Searchmetrics or Semrush or something else?
Brilliant question. Its a shame we only got two replies. We are at the same situation trying to decide which tool to go with. We did a month with Searchmetrics (fully paid - no trial version or anything). When you purchase the basic account ($69) it is really basic which many features removed. The next level up is for $2000! (yes you read it right), so unless you are a large company its out of the question. If that's not enough, the Searchmetrics support sucks! and there is hardly any supporting videos and tutorials on the other hand, they have just lunched a "Mobile" position tracker which shows you Mobile SERP results alongside the Desktop results, this is something (and please correct me if i'm wrong) i haven't seen anywhere yet. That said, we were able to get some proper data about competitors and their viability and rankings. SEMRUSH on the other hand seems to be much more engaging with their customers (paying customers and the community). Their pricing start at $69.95, $149.95 and $549.95 and from data point view i cant really see any downside with the exception of the nice mobile SERP feature that Searchmetrics have. I would love to see what other experienced companies has to say about those two competitors. Dan.

Be brutily honest - What do you think of this old content?
I think you are right here... and yes, I think a change of strategy is required in light of the way Google is heading with this latest update and how other similar sites are suffering. I am starting to formulate a plan, and your response kind of reinforced it.

Keyword density or No. of Time keyword used
Hi Jonathan, I totally recognize your situation. Although I don’t really check the keyword amounts of the competition I do write articles and find myself using the keyword a LOT. This while I don’t really think about “using” it while I write the articles. I these cases I CRL + F and search for the keyword and try to change a few sentences. I normally don’t put more than 5 minutes of work in it and I only change stuff if it’s still understandable for the reader. Unfortunate I don’t have case studies in were this method actually pays off, so would love to see some more about this topic as well!

Canonical or No-index
But it's the date that makes them different! As in if I was specifically looking for info on 2013 I wouldn't WANT the 2014 page to be served and vice versa. I would leave them both indexed - assuming the data is entirely different in each.

Reviewing Category & Tag policy - Update
Looks good Jonathan! You can make the sidebar more specific with the category if you want to really target your audience Add in some breadcrumbs/schema, shorten your meta description a bit as the result in google is cut off for me. Besides those, it looks great!

Stop Words and keyword optimization
"how to create stuff something" (some people would pick this because they think that the absence of "in" makes for better keyword optimization) "how to create stuff in something" (I pick this because in addition to sounding better to the user it might be clicked more, and being clicked more, in my opinion, is more valuable today than keyword optimization. Why? Because google is pretty good at getting the keywords from your article into the title tag but getting people to do what you want them to do takes much more finesse. )

Q&A Question showing as answered when it is not
Thanks. But from what I read elsewhere, and what I am seeing I think it is unrelated to rogerbot being caught in the firewall and more likely a https SSL certificate issue.
