  • Thanks for the input. I have never done split testing in Google Adwords, but maybe now is a good time to start. "...Google has gotten better and better at sending multiple keyword results to pages that have clustered semantic relevance; meaning, a page can talk about boat sales in Michigan, focusing on pontoon and sail boats, seasonal watersport recreation unique to Michigan, other localized events, etc and see strong results in each, all delivered to the same page." I agree with you there. A few years ago, I would say we need to build two separate pages, but now I don't think it is necessary. Thanks again!

  • This kind of depends on the size of the site, how frequently Google tends to crawl the site, strength of site, etc. Since this change is part of a larger structural change within corporate I'd ask them for a press release and link(s) from the main site to the new domain in conjunction with its launch.  That will add another additional layer to what you're planning to do: GWT change of address 301 Redirection New links at time of redirection pointing to new site. All three of which will induce further crawling by the engines and help speed up the process. Since you're dealing with mature sites it shouldn't be a dramatic amount of time if you stay on top of it.

Ryan - I am talking to CMS Source about these options; it's not possible with the current configuration but it looks like we may be able to change this with a bit of development work. Sean - Thanks, I had considered the canonical, which would at least prevent a duplicate content issue although I think we need to take measures to stop this admin. subdomain being accessible which this won't help with.   • Howard, As far as i know there is not an exact number you are allowed to link to form content. I looked at your page (disney part 1) and the number of links is not to high for the amount of content but I think it's mostly everyone's opinion. A thing that stood out for me: When I visit your site I see a huge header section with social buttons, site-search, logo, menu and a huge H1. Then I just see a small portion of your content with more adds then content. This could get you hit by Panda/Penguin. Also I see 2 search columns? One on the top right of the page and one in the main section of the site on the right just above the Most popular by Views section. Why? I would suggest keeping just 1 search bar, making your header a lot narrower (lower) and removing some of the ads on top and placing them further down in the content. That just my 2 cents on this. As for your question about the outbound links: If the links adds value to the page and is logical then you can keep it but keep it all to a minimum. Jarno

  • Youtube back links do not count toward your link profile. You need to build quality links by reaching out to newspapers, writers, bloggers, make friends with them and ask them to write a article. or better yet, give them an idea that writing about something you know will make there blog better. Then they will link to you and youll get quality links.

  • How big is the site? If it's say, under a few hundred pages then you can just leave the structured URLs, and I usually prefer this for good UX and architecture. If the site is much bigger, it might be a little more complex and the specifics could affect things a little.

  • Depending on the platform, your client might already have access to an m.domain mobile site. Some of the older platforms, like Volusion, haven't even offered responsive designs yet, which is part of what makes them so expensive for their customers. They basically have to pay a company for a complete template redesign. In my opinion, the responsive design is best practice for SEO, but an m.domain site would improve user experience which can lead to higher CTR and higher conversions. If your client cannot afford to move just yet, then the m.domain is the lesser of two evils. It will improve customer experience and hopefully conversions, and then maybe moving to a responsive design in 6 months would be an option. I just went down this road with the company I work for. We were in Volusion and just simply out grew it. So we moved to Big Commerce. With the size of our site, it cost us about $1400 a month. The responsive designs were free, and they handled the entire migration for us. At the end of the day, the sacrifice of changing platforms didn't cost us much more than we were spending with Volusion, and the benefits of improved SEO and User Experience will pay for the swap within months. I am not sure what your current situation is, but if you haven't looked into Big Commerce, I would definitely try. It can't hurt to present all three scenarios to the client. At least they will be able to weigh the pros and cons of everything. Staying where they are without an m.domain, staying where they are and adding an m.domain, or moving to a more advanced system like Big Commerce with a fully responsive design.

  • Guess we have to set up a second CMS, content etc. OK... submit to them. If I ran a plumbing site and one brand tried to tell me how to run my biz I would do an analysis and determine where they fall into the market importance.   I might decide to.... A) quit selling their CrappyBrand Plumbing Supplies B) quit selling all other brands and focus on their CadillacBrand Plumbing Supplies C) continue as I am and see if they cancel me D) build a little outhouse to sell their crappy stuff E) keep my current site and put a lot of effort into a site that sells only their brand Consider doing an analysis before you spend any effort to kiss their feet.  My crystal ball says there are going to be hundreds of sites selling their CrappyBrand Plumbing Supplies and nobody is going to be making good money from them. The aim is not to manipulate the rankings, Your client might not be trying to manipulate rankings.   But the plumbing manufacturer is trying to flood the SERPs and manipluate vendors.  My decision making would not be.... "Yes Sir".... or even binary.

  • Just to update on this i too know about Google doesn't always use our Meta tags. But its very weird when i see another meta tags when i search for mydomainname.com. But when i search for the keywords the SERP shows the meta tags i have used in my page. Weird !

  • Well said - engagement > page views. Google's smart enough to understand that on more complex sites and with more complex technology/JS/etc, those aren't always perfect corollaries for one another.
