Does anyone have a clue about my search problem?
Thank you for responding Richard. That would have been easy if there were any purchased or bad links, but there were none. There were some links from blogs in sidebars and I did have two blogger blogs that referred to a number of our stories, but all of those were removed, and the two blogger blogs were deleted. Most of the linking domains are real businesses. I believe this is all about content, but I could be wrong. This is why I need help.

Dumb Google Places Problem
According to Google's, Ways to correct my local business listing to correct your business name, "If your business name isn't showing up correctly, edit the listing in your Google Places account. Verifying your listing allows you to personalize your business’s Place Page with custom fields, photos & videos, posts, and more." Depending on whether you have already verified the listing saying you are the business owner or if you just edited it for a local business the instructions may vary slightly. Hope this helps. Mike

Anyone good at ranking on Yahoo?
Thank you Cyrus. I do have Bimg WMT, but I haven't checked out all of thise things. Thank you, I will. Google's URL count is a little high now, since I moved a million pages onto subdomains two months ago. They are very slow in releasing the pages I don't want them to have. As you say, Bing is very low, and I don't understand why that is, because it should be around 96,350 Alan

Large Site - Advice on Subdomaining
I am ready to shout "NO" anytime I see anyone talking about using a subdomain... but you have made me consider it. I have a site (not nearly as large as yours) that has a lot of press releases given to us by government agencies and industry sites. (These are not SEO press releases, they are from people who have a message to get out.) For a few years these were about 2/3 of the content that we published. They ranked really well - often above the original source and we added a bit of unique commentary to each of them. In October '11 we took a Panda hit. Fortunately we simply dropped a couple positions on tons of pages - not a huge loss like some people see. To escape we did noindex / follow to the most popular releases and threw the rest overboard. That cut off search traffic (which hit our income) but kept the content on our site for visitors. Google rankings returned partially a couple months later and then a couple months after that everything was back to normal - but income was down a little. After reading your post, I am thinking about starting a subdomain for these press releases. Hopefully that will isolate the main site from any damage that the duplicate content might cause and allow them to pull a little traffic from search. About "index pages".... If I do this I will keep them on my main site because most of my content is there (my own unique content). Since Panda I have become highly selective about which press releases I publish and they are now a minority of new content. Thanks for the idea. Good luck with your site.

Do you think Google is destroying search?
I do tend to agree the quality In Google has gone downhill, I blogged about this In March after the latest Panda, there have been so many updates it looks like Google has lost its core reason for being the best search engine out there I predicted that profits from Google would rise from those last updates as you have genuine businesses that were doing ok on Google demoted to the nether regions to be replaced by garbage sites, non relevant sites or massive brands like Amazon These business now have to buy their traffic or go under, the same will happen to these garbage sites that have been promoted to the first page their revenue will rise whilst they are there, they will employ more staff to help cope, Google will fix whats currently broken and then cycle continues Just search for SEO UK , have a look at the backlinks , total manipulation yet been promoted to top spot, the company's earnings have been 10 fold since it's promotion

Can bad text URLs hurt pages?
Thank you Bryan. These are links on my site in old stories. Some aren't links, as in the example above, they are just plain text - no anchor tag. Some are anchor links, to website are now defunct Some are anchor links to websites that have now been parked Some are anchor links to websites that have now been taken over by unrelated people. So my aim is to clean them all up, but I'll do the most damaging ones first, because there are a lot of pages.

Do new Mozzers realise it takes effort to respond to their questions?
I have also noticed when answering questions myself and also when viewing unanswered questions that people regularly have their questions answered on here, but don't give credit to the people that are answering them. Are all mozzers aware that after so many automatic thumbs up from Q&A they no longer count, so answering a question and getting no recognition from the poster leaves the exercise almost pointless. I think that it is a case of lack of knowledge and forgetfulness, as I have regularly seen verbal acknowledgement of an answer but no thumbs up given. Is there no way round this? I know how busy the SEOMOZ staff are but to keep this community improving I think that this should be addressed as it is disheartening and I can imagine that some have already been put of from answering questions! Maybe look at appointing some specific Q&A moderators and not just associates?

Stop google indexing CDN pages
Thank you Edward. I don't have quite that problem, but I think you are right too. My CDN is set up to be Origin Pull. That means there is no need to FTP - the system just fetches content as requested. you should check that out if you have to ftp everything. But what you said that helped me is this - that I should have had one CNAME for images and anotehr CNAME for content and the content should be limited to a folder called content, so I can put the CSS files and the JS files in it and that way, the plain HTML pages at teh root level will never be affected. I also realized, while checking the system, that I wasn't using a canonical tag in the intermediate pages, as I was in the story pages. So I just added code to add canonical tags for all the intermediate pages and the front page. I do have a few other types of pages, so I will handle the code for them next. I think adding the canonical tag might fix the problem, but I will also work on reconfiguring the CDN and change over when the action is not too busy, in case it takes a while to propagate.

The 'small' one is Chester, a red Maine Coon. He weighs 20 pounds and he eats 4 packets of cat food per day. The big one is Lester, a blue Maine Coon. He weighs 22 pounds and he eats mainly biscuits, about 1.5 cups per day, and he drinks a lot of water. They talk a lot - but they know nothing about SEO! 25139_1401622207763_1448552004_31048632_297990_n.jpg 40021_1531415972526_1448552004_31364194_6540711_n.jpg

How come my Moz Points stopped incrementing
Alan, At the beginning of each month, any response or reply gets you a point up to 20 points. Once you hit the 20 level you points only come from others giving you a thumbs up, or moz endorsement, or new question that gets good answer or three thumbs, etc. So, hang in there and keep at it. As you give good answers you will get thumbs up. You also can have a quality question (this one has been asked a few times), say something that causes people to really think out of the box or consider a difficult white/black hat issue, etc. Good having you answering, stay at it. Best

Bing Traffic drop
OK I see what you mean, Robert - that is a great idea. I'm a programmer too, so a call to me isn't a phone call, it is a call of a program, in this case a direct access - from someone who typed in the url or has the site bookmarked. I'm mixing up my nomenclature, sorry for the confusion.

Why does SEOMoz crawler ignore robots.txt?
Hi Alan, The code should be ok Try to "drive-test" it with a custom crawl from http://pro.seomoz.org/tools/crawl-test then you will see if it works well. I am glad the link was useful. Gr., Istvan

Is Googlebot ignoring directives? Or is it Me?
Thank you Ryan. They completely ignored the meta tags., completely messing up our serps. So I put it back in robots. I wont trust google again to do the right thing.
