Title pretty much explains it all. If lots of people plus one (the new verb of 2011?) a site, is that site deemed 'popular' and therefore will appear higher up the SERPS generally? Or does it only affect those with whom you are linked via Twitter/Facebook/Google+?
Or is it too early to tell yet?
Not only this, but it helps increase conversion too. Customers that know there's a physical location they can go to if necessary means they are more likely to buy from you, as they will have more confidence in the legitimacy of your company.
Interesting that on an SEO site, there is one guy recommended above all others. He must be one hot cookie! And in this case he will be booked not for 3 months but til the edge of time...
We have been having some modest success with Google Shopping results in the UK. However we are yet to understand exactly what makes one brand more likely to rank over another. We need to understand which factors are at play and just how best keywords can be optomised?
Thanks Egol and Emily. You're correct about our lack of descriptive content. Now that really is a job, for 14k products.....;(
Thanks
Is your recommended system as well supported as Magento? Why did you choose over Magento?

Hi
We currently run our eyewear store on osCommerce. However, for various reasons we are considering a redevelopment onto another platform, the most obvious choice being Magento. What might the advantage and improvement in SEO with such a change and is the pain worth the gain???
Following advice here on Seomoz we have managed to boost rankings of several keywords onto page 1. However, this welcome visibilty has revealed some weak meta descriptions. We also run an adwords campaign and are familiar with best practice in writing adwords copy which can be monitored via ctr. However other than testing which can be a little lengthy and given that we have 1000s of pages (www.pretavoir.co.uk) as a ecommerce store, what is best practice in writing meta descriptions to increase organic ctr?
Thanks
I would agree in that you have decent PA and DA with that site and a great springboard.
Right away, your title tags should be rewritten
eg NLP World NLP Information NLP Education
will be just as effective for SEO purposes if changed to
NLP World | Information and Education.
However it will read better to humans and increase ctr on organic results.
Meta Description is a little spammy and again should be rewritten to increase organic ctr
Ensure correct h1, h2 tags
Also there is a list of meta keywords and as google pretty much ignores these for ranking purposes all you are doing is giving your competitors an insight to your strategies therefore remove/prune this list.
You will also be aware that the design of this site is a little dated and a refresh would decrease bounce rate.
I hope you manage to achieve results with this site and I am sure you will reap the rewards of this aged domain.
I assume that you/your client are using google analytics? Have there been any changes in urls etc recently as this can affect how GA calculates your traffic. If your client any adwords campaigns, have they made any changes?
Otherwise, have their been any external changes eg
1. seasonal or other product/service demand changes which affect traffic to your clients site?
2. Changes in competitor SEO activity eg improved meta descriptions increasing their ctr
3. Changes in competitor adwords either spend or ad copy?
There will be an explanation though it may take some detective work..
I would suggest that you try and be a little more focussed. Research sites that you might like to obtain a link from and if they have a good Domain Authority then its worth a few hours working on a strategy. Perhaps you have information they might be interested in? If they dont have their own SEO then perhaps running their site through site crawler and giving them a free mini site audit, reporting any broken links, etc. Achieve goodwill and remember the old adage 'Givers Get'
On every occasion that we receive a thank you email, we explain how valuable to our business an online review is, and give a link to enable customer to do so. This strategy has worked very well so far..
I stumbled across this blog post:
http://garyreid.com/youtube-removes-nofollow/
and also this one : http://www.kevin-barnes.com/youtube-secret-authority-loophole/
which talks about no-follow links from your Youtube Channel Page. We've setup a Youtube channel, and have begun updating it regularly, however the link appears to be a redirect-type link -presumably this means no link juice is passed?
The code of the link on our Youtube channel:
The second blog mentions building PA on your Youtube channel by commenting on other videos which then links back to your channel page - if that juice can't go to your site, then I assume the technique is of limited use? Apart from boosting your Youtube Channel's rankings of course, which I guess can't hurt.
We have gone through this experience and lived to tell the tale;
1. Choose a domain name with keyword included. Your client is unlikely to become the next google or amazon, therefore domain name is important for two reasons; user understanding and SEO friendliness. A perfect example is overstock.com. So, if your client is selling riding jackets then get a url such as ridingjackets.com or ridingjacketsshop.com or a hyphenated version at least. This will make your SEO work easier and also increase ctr on organic results.
2. Choose an SEO friendly ecommerce platform. We chose osCommerce which although it has some SEO modules was a mistake and for more reasons than just SEO. Magento is probably the best choice.
3. Follow good onsite practice, relevant title tags, urls, meta descriptions (ex SEO guru Danny Dover's SEO Secrets explains most of this). Avoid Duplicate content and write as much original material as you can. Seomoz crawl diagnostics is perfect to keep you right on these issues. Write good meta descriptions. Perhaps avoid meta keywords
4. Submit to Directories
5. Write Content, Build Relationships, Sell Product, Write Content, Build Relationships, Sell Product, Write Content, Build Relationships, Sell Product, Write Content, Build Relationships, Sell Product, Write Content, Build Relationships, Sell Product, Write Content, Build Relationships, Sell Product, Write Content, Build Relationships, Sell Product, Write Content, Build Relationships, Sell Product..............................
If you have acquired a link on a home or other page; just how can you value the contribution of that link. If a home page has a DA=50 and 100 obls (outbound links) should the DA be discounted significantly and is there an equation which can be applied to help quantify eg 50/100 *10 therefore link from this page is same value as link from DA=5 with only one link? Just how diluted does juice become if number of obls is high?
That plugin is expensive, but it is highly useful if you're an X-Cart user. It allows completely custom URLs to be made - as in www.yoursite.com/your-product or www.yoursite.com/category/your-product, you can have literally anything after the '/'. It also auto-generates & submits XML sitemaps. It comes highly recommended on the X-Cart forums.
