of the page matches the apparent query intent, then the problem may be that people simply don't want to give their money to this company. Does the site look professional? Does it look reputable? Is the information laid out in a clear, attractive way? Are the pictures bright and appealing? It's the difference between walking into a dim, dirty shop with tacky decor and messy displays and a comfortable, beautiful department store. Conversion rate optimization is a huge topic -- as big as SEO itself. Rand did a high-level overview webinar about CRO recently, but they had repeated technical problems so I don't think they uploaded it to the SEOmoz webinar section (http://www.seomoz.org/webinars). He recommended Conversion Rate Experts' blog (http://www.conversion-rate-experts.com/).

  • Shouldn't be an issue - Just make sure you update the <video<span id="GRmark_2ce5acbd7b47b7ac2b2825e56148aff00b0d7c8d_::0" class="GRcorrect">:duration> field in your video sitemap to reflect the extended length.</video<span> Alternatively, can you just add a JavaScript link overlay as the call to action? You wouldn't need to increase the length of the video to do this.

  • I work at a development company and we have our own bespoke CMS system. We just want a star feature really, so we can hook up rich snippets. If there is a plugin that doesnt cost much that would be great, getting one of our developers to do it here would cost the client more than they are currently willing to pay.

  • If you use Google Analytics there the Experiment area within the Content Tab. It's easy to setup - only takes a few minutes - it's also free But in order to use A/B testing (split tests) you need to know what you want to test. Some good resources can be found with some case studies that can give you a direction on conversion rate experts blog - http://www.conversion-rate-experts.com/ There are however a lot of resources out there to give you a direction before you start split testing. Hope it helps.

  • You could have a model box appear on the page which contains the form (example: http://ui-patterns.com/image/2042/0/0/614) you can strip out any boxes which close the modal box, you could also put a delay on the box appearing so wait 10 secs so they start reading then modal box. When they fill out the form and click the submit button a cookie is stored locally saying 'done'. Next time they visit the site the website check to see if the cookie done exists, if so don't show box, if not show box.

  • Thanks! I suppose we have options. I am leaning towards going with EX 1 just for consistency's sake to keep all the brands together. Thanks again!

  • Nice work! Move these up a little higher in the SERPs and you will be running your competitors out of town. On the non-product pages you can place obvious house ads that show you have a product page where a purchase and full details can be found.  Or you can place "add to cart" buttons on the other two pages. To take full advantage of this each of your pages could be optimized for different variants of the keyword. I don't get it why some people think this is a problem. Cannibalization?  Hell yes!  You are ready to eat your competitor's lunch.

  • You should be using Google Content Experiments. It used to be called Google Conversion Optimizer. You can find Google Experiments in GA > Content > Experiments. There is a video there you can watch. You can test up to 6 version of a single webpage.

  • Thanks for the fast reply. My fear is that Smith Computers will not get an audience from within Google + and that the audience from within will look for plain computers and not what we do (and unfortunately we cannot change our brand now ). I think agree with you and will go with 3 or 4.

  • yes, yes, yes I've added author to non article/blog post pages and had it appear in SERPs. Having the image in the listing usually improves CTR.
