Unfortunately, the other developer controls all. We develop a set of sites that are essentially micro sites that advertise particular facets of our clients professional practice. With our sites when we have the main site and the micro sites, we make the 301 change in the .htaccess and then set the preference with Google per webmaster tools. We look first to see where the page authority lies and redirect from weak to strong if just for www/non www. With a new TLD, obviously, it is from old to new.

I want a sure way to know this ...person....did what they are telling their client they did. It does not appear so. With ours when we do a site:OurSite we get what we assumed on every page of Google search. With this one it is four pages with the 13 www and 20 non www. Some www urls resolve to the non and some do not. When I look in OSE, I see where there is mention of a redirect from www to non www, and the non www all with PA of 1, DA of 15. With www, PA is 25 for home page.

Is my assumption that if a 301 was done in .htaccess, there should be no www showing in Google Site:?

OK, so the main thing he did was around taking content and attaching it to every major city with the only change being the next city in the keyword phrase. 
I would suggest following what you have seen here, optimize locally based on the city he is in to include google places, bing business portal and yahoo local. Then, if you really believe there is a market in those other cities, do microsites that link back to the city you are in.

Or, if he has affiliations with other practitioners in those cities utilize them to assist in the outer area marketing. Either with links or with actually having a page or two about him on their sites. Always try to maintain as much of the original Domain Auth. as is possible.

OK, you have two Gurus (yes they are, I read their stuff) and another journeyman answering the technical stuff. But, I have to ask (I am an RN who worked with a talented urologist who did vasectomy reversals for those who typically had gotten a vas, divorced, remarried, and you can figure out the rest). There were no images when I went to the link and I am assuming from what you wrote these are not for a urology practice? If they are for a urology practice, there really are men - with wives - who want to reverse a vasectomy. This surgery is generally performed by a highly skilled urologist who spends a lot of days sewing really small vessels as practice.

If this is truly for a urologist who does this, i would suggest taking a step back as to what is or is not offensive. Then take a look at keyword queries around this and around vasectomy. If you can utilize the ranking you have, you should do so by all means. Then, build a site that will attract those who want this surgery.

Admittedly, this is not one I have dealt with, but in reading it I tried to intuit a reply. What would happen if you took each affected url and resubmitted it for indexing with Yahoo, Google, and Bing?

I am sure someone who has dealt with it will have a ready answer but it certainly begged a question for me. Assuming the urls that linked are dead, if you reindex, wouldn't those be gone? Now, this does not affect OSE, I understand but would think that OSE is the least of your issues with something like that wherein an advertiser is pointing it out to you.

Ok, I know it has been asked, answered, and re-asked but I am going to ask for a specific reason. As you know, anyone who is a graphic designer or web developer is also an expert in SEO....Right??? 
I am dealing with a client who is clinging to a developer but wants us to do the SEO on a myriad of sites. All connect to his main site via links, etc. The main site was just redeveloped by a developer who claims extensive SEO knowledge. The client who referred me to them is getting over twenty times the organic clients they are and is in a JV with the new client. Soooo, I want to show them once and for all they are wrong on the www. versus non-www.

When I do a Site:NewClient.com in Google I get a total of 13 www.newclient.com url's and 20 newclient.com url's without the www. Oddly, none are dupes of the other. So, where the www.NewClient/toy-boat/ is there, the other might be non www.  NewClient/toy-boat/sailing-green/

Even the contact page is in the www.NewClient/contact versus the non www of NewClient/Contact-us/

But, both pages seem to resolve to the non www. (A note here is that I originally instructed the designer to do non www to www. because the page authority was on the www.NewClient and he did opposite.

With pages that are actually PDF files, if you try to use the www.NewClient/CoolGuy.pdf it comes up 404.

When I check our sites, using Site:We-Build-Better.com ours return all www.We-Build-better/ url's.

So, any other advice on how to insure these correct or incorrect? Oddly, we have discovered that sometimes in OSE, even with a correct canonical redirect it shows one without authority and the other with....we have contacted support.

I think this is a good question Greg and it is likely asked by some of us every day. Given that the keyword specific domain seems to be losing some of its value in SEO, I would say its likely now or never. http://www.seomoz.org/article/search-ranking-factors

From this the best and brightest seem to think the value of exact match domains will diminish and it would stand to reason that it would. But probably not to zero in the next year or two in my opinion.

So, if your site is a large site with many Keywords, my suggestion would be to set up micro sites utilizing the exact match domains and link to your main site (remember that you need a different IP or C Block). Or link from the larger site to the exact match and build its value quicker while potentially being able to gain more ranking real estate.

The other thought for a more narrow site would be to do a 301 redirect to the new domain from the old. We do this often with professional practice clients and over about 90 days we do see their domain authority rise. (Remember that the 301 is url t url and has to be placed in the .htaccess file to be effective).

We did this recently with an attorney where we utilized an exact match phrase around bankruptcy and his location with hyphens and redirected his www.thebillyboblawfirm.com to that. I was surprised that we were able to transfer his original DA and PA so easily and now we are growing both. Obviously, it is harder to tell how much the exact match has to do with that versus the fact that we are engaged and whomever he used previously was not.

My opinion is that it does have significant impact as we are now ranking on terms where we were no before. While I am unwilling to share the site particulars en masse, if you contact me via private mail, I will share the data with a simple promise of confidentiality.

Probably a bad example with the oil, but with free xyz game as that page grows in authority it effects the domain authority of the site. As the domain authority goes up, the easier it is for the page authority to increases. So, each optimized page ultimately effects every page.

As with any landing pages, you should always be testing. So, test the localized pages. Create a landing page that is .com.au and test it against a .com (both identical in every other way) and see how each converts. 
With your snippet showing .com.au versus .com, you could likely test the does the .au improve your chances with Google.com.au

All that Ryan is saying here is spot on. What might help you from a wider perspective is to change how you are thinking about your site. You state: "I want my website to rank great with a particular keyword." you then state you want the start page (home page) to appear on top Google results.

Sites do not rank in Google, Pages do. What Ryan is trying to communicate is that you need to have a focus for each page and a keyword/keyword phrase for each. So, Free Games Online is your homepage keyword phrase and you optimize that page for that phrase. Maybe, page two is a particular game "Farmeram." your keyword phrase might be Farmerama - Free Online. So, while the site title is Free Games Online, the page will be Farmerama  Free Online or Farmerama Game Free Online, Free Farmerama Game Online. etc. You then incorporate this into the other page elements and move to page three. By utilizing good keyword research (what keywords are gamers using to search for games with) you are able to choose phrases with higher numbers of searches.

When you get every page fully optimized, your site will then be optimized. (Oh, yeah, then go to the English version

If you use the search tool on SEOmoz site, and put in Page Authority you will get a good answer to this. That said, it is SEOmoz's calculation of how well a page will rank based on the pages global link authority. Along with that, the higher the domain authority of the site, the greater chance that page authority will be higher.

So it is predictive of where a page might rank in relation to others of similar value.

In Joomla you have you can set up page titles in several places. Global configuration includes use Site Title in page title, Most templates (I just looked at one in JSN Epic) have an SEO option - Enable website title, and you have the option for each page to set metadata options (meta description is here and there is a sitewide meta description).

So, most likely what is happening is you have your settings where you are picking up the site title on every page and then you have put a title on every page (this is the one where alias is under Title).

I would suggest going to Global Configuration and to the right side where it says include site name in page title, mark that as NO. Save and close then look at site (after refreshing). Run SEOmoz page elements before and after and see if there is a change. _If not, you can go back and re check to yes include site title in page titles. (This way you are only changing one thing at a time which is important to track the error and know you are correct). _

If you are still having the problem with meta description, go to Global Config and cut the site meta description out and paste it somewhere else (I am pretty sure you have to be using Explorer for cut and paste in Joomla) or copy it to somewhere so that you do not have to rewrite. Once there is no site meta description, save and close again. Refresh again and run page content from SEOmoz toolbar on a couple of pages. If each page has been given a separate meta desc. then you should be seeing that as opposed to site meta. (Typically the site meta is for the feature page which for our uses is always the home page).

I have to agree with Ryan. When we are doing campaigns it is not unusual for us to buy all the domain extensions to given phrases. An example would be if we were doing a medical device ad for PI attorneys, we might by BadDevice.org, .com, .net, .info, etc. We will only choose one or two so we do not want to have a bunch with two years we have wasted money on. We let the others expire.

We have had no problem growing PA and DA along with ranking on the engines with one year domains.I do not see where those we bought for two years improve ranking any faster, either.

If you look at sites like those whose titles end in "pages," it is common for them to no follow their links. The reasoning (this is my opinion) is that they do not want the advertiser to grow and leave them so they try to prevent any juice from going to them. To, in essence, endeavor to keep them captive.

When we take on a client who uses an advertising medium that uses no follows in their links to their clients, we generally also find they are the type who do "ppc" but have "no way to show you what they paid for a given keyword", etc.  We suggest the clients do not continue unless the advertising medium is bringing them a really good ROI that is demonstrable.

I doubt the site you advertise on will change its policy to assist you based on my experience with this type. It is not a question of their fear of losing juice, but a fear that they will be increasing their clients value and therefore more likely to lose the client. However, if you want to try the place to put the pressure is on your individual rep. Tell them you are unhappy and you think they owe you the link in an uncorrupted way. Reps want to keep their commissions and not lose clients.

I don't know that it will quicken the pace, but it should improve either way since you only have one root domain.

I think if you did the changes to each url and were sure that a url of www.meresverige.dk/rejser/malmoe was redirected to www...../malmo and www.meres..../malmoe/xyz went to www.meres...../malmo/xyz that you should not have long until you get the juice from the original. When I looked OSE, www.meresverige.dk/rejser/malmoe shows the redirect to /malmo. Interestingly, the non www of meresverige.dk/rejser/malmoe does not show the redirect and the non www of meresverige.dk/rejser/malmo doesn't either.

Could it be that you have not taken care of the canonical redirect and that is why you are not getting the juice? Have you done a 301 of non www to the www version via your .htaccess file? Have you also selected your preferred domain in Google?  If you haven't, do that and be sure that you choose the www. as your preferred (canonical) url since it already has the juice with it.

If you have done the urls each as their own 301 and you have set the 301's in the .htaccess file along with the "canonical redirect" you should be seeing results soon.

Be aware if you are using a CMS that if they state you can 301 through some plugin that you are better off doing it the old fashion way.

When you say, "this page and the pages below it in the structure now get...," did you do a redirect for each of the urls that are below this? 
If you redirected this url only and then did not do the same to the pages below it, that is likely your problem. With a 301 you need to do every url that is involved individually.

We did a site a while back and did not do this and it simply was not ranking. After changing and doing each url where applicable, we were back within about 10 days.

As to the page rank of one to the other, the original /malmo had a PA of 25 with only one linking root domain (per OSE). I would think if you could add a few links from other root domains you would assist your effort quite well. But, the url to url is most important.

As to the English translation to French, Japanese, Spanish, etc. this does not count as duplicate content in the eyes of google. From Google webmaster blog:

What isn't duplicate content?
Though we do offer a handy translation utility, our algorithms won't view the same article written in English and Spanish as duplicate content. Similarly, you shouldn't worry about occasional snippets (quotes and otherwise) being flagged as duplicate content.

So, in my opinion you are going the right direction. The question about having a different TLD for each English speaking country assuming the content is different, I would think that it would depend on the benefit you derive from localization beyond having Places locations should you include bricks and mortar sites in your business model. If the cost in time and money is such that it is very small, then it probably helps to localize the TLD. (If not from an SEO perspective, potentially from a customer acquisition perspective.) My opinion is that if I have a site that is .AU and another that is .com and appears to be U.S., I am more likely to buy from the one where I live. So, for me, the US site is preferable as a consumer.

Without weighing the costs involved, I do not think you can make a determination of value for the other country specific TLD's.

I cannot figure out why open site explorer doesn't see that when you go to http://preferredroofingkc.net/ it redirects to http://www.preferredroofingkc.net/

This is a wordpress installation that uses a cannonical url http://www.preferredroofingkc.net/

The HTACCESS file also has a 301 redirect as follows:

But, open site explorer still shows these sites separately without alerting that there is a 301 redirect.
