Hi, I ran a competitive link analysis report today and back came quite a few domains that 2 or more of my 5 main competitors link from.

Is it worth me submitting links to these sites? And would i be best served submitting my homepage URL or submitting a brand page such as Creative Recreation Trainers? I want to target that brand but don't want to do it if my main URL is better?

Any ideas? See below my report.

Interaction is good I think. I am having decent chatter with customer base and also receiving followers, tweets, retweets and recommendations from football players, dj's, musicians, local celebs, actors, tv/media personalities etc.. so i feel I am getting our name out there.

When I say small budget, we have a smaller one than competitors but if needed we could spend approx £500 p/m on doing a SEO Backlink campaign. But would need to know if this is the main thing we should target.

Also when you say PR, often when gaining links, the root domain is high PR but the page your article ends up on is low PR.

Does this matter? And how do you get a high PR article/link on the main domain that will last?

Often blog posts stay on the main domain front page for a week then they ae archived are they not?

My theory is yes I do. But the problem I have is a small budget and competitors who have a big one.

My problem is we have a small number of external links and linking root domains.

My profile from a domain analysis read like this in March and then May...

External Followed Links - Mar 103 | May 257
Total External Links ------- Mar 114 | May 276

Total Links ------------------- Mar 5,577 | May 24,425

Followed Linking Root Domains - Mar 24 | May 47
Total Linking Root Domains ------- Mar 30 | May 55

As you can see, progrss is being made considering I do this part time for a family website. But what I need is a big bump in these numbers as my 3 compeitors are pulling in silly numbers such as 308, 7000 and 45000 external followed links.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to compete with this realisticy without spending a fortune? I am putting the time and effort in so anything you guys can do to help the better.

I am using twitter and facebook quite a bit, and seen growth on Twitter go from 40 to 1,350 followers over 7 months. Visits to the site over 7 months have gone up 50% as well.

However sales are still looking about 10-15% up on previous year.

I need more links coming into the site don't I? And what is the most important part of the Domain Analysis, what shoudl I want to increase first and foremost?

I think point 3 is the biggest one. instead of searching facebook for you or remembering your facebook page url, they will be remembering your main domain url which is good for future business.

You can follow as many people as you like daily. Tweet wise, I think after 250 tweets or so, you get asked to come back later. Wait an hour or so and everything should be ok again.

Remember, you want an audience that are interested in you and your service. No point having 50,000, 95 year olds following you if you sell Club 18-30 holidays.

Pick your audience to follow, then try engage and interact with people who you think are good for you. Usually if you follow a celeb and reply to their post, their followers could see that reply and may follow you, so you get people interested in the same stuff.

Get retweets from anyone is good, so maybe be cheeky, ask for a follow so you can DM them, then DM them some sales speech on how you can work together or whatever.

It takes time, over 7 months I have grew our twitter from 40 to 1,350 followers. Which I think is great progress. All natural followers from interacting with my audience and others.

thanks for your responses. the press release hasn't been submitted to a pr website. i have emailed indivual sites/blogs and newspapers to see if they will publish the charity night we did.

so it is all real news of an event that actually happened.

We recently held a charity night in store. And had a few local celebs turn up etc...

We created a press release to send out to various media outlets, within the press release were hyperlinks to our site and links on certain keywords to specific brands on our site.

My question is, should we be sending a different press release to each outlet to stop the duplicate content thing, or is sending the same release out to everyone ok?

We will be sending approx 20 of these out, some going online and some not.

So far had one local paper website, a massive football website and a local magazine site. All pretty much same content and a few pics.

Any help, hints or tips on how to go about this if I am going to be sending out to a load of other sites/blogs?

Just a quick one to see what peoples thoughts are regarding links.

I have just gained a free link on a .gov website in the UK. In one of their offers pages, will this provide any link value or domain trust to me and what can the benefits be SEO wise from having a link on a government domain?

The link is just the website url with a a few lines of text detailing our address etc... so its not got any anchor text regarding targetting one of our brands.

It is equallly, less or more important to target anchor text links to specific brands or to get good high quality links from trusted sites such as the .gov one I have linking to my root domain?

The website is a local council website in the UK. And was listed by a member of their staff, who only list in the offer page if your offering discount to council members etc..., so its not a spammed page or anything like that.

What are peoples views on anchor text links vs domain url links?

I agree the overflow could be dropped. And replace that with a good 4-5 lines of text about the brand.

Re 1) We have to use the same data. The site is built as such that these pages are dupliate content, which is what I know and are worried about. We didn't design it, we don't maintain the web design aspect of the site. Only the CMS. All other business needs to be paid for to edit, which we don't want to do as they built this so bad, charge through the roof and basically we want a new site rather spend doing this up on things that should have been done when it was built.

2. The NOINDX is an option, but by not indexing these pages would we be effectively taking our Armani Jeans page for Jeans out of Google? If we did this, would it be wise because we would have our Armani products ranking for us for the specific item pages rather than the shirts, footwear etc... pages?

Thanks for your reply. They are not a band but a designer clothing label.

The price reflect the quality of the fabric, made from fine japanese fabric. Some of the descriptions say this but I should really get it in all of them.

The problem I see is were getting hundereds of items online, going into great detail on each item description is a task upon its self.

Maybe the t-shirt image blurb would be useful as it will tell the customer exactly what it stands for.

Within that description, how many times would be recommend to get the words "passarella death squad t-shirt" in there? Currently aiming for about twice, is this ok?

I think it would have some effect. How big that is I don't know.

I am sure a 301 to any page doesn't carry 100% of its worth to the new page. So I think that may be the case with each page.

However, if your getting clicks to your new site from 4 domains and all those visitors in the one place. Then maybe it would have a positive effect on the site.

Having read the SEOMOZ guide and already worried about this previously, I have decided to look further into this.

Our site is 4-5 years old, poorly built by a rouge firm so we have to stick with what we have for now.

Were I think we might be getting punished is duplicate content across various pages.

1. We have a Brands page, link at top of page. Here we are meant to enter each brand we stock and a little write up on that brands. What we then put in these write ups is used on each brands item page when we click a brand name on the left nav bar. Or when we click a Product Type (eg. Footwear) then click on a brand filter on the left. So this in theory is duplicate content. The SEO title and Meta Description for each brand is then used on the Brands Page and also on each page with the Brands Product on.

2. As we have entered this brand info, you will notice that the page www.designerboutique-online.com/all-clothing/armani-jeans/ has the same brand description in the scroll box at the top as the page www.designerboutique-online.com/shirts/armani-jeans/ and all the other product type pages. The same SEO title and same Meta descriptions. Only the products change from each one.

This then applies to each brand we have (at least 15) across about 8 pages. All with different URLs but the same text. Not sure how a 301 or rel: canonical would work for this, as each URL needs to point at specific pages (eg. shirts, shorts etc...). Some brands such as Creative Recreation and Cruyff only sell footwear, so technically I think??? We could 301 to the Footwear/ URL rather than having both all-clothing and footwear file paths?

This surely must be down to the bad design?

Could we be losing valulable rank and juice because of this issue? And how would I go about fixing it? I want a new site, but funds are tight. But if this issue is so big that only a new site would fix it, then maybe the money would need to come forward.

What do people make of this?

I thought it would if anything prefer its own blogging programme BlogSpot?

It all depends on the user. Me personally I wouldn't pay for any. 1) due to tight budget and 2) just because they have a high DA doesn't mean they are quality blogs.

Take my blog, it probably has a DA of 90 due to it being blogspot, buts its only a month old and has 3 posts on it. So the page authority is probably really low.

If you want to give me $600 for a blog artile, I will take your cash. But your not going to get much of a return I would imagine.

Concentrate on free blog posts. Maybe spend that money on hiring someone to type a shed load of blog articles for you, then try get them out there for free.

Just my 2 pence worth.

If you are going on DA alone, then I think your'll waste your money. Try looking at PA as well, linking domains, number of external links etc... Some blogs have thousands of links on page, will that really offer you any quality? Maybe if it was free, but paying for it would be a waste of money.

A more experience SEO'er may give you a better answer than this.

How new is the domain?

If its less than a month old, then you need to allow more time before the crawl will show any results in amy opinion.

5 months down the line for me and some of my linking domains are only just coming through.

Maybe someone with a bit more knowledge could offer some alternate views?
