Also, Seomoz recommends limiting the links on any page to less than 100. The reason they state is "When search engine spiders crawl the Internet they are limited by technology resources and are only able to crawl a certain number of links per webpage...though if your pages have a high page authority, search engines will usually follow more links."

With this in mind I would consider building links to deeper pages on your site to help build authority and help google find some of these pages that aren't indexed.

Good answers here. I would also like to suggest spreading your directory submissions out over a period of time. This way you don't have a bunch of links pointing to your site - it will look unnatural.

Submissions to human edited, niche- or geographically-related directories is best practice.

I would conclude that something else is causing the drop in rankings.  How significant was the drop?

Both sites are still being indexed and I would assume that if co.uk site dropped from duplication that adding the rel canonical would adjust the problem. However, rel canonical is just a suggestion to google on which site to display.

Using the hreflang tag is best practice for your situation.

I did a branded search in google.ie and google.co.uk and each respective site appeared. I don't think your co.uk website dropped because of duplicate content. I would suggest focusing on other factors to bring the site back up.

Do you know the specific date when your ranking dropped? Any change in your on- or off-page optimization?

Yes, I looked at a few pages of both sites and saw the content to be similar with some slight variations. I think with the domains on two different TLDs that Google won't penalize you for duplication.

Google can determine which site to display in the SERPs depending on the location of the user.

I wouldn't worry about only two sites on two different TLDs with similar content, just keep currency and phone number relevant to area and you should be OK. I saw a video by Matt Cutts a while back about this - it should help confirm.

This is generally not a problem as long as the content is for different users in different countries. This method does not hurt nor boost your SEO directly but is a great feature for the actual users on your site. This is a great way to promote your posts on your site and inform your audience of your social media accounts. It also gives them a taste of what you are doing on social media.

So while it will not directly affect your rankings, it can bring you more "likes" and "followers" that will see your posts on social media - driving more return traffic to your site and more chances to obtain links and shares.

I agree with making the content on this page read a little more natural and maybe splitting it up with some h2s.

To rank for local search terms, I would try to obtain links from "local" websites. Example: Attorney Associations in San Diego, San Diego Chamber of Commerce, and some authority local news sites that accept guest posts.

You can write posts that pertain to your industry and include a relevant linkback to your page. Here are some local new site links:

Have you considered allowing guest posts from professionals within the industry. Make some contacts with some top authorities in prescription drugs to do some guest posts and offer them some sort of incentive (doesn't have to be a link back).

Also, try to set up an interview with a doctor, pharmacist to talk about current issues or events within your industry and post the interview to the site. Or even try your idea of going on a tangent of saving money on prescription drugs and interviewing a financial consultant but have your questions pertain industry related topics.

There are many things you can do to get your site ranking and rolling!

Search branded and non-branded terms for the site on Google to see how the site performs. If they aren't deindexed or performing poorly for their targeted keywords it probably wouldn't hurt to obtain a link from them.

However, it would probably be better to put your guest post efforts elsewhere.

If the image links or any links are from the Display Network, Google can identify this and will not pass any link juice to the site.

Essentially, if those links counted then it would be like buying links to rank higher on SERPs. I would also thoroughly search the page to make sure that your competitor's image link isn't also in the body of page.

Do you know the exact date you traffic went down. You could have been hit by Panda. There were two Panda updates before and after Penguin in April.

Host your videos on a third party host (Wistia, Vimeo Pro) and embed on your site with a crawlable player - most prefer html5 player to get your videos on the SERPs and refer back to your site.

Do not publish videos on Youtube or Vimeo if you want the video to go back to your site - it will be self-cannibalization. Also once the videos are on your site, create a video XML sitemap and submit through GWT.

As far as having a link in the embed code of your videos, I believe Wistia's Embed Builder will help you create an iframe that can do just that.

Using the keyword difficulty tool, the search for " The Unibody iPhone" is highly competitive. The SERPs have the sites like Fortune, Gizmodo, cnet that link to your site in the top spots. Also, I noticed the link from Fortune is a nofollow.

I did notice that you cannot view the website in Internet Explorer and goes to a page with links to other browser downloads. This could be contributing to poor rankings.

Having your page linked by these authority news sites but not performing well in the search results isn't necessarily a bad thing. You are probably receiving a ton of referral traffic from these news and blog sites. Once these news sites are lowered after the buzz, your site should do well and continue to bring traffic.

OSE will show both the www and non-www version of pages. These URLs may go to the same page but the bot considers these two different pages.

To report broken links, you will usually want to report this to a webmaster. So if you are unable to find their email address you can always try standard email address formats.

For example, if you find a broken link on brokelink.com, try emailing to webmaster@brokelink.com or postmaster@brokelink.com. You can even try to contact someone for general inquires so they can forward your email to the right person or give you the correct email address. To do this (using the example above), I would try info@brokelink.com or admin@brokelink.com

I think Rankerizer - http://www.rankerizer.com/ - does a pretty good job of tracking your ranking for multiple keywords. And you can easily export results into a CSV file.

Create custom landing pages that are relevant to your ad copy and set a budget. Make sure to do plenty of keyword research and utilize positive and negative keywords on each campaign so your ad is not showing up for irrelevant searches.

I agree with Kevin on measuring everything and using a unique phone number to track your leads.

K thanks for clarifying. I think I have a better understanding now of what's going on.

I'm assuming you are finding the links that are pointing to your site through Webmaster Tools. It can take weeks after google has recrawled the page for your updated link profile to be reflected in GWT.

But if you are going to theses websites with 404 pages and your link is no longer there then you should have nothing to worry about. I would suggest thoroughly reviewing the links on all the pages that are said to be linking to you and and view the source code for no display tags with links to your site.

Unless you own or have permission from the website with the 404 pages, the Removal Tool won't allow you to remove the page from their index.

Have you checked on any link explorers to see if they are displaying the same links? Maybe it will provide you with a more refreshed link profile.

As long as google can crawl the text the same weight will be applied as if it was out of accordions. But you should make sure that google can in fact crawl the text by using Fetch as Google on your Webmaster Tools account.
