  • We do get a lot of scrapers Google doesn't manage it all that well, unfortunately. There are a couple of cues: (1) As Harald said, Google does try to determine which came first. This can be tough, because auto-scrapers actually can get indexed before sources in some cases. Having a solid crawl structure, XML sitemaps, pinging relevant sites, etc. can help. (2) If the sites link back to you (on purpose or accidentally, by including links you put in the content), it's a signal to Google that you're the source. (3) If you're a high-authority site, you've generally got an edge. Most of our scrapers are pretty weak sites, so we're not in much dangers. Unfortunately, I've seen times when scrapers outranked original content. Proper syndication, with back-links or other signals (like syndication-source or cross-domain canonical) can definitely be good for sites. Having a ton of scrapers on a site that's relatively new/weak can be very negative, unfortunately. Then again, most new sites don't have a ton of scrapers, so it does balance out a little.

  • A couple of clarifications here. Links from .edu (as well as .gov and .mil) are often thought to have more value because not everyone can register those domains, though there is debate as to whether they do have more value or not. Anyone can obtain a .org domain, no matter what its purpose. Here's a good post from Cyrus on the SEOmoz blog about building links with directories: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/seo-link-directory-best-practices

  • You say that this is a very good site. Instead of worrying about it I would be yelling YEEE HAAA! out the window on every morning that those links are still there.... and depending upon who owns that site I would send him/her thank you gifts of wine, imported beer, chewing tobacco or roses just as a thank you. That's what I think.  Others might disagree.

  • Is the best tactic. I already tried the fast way and I failed!

  • This is also a good answer if you already have the traffic! (my point of view). Thanks

  • Thanks Jane, Alec, for the great answers. I'll concentrate on SERP more than PR from now on. And avoid directories!

  • I don't have any inside knowledge of how search crawlers work and have not done tests that confirm that all of the links on my pages are getting crawled. But, I don't limit myself to 100 links per page.  I have sites that have over 200 links per page on every page and they do great in the search engines.  I am not saying that I am doing best practice.  I probably am not doing best practice. I am just saying what I am doing and these sites are doing great. I have a number of pages that are nicely organized industry directories.  They link out to hundreds of external websites.  They rank at #1in Google for their targeted terms beating .gov .edu and same-industry heavyweights.  If I limited the number of links to 100 these would be multipage lists that would make visitors cuss loudly.

  • @ Istvan, I did email them tonight so hopefully I will get some answers. I will review the videos.  I also read the articles you suggested last night.  A lot of info to digest but I am sure it will eventually sink in.   I will see if I can go and meet with the SEO I found online at their office.  No communication in this relationship at all! @ SEO Brent, Yes no one will ever find me one these directories and most don't see to load very well. I think they are just going for links since I only have 4 root directory links right now.  I also thought that the number of links was important but I guess the relevancy part is just as important. I am going to have a sit down with them and it the channels of communication do not open up then it is time for a divorce. (I am leaning towards the firing though because the directories are not relevant and non of my competitors are on them, although most of the domain ranks were 40 or higher. Thank you.

  • Honestly, submit and forget it. You could wait months, and I don't know of any secret way. If you're following the DMOZ rules, then no submission service is really going to help. In many cases, there just aren't enough editors. The other issue is that many new DMOZ links are on deep pages, some of which aren't even getting indexed. No indexation means no link-juice. See my blog post from last year: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/wheres-the-love-dmoz At the end of the day, it's just one link. It's nice to have, but your efforts are better spent elsewhere, IMO.

  • The problem with all of this is that "automation" can lead to just about anything depending on the service you use. It IS possible to get an effective number of anchor text and contextual links with the right set up, especially if you generate your own link network that only you use, but then you have the problem of dupe content. The RIGHT way to do it is far too time consuming to make it worth your while unless you can find a legit link builder/article writer  on odesk that will make the time/cost problem go away, but even then they usually don't speak English as a first language and you end up spending a lot of time rewriting the articles because the grammar and syntax is absurd.. Also what does "Searching for your exact topic in Google, and finding incomplete resources.  Ask them for links" mean? I didn't understand what you meant by incomplete resources. Thanks

  • Robert, Not even sure where I saw the 95,96 and 96 rankings on SEOmoz but the list said all the hundreds of links were made in the last day ( I think this was an error) I don't believe it was PA or DA I think it was some other metric but I can't find the page.  Basically I just searched the links on a competitor.  Anyway the PR or Google Page Rank tool I used had the sites on a scale of 1-10 and all 20 sites the competitor bought were ranked 0-1 with only one ranked a 2.  When I saw the 95,96 etc rank by SEOmoz I wanted to purchase the links right away since my competitor did but I thought I would ask questions first on here. Thanks for your feedback. Istvan, I will check out the links....thank you.

  • As has been said it doesn't make a difference. Most people would think however that the link looks neater without the http://, so I'd say that's usually preferable.
