  • Thanks, Paddy! That was well timed! I am in the process of developing a blog and am lining up my ducks SEO-wise before I go live. I think I have opened a can of worms. I have asked the question of StudioPress - why a page allocated to Posts Page is not canonicalised, and neither are paginated pages. Category pages are canonicalised but I'd rather show a dedicated blog page as opposed to a category page for the blog (I only have one category). I don't want to use a plugin. I have even been tempted by Ghost but looks like I need a PhD to figure that out! Thanks again

  • Sometimes branded keywords help a lot in ranking. If you are working for a brand website or any other brand business then try to work for brand keywords as I do for my cornerstone built homes page.

  • .../category-green/some-product.html .../category-brand/some-product.html .../category-widget/some-product.html .../some-product.html clean URL should exist and the canonical tag within the top three URLs should be pointing to this clean product URL. The 3 above can be crawled and indexed, but the canonical is assisting Google in understanding which is the correct product URL.  A product can rightly exist in multiple categories. If the platform is such that a clean product URL is not possible (urghh!), then a strategy needs to be developed to choose one of the category/product URLs as the canonical. My preference though is to have a category structure and all product links coming from those category pages are clean product URLs in the first place, with self referencing canonicals.

  • Hello there! You've come to the right place. Local SEO hinges on the physical location of your business and its customers. If you have a physical store in NYC, you can work towards competing for visibility in Google's local packs for users and queries surrounding that city. If you have a physical location in LA, same story. What you can't do is hope your NYC store will show up for users in LA. Local search doesn't work that way. Rather, you'd need to pursue organic rankings and paid advertising in markets where your business lacks a physical location. _Moz just published the Essential Local SEO Strategy Guide, which will teach you all the basics of local SEO for free! Hope it helps: _https://moz.com/local-seo-guide

  • And actual answer is "it depends". For example linking a "contact us" or "about us" is important. But on other side linking "Privacy Policy" or "Terms of Service" isn't somehow important. Except if you're in Germany, Austria, Switzerland where people are looking for Imprint pages. One of easiest ways to fix this is to make links to be non-crawlable: https://youtu.be/PFwUbgvpdaQ?t=600 because bot didn't click on web page. I hope that this will helps you! Peter

  • Best practices is to remove and noindex such parameters. One of latest projects was Ecommerce shop with 5k products and over 220k indexed pages from categories. So you need to AVOID indexing such ?results=16 or ?order=asc or ?search=test and to have PURE and only pagination. Example: https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/product/epoxy-and-adhesives https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/product/epoxy-and-adhesives?page=2 https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/product/epoxy-and-adhesives?page=3 https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/product/epoxy-and-adhesives?page=4 are ONLY valid categories pages. If you have infinite scroll situation is described here: https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2014/02/infinite-scroll-search-friendly?hl=en I hope that this will help you! Peter

  • For increasing DA and PA you have to make quality backlinks for your website. As an example, I already saw there were daily jumble answers of a website that DA got increased with quality backlinks.

  • Outside of the ordinary on-page SEO, focus on speed and responsiveness. I would look at putting your site in https://www.webpagetest.org/ and see if you can prioritize scripts and optimize images.  Also, run it through Chrome Dev Tools (F12) and play around. One example is look at the mobile view in there. Is the mobile page to long? Does it need different  a different CTA? Where can you use media queries to hide and etc.? Good luck!

  • Test it out, or try to get some more local links that will help you rank for the other cities. What I've noticed over the years with Google is that they're pretty good at figuring out the local intent but still serving the same landing page for different cities. Or the opposite way of ranking the local city page for a generic keyword term. With this, you can try to position a few pages to focus on the specific cities and see if it works or if Google is still ranking your main pages. That might save you some headache of having to create dozens of pages but meanwhile could help you see what signals are being picked up.
