You shouldn't experience any problems with a hyphen in the domain name. Exact Match domains seem to rank better, but most likely not directly associated with the exact match but the domain history and content. Even with a hyphen you get a close match. I have seen hyphen domains rank just fine.

The only concern I would have is consistency within the domain name. You may throw of users by adding a hyphen to an unhyphenated domain. Personally I would opt against using the hyphen. People have learned to read through domain names at this point.

If you do go with the hyphen make sure you redirect the unhyphenated version to the hyphenated version.

I don't know on exact ratios, but I think it is effective to vary your anchor text. I believe that search engines expect handwritten content to have variation.

We transferred from Bulwarkpest.com to Bulwarkpestcontrol.com to get the keyword match. But we were not really risking much as there was very little SEO effort put into bulwarkpest.com. Worked well for us, but you will most likely see a drop while the search engines test your new site to see if the new site is relevant. If you have an off season then you may want to test this then. If the redirect doesn't benefit you then you should be able to regain positions by simply going back to the original domain.

However, you may want to look more into 'brand building" Orkin ranks just fine for pest control without it being in their domain name.

Ryan's advice is solid. The only reason I believe that double listings would legitimately appear is because your site has overlapping categories. Like "widgets" and "blue widgets". Your secondary category my pull enough rank to graduate to the first page. In your case, your home page and store front could overlap. Like "Widgets" and "Buy Widgets". If your content is unique enough then you should be fine.

There will be no SEO fall out due to hyphen.

I don't like: football-sport.mysite.com

No hyphen just seems to be more common. Users may get confused only upon remembering the subdomain. "uh... I think there is a silent hyphen in that URL...??? Or was it no hyphen?"

So if you use football-sport.mysite.com then redirect footballsport.mysite.com to football-sport.mysite.com.

Letting like minded link friendly people know that you have a site you'd like links for. Honestly, be direct and ask. I am pretty sure I could find you a link if I knew what site you wanted it to and as long as it's not a bad neighborhood.

Any website that gives you a profile to fill out can be used to create a citation. Simply apply your Name, address, phone number to your profile and you have a citation.

I have also heard 3 clicks from a page with link juice. So if you have deep links to a page it can help carry pages deeper in. Do you agree?

Search engines understand footer links and therefore the total value of a footer link is greatly diminished. Per a Bing rep, if a footer link exists and is relevant then the value is 1 link from that site, not 10,000. So I don't believe you will get as big of a bump as you might believe.

However, I do believe that cross linking your domains is not a bad practice. We host our blog on a separate site and link back and forth. It only seems to help us and not hurt us.

But you do run a risk of looking manipulative and therefore being penalized. I would suggest testing one link in the footer. See if it gives you a bump or gets penalized. If you get a bump, keep it. If you get dinged. Get rid of it.

Do they have a sells team? Someone who talks to the customers? I would interview that individual to find out who they esteem to be the perfect customer. Ask them about the verbiage the clients use and the questions they have. If they have had a website long enough then you can dig through their site's traffic and analytics to find keywords that produce quality visitors. Longer visits, volume, etc. The bonus to this is that if they are already generating some traffic for those keywords then you should be able to boost those rankings.

But you could use multiple pages to keep it a consistent theme on the website. If you want to rank for Shoes, then you create one page for shoes. Then create other pages more specific to say running shoes, or dress shoes, but link them back to your shoes page.

All linking back to the Shoes.com homepage, optimized for Shoes.

Get listed in the local UK directories. i.e.- Yelp.co.uk

Time. You will need to have time under your belt in order for google to really establish a winner. If the other sites beat you to the punch then you will have to prove to Google that you deserve to be above them. I've seen sites that simply gained "authority" first and no amount of SEO would debunk them.

I agree with Egol. Conversion rate would be a deciding factor.

Current position and ease of improving that position would also be a factor. Cost of maintaining a position should also be considered.

If all things were equal and you are looking at pure traffic numbers...

Keyword A - 3,000 at 19% = 570

Keyword B - 20,000 at 7% = 1400

Go for Keyword B.

I've never moved a large site, but our little pest control site didn't have any negative effects when we moved it. Same thing, we needed a little more growth flexibility. I think the search engines understand that sites need to move or add IPs.

The TLD alone does not determine the value of the link. There are some pretty spammy .edu links out there. For the most part .EDUs gain google's trust because of the quality content and number of inbound links to them as a reference. Avoid spammy .edu pages. Get links from good forums on .edu's, or discount pages where it makes sense.

I don't see what added social value the general populous will get from google plus. I am sure it will have some really cool bells and whistle's but the effort it takes to move a social party to a new location is HUGE! The added value must be significant, and you have to have reason to leave the first party.

I don't want to be just another nay-sayer... but I just don't think they are going to get mass buy-in. Without the mass numbers the statistical sampling will be flawed. So the social and SEO impact will be skewed. The beef everyone has with SEO is that website owners are making back door deals to get links. The problem with Google +1 is that the crowd that is most concerned about it is the SEO crowd and those that want to spread their influence through the search engine. Funny how they say that they don't want people manipulating the searches and then roll out a program which seems to only ask for manipulation. "Plus 1 this so that you can influence what your friends see in the search."

I understand that Google+ is suppose to be different than Google +1, but what Google is searching for seems to be the same, social signals to better rank websites.
