  • Yep - technically a new keyphrase so you will just have to add it.

  • There was a method by advertising on Adwords to see the real searches for exact match keywords, Google Adwords is WAY inaccurate.

  • If you have the resources, ideally you want to be running them as independent microsites that eventually redirect through to your main site (ie when the user decides he wants to buy whatever your selling)

  • Thanks Daniel! The reason I was asking is if we use keywords w/o trademark symbols we may run into legal issues hence we were thinking of optimizing the page for keyword with symbol in it.

  • Also, right now, each page has a different title. ex: 20x25x4 furnace filter Customers are searching for filter size in the long tail. If I use one products and 50 differents size option, I won't be able to use page title for a specifics furnace filter size. Does anybody has a solution?

  • Google seems to indicate that Pilotenausbildung is the correct version and the others are misspellings. I would optimize for Pilotenausbildung, but also make sure you sprinkle the other two versions in a few times onto your page.

  • The key thing to do is to have unique content on both pages but the content may still be optimised or focused upon the same keyword or phrase as the other page. Also make sure each page has unique titles, meta description etc so that the search engine has no reason to look at the pages and think that it would be best to just display the one page due to duplicate content issues.

  • Probably not a bad idea. Also maybe focus on making your other elements / keywords more important for search engines if they aren't already? just make it very easy for search engines to read your content, use and headings where applicable and relevant around your keywords

  • This is definitely not the best technique to quickly see competition heat as it could be easily misleading. Why? The # of results with certain keyword phrases in title does matter as it does show the # of competitors but what it doesn't show is the authority of those competitors and if they are active as of now, and its anybody's guess what could happen when you go into a fight and without knowing your opponent. Say, you are optimizing for entertainment/celebrity related keywords, you can do quick 'intitle' search and get quickly scared as it may seem as there is a lot of competition looking at the # of results.. however, if you dig a bit deeper its easy to see that majority of pages are low authority pages and are easy to beat as they do not do heavy optimizing (since entertainment traffic doesn't convert well...which means less $ for optimizing).  So my 2 cents...dig a bit deeper, check the top results in first 2 pages at least and look at their authority. Its worth spending a few hours to  know your enemy before you go against them.. rather than spending months in optimizing later and realizing your enemies are much stronger, more active, aggressive and have deeper pockets.

  • But should I choose terms that we rank for in the top 50 results to try to move us up, or choose terms that we're not even in the top 50 yet? (Or a little of both) And our competitors do have high DA/PA Scores and MozTrust Ranks, but I think it'd still be smart to target some of their KW phrases I noticed they rank for and my company shows up after them, correct?

  • Thank you all for the swift and informative responses. This put this issue to rest, going to stick with the full URL, http://www.smallbusinessdoer.com. I already have the smallbizdoer.com and smallbizdoer.ca URL's 301 forwarding to http://www.smallbusinessdoer.com.

  • Hi Peter, I like jonsantillan's list--Google trends is an especially sharp tool for uncovering blog post ideas in your niche. Find what's "hot" and be the first to write about it. If your content is good, it may become the source that everyone refers back to (i.e. major link bait). Another tool that I've found really helpful for uncovering long-tail keywords is Market Samurai.  It's a piece of software that runs on Adobe Air (any operating system). Beyond generating extra keywords, MS has a lot of filters that help you prioritize your keywords, even beyond what Wordtracker offers. It will also return the daily estimated CTR for owning the #1 organic rank!. You can start with a free version, but even after the trial is over you can use the keyword research functions without restriction.

  • That is certainly possible, and it's a smart thing to do in many cases. The easiest example of this that I could think of was the terms "buy mens nike shoes" and "buy womens nike shoes". store.nike.com ranks highly for both results, but with an almost completely different set of pages for each. Many large brands will have several similar items that are differentiated by the long tail, so you should be able to find more examples fairly easily.
