Ah, this makes so much more sense now! I hadn't read this announcement and have been wondering why Firefox Mozbar was acting all screwy the past few weeks. Finally decided to just try re-installing it this morning, but after I uninstalled I couldn't find it in Firefox's Extensions library!

Looking forward to being able to use it in Firefox again. Unfortunate though that it'll be the current Chrome flavour one. Always seemed to work a lot faster in Firefox than in Chrome, so I tried to push all my Mozbar usage to my "Firefox monitor" rather than my Chrome one when working.

Miriam Ellis recently wrote a blog post about this on Moz, which I would definitely recommend checking out:

Within it, she provides quite an awesome template or "Client Discovery Questionnaire" of questions that she recommends sending to new clients to get a better understanding of the client's history including other consultants that they have worked or are working with. This is available to download as a Google Doc too! It's a great resource.

If you've tried all the on-site optimisation strategies, the only solution I can think of would be to focus on off-site optimisation of the category pages you would rather have ranking for the search terms, in order to increase their page authority in relation to those keywords. It's a bit of an old-school solution when link building is so frowned upon these days, but it works. Do you have any inbound links to the category page with anchor text containing the search term you want to rank for?

How odd. I've been visiting http://analytics.moz.com/manage-campaigns all morning and haven't experienced a 404.

Would love to see a recent study comparing Google's and Bing's ranking factors, or what industry experts suspect them to be in addition to their estimated "weight".

Is this here to stay, do you think...? I'm so wary of Google's changes, I don't think I'll be lengthening my titles to make better use of the width until the dust settles a bit.

I did notice the wider SERPs in my logged in browser this morning. There's been so many layout updates recently, as well as other odd fluctuations, who knows what Google's up to...

I just wondered whether there's any significant difference in CTR for results with longer descriptions. And if it's an improvement, can we optimise our on-page content for it, the same way that we can optimise to increase our likelihood of appearing as a featured snippet, to nudge Google into considering showing the elongated description for our result.

Thanks, Andy. This was an enlightening read and I'm grateful for you sharing it, but I don't feel as if it really answered my question. For some search queries, I'm even seeing half of the 1st page results displayed with long descriptions. Surely, this has got to be more than before? But what's so special about _those _results that causes Google to opt for the longer snippet?

You know the ones I mean... Google have been infrequently displaying some meta descriptions as 3-4 lines long for some time now. But recently, I've been noticing them more. Not sure whether it's just a coincidence that I've been seeing more for my searches, or whether Google are displaying more in this format.

Does anybody know what causes Google to prefer the longer meta description or extended meta description for some results?

He seems to have used a single phone number throughout his previous clinics, though he works from a main one (which is the one he wants to be locally optimised for), he frequently works from other clinics too - with the same landline contact number.

Not sure about dedicated set of rooms or forward-facing front desk - I've put this forward to him. As well as his regular working hours, if any. I've actually tried to follow your advice from your "new clients" blog post, Miriam, but it seems as if the difficulty is getting all the questions answered in one go haha. Oddly, I seem to get a quicker response when it's one question at a time.

I noticed this too very recently! I've added the location via that method, as well as through Google Maps Editor through a different account.

This is great advice, and I will definitely bear it in mind for similar situations in future. Unfortunately, for this particular business there are no dedicated "suites" as such. It seems like it's a clinic version of hot desking, with multiple doctors each running their own private business occupying the available clinic rooms within the building.

I appreciate it's quite a specific SEO dilemma, but I'm sure it must affect other industries. Especially now with the growing start-up generation. Even recently I visited an "enterprise hub" where businesses were able to use the address as their listed address whilst renting "hot desks" or "hot suites" by the day, changing desk or suite on a daily basis to whichever in the building is available. I wonder what _their _local SEO strategy looks like....

This seems to be quite common (especially now with "hotdesking" becoming increasingly popular), but I've never had to do local SEO for a business like this before so was just wondering on best practice for a business who shares the same brick-and-mortar location with multiple other businesses.

For Google My Business verification, it does seem you just have to get there first. With Google unverifying the first account tied to that address if you attempt to verify another - I don't want to do this, due to the relationship between my client and the verified business in question.

Any suggestions?

Sending the searcher to another ad-ridden SERP doesn't surprise me. Google is the ultimate ad-pushing scraper site.

The Related Topics featured snippet seems to be quite similar to the People Also Ask feature that usually appears below the featured snippet separately.

I've seen no mention of them on getSTAT's Featured Snippet whitepaper either, and that was quite thorough SERP research. How new are Related Topics? Or am I being silly, and they've been around for a while?

In addition to noindexing the pages using the meta tag, if you have WMT / Search Console set up, you can request Google remove those URLs from their index for the time being. I've found that this may take up to a couple of hours from the removal request to the time of actual removal.

As to how they were found, there's a good chance that Google crawled a link to a preproduction webpage and went from there.

Instead of spinning content, if you're looking to share the same message across three different platforms, just bullet point the message of your landing page and craft unique content for each one around the main messages you're trying to get across.

First time I've seen this type of featured snippet and now have seen it twice in the space of a couple hours.

Queries on Google UK desktop:

• surgical instruments
• Hawking radiation

Is this new? It definitely is for the "surgical instruments" search.

Google are highlighting related topics/keywords in bold beneath the usual featured snippet.

My Keyword Explorer is showing 15,000 keyword queries available. If this is correct, then this is awesome. I especially love the SERP analysis. Great job, guys!
