  • Interesting question. I'd bet that they just serve up normal results in many cases, unless there's an example where it happens frequently and unintentionally. For example, when I search "Google Seattle restaurants", it's a bunch of google offers and search engine marketing discussions, not the normal results for "Seattle restaurants" or even local results for that matter. Just did a couple other quick tests on mobile and desktop and I don't see any examples of them ignoring it. If there's an example where it happens frequently and people don't click on the results, I'd imagine they'd start testing different styles of results, but I doubt that'd be based on the fact that "Google" was included so much as the fact that people weren't finding the results useful.

  • Personally I own Market samurai and have been using it for years for keyword research and competition analysis. Great thing is that they are now using Majestic SEO API to do backlinks analysis. It's a good companion to OSE here. I believe around 150 bucks (less with coupons) is worth your money for such a tool, and it's a one-time payment with free updates. Tried the free version of wordtracker but always came back to market samurai and OSE. HTH.

  • Yes.  You understand it correctly. For an example search Google.com for "tempered windshield glass" You might see wisegeek with two listings at #2 and #3

  • Good morning Cyrus Thank you for taking the time and answering my question. I also read your article, very informative. Thank you for sharing however I do have a follow up question. I completely understand what you mean when you say there is no longer anything such as rank but when I do a search on Google and we are number 1 or 2 for a specific keyword and SEOMOZ shows that we rank number 35 there is a big difference and was wondering what can attribute to the big difference. Is there something that SEOMOZ takes into effect that we can replicate when we do a Google search to achieve similar results? The reason I ask is so that we can see what impacts the results and best optimize our website. Thanks again for all your help, feedback and sharing of information.

  • In many SEO reports keywords that rank above position 50 are left off the report. This is because keywords ranked above 50 tend to jump position a lot so they are of of no real reporting value. In many reports you will see "not in the top 50" or ">50".

  • Hello, You're getting it right. If your generical keyword is trasnformed into a new one, more specific, Mr. Google is going to give it a different value. But if the thing "rice pudding" is what everyone that types jsut "rice" searchs, so it won't be a problem. And if you put two words together, one keyword and one without meaning, you're not going to be so relevant only by it. For example: SEOMaster, is clearly SEO + Master. SEOMoz is not that clear, because the second word has no meaning, and Google will try to understand anything but SEO, so it won't bring much points as the one above. Hope it helps, ;]

  • Good shout, google insights might help break it down, if you export a csv from KWT then it breaks it down by month so that might help!

  • Hi Nick, This works a charm for CPC and in theory for Organic I could run a small Adword campaign for every keyword but for a site with over 300 products this would be a haunting task when I'm trying to find multiple keywords for each product. Thanks.

  • I never use the actual amazon banner ads because they are so bad, I try my best to make it look like a blog and only put images and links with relevant products. I had a buy it now on one product but it didn't seem to work at all. I think I just really need to get up higher and of course I wasn't expecting much with a cheap stuffed animal BUT hopefully I can repeat this success with a higher priced product in a different niche, rank in the top and make a few bucks. I still get a little sad about my adsense but I have heard some really good stuff about Amazon from some seemingly reliable sources. Can't cry over spilled milk though Thanks again and I will post an update if I get up in the top and start seeing some more dough! It's gonna be hard work because most of the other sites are either big chains or pretty decent. All except one which recently came out of nowhere to rank #3. STRANGE THING is that it just has an error page that says Index of with a link to ftp.quota???? I checked it out with open site explorer it has some crazy Page Rank or Authority whatever of 80. I checked some of the backlinks and they were very odd with Arabic writing on them.  Not sure what that site is about or where it came from about a week ago but I couldn't imagine it staying around long and hopefully it will go away and improve my rankings!

  • Google has stated that meta keywords do not influence rankings. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/keywords-meta-tag-in-web-search/ You will get better results from your efforts by focusing on other factors that are known to directly influence rankings.

  • Hi Adam Here are a list of keyword tools/techniques I use for our keyword research Google trends - monitor seasonal trends for certain search terms throughout the year Competition sites - check out your competitors within your sector/subject areas - It's amazing how many large sites still incorporate defined keywords that appear in the meta keywords section of the site! Hitwise - If you have enough luck/big enough budget to access this tool - this can unearth a goldmine of keywords to target as well as their clickstream report of what keywords/search terms were used before and after leaving your site Google insights - provides alternative keywords to consider based on the keywords you add Open Site Explorer - enter your competitor site and run an anchor text report - what key terms are included Competitor blog sites - analyse your competitor blog sites - usually packed full of keywords they are trying to rank for that is used to point back to their main site Analytics - Your existing analytics tool should provide you with a vast range of search terms to commence new campaigns and unearth long tail keywords, also check out your google webmaster tools Simon
