There are a few different ways to speed up your site. 1 -My personal favourite Cache plugin is LiteSpeed as my host uses a lightspeed server (they are popular) who is your host? 2- sign up and use Cloudflare. Both W3 Total Cache and Litespeed will interface with it. 3- Use GTmetrix to analyse your site along with page speed insights. It has a better breakdown of problems 4- Quite often it's the images that slow down your site as they are not optimised.  Smush does a decent job but my favourite is ShortPixel.  You can buy an amount of image compression for a small amount and leave it live. That is true. Currently there is zero income generated by the site but thats the goal. They believe this will be the start of a even better DA which will bring more traffic and it will make worth the investment. I'm personally not complete sold on the idea but I believe this should be the first step to then be able to monetize it in different ways.

Canonicals will help with the trailing slash issue, but that's not the sole reason for your traffic loss. Read up on Angular and address those issues first. I think you should not be affected by the SEO of the page, nor should you be penalized by Google. Google penalizes when there are many hidden links to other pages. It is considered a bad practice. For example, years ago, people hid keywords with the background color of the web (penalized by google severely), this is detected by the different changes of the google search engine.
