I'm confused. When a book goes out of print, does the URL change to this long OOP html page? Or does that book's URL then redirect to this page? Or *(shudders) do you make the OOP page re-titled to whatever the OOP book's page was?

If it were me I'd do the first scenario here. It's essentially the same concept as a 404.

If it makes sense to put their link on your site, then go for it. If it fits naturally and isn't out of place, then yes. Otherwise, no.

Basically just use your common sense. If it looks spammy on your site, don't use it.

Also, avoid having a page full of links. That's a huge red flag and could end up hurting you. And if they are putting your link on a similar page, you are better off without it.

no they aren't coming back and I would suggest not using them. I would also suggest tracking your competitors and using that to your advantage. It might be something you already knew, but you might also find a keyword in there you weren't thinking to target that the Google Keyword Tool produces a surprising number of searches for.

That, by the way, is why you should avoid meta keyword tags.

yes larry that is fine. so long as it is a single URL with a single HTML file on it, there is no duplicate issues. If you want to clarify I would suggest (if you aren't an SEOmoz pro member) to use a sitemap generator to ensure it isn't crawling multiple pages... But if that page is only listed once (and from what you are saying here that should be the case) then you have no duplicate content issues.

It's just the same as linking to one page from every page on your website. A redirect doesn't work much differently (although it does drop a small amount of linkjuice.)

You might consider no-crawling that OOP page anyway if you're still concerned. Not sure why you would need that one indexed in the first place.

just glanced at your backlink profile... you've lost something like 10,000 links over the last week or so. if those were all poison links, that's fantastic for you!

NOW you need to start building quality links or you'll never regain your rankings.

so get out there and do some link building. That's my best advice to you. apart from a redesign and better optimized content.

img alt tags are a problem as Dennis suggested. a quick peek shows one alt tag that says "search" and another that reads "McAfee SECURE sites help keep you safe from identity theft, credit card fraud, spyware, spam, viruses and online scams"

These are both perfectly wrong examples and should be fixed.

Also, clean up that HTML it's gonna be difficult to manage in such a cluster like that. (my own personal gripe.. you may work differently than I)

I'm having trouble determining this. The community at the google forums was not very helpful. Only had one response who said "yeah, manual good luck" and that was it.. Not too convincing to say the least.

Still haven't seen the effects of this. I've started a campaign and put together a ton of paperwork that I can continue on if need be but the last two days I've spent doing some good quality white-hat link building. I think I'm going to continue on that path until I start to notice a negative effect..

I do appreciate all of your help and may return to this topic sooner than later. I sure hope I don't have to, however!

i would assume anybody how searches the exact keyword of "how to tube" is not looking for fitness videos. if i wanted fitness videos i would search "fitness videos"

....

the keyword "how to tube" seems to be how to tube feed/how to tube quilt. Not how to be fit.

You need to target different keywords that are more relevant to your site. Forget about targeting your exact domain. If people want to go to how to tube's webpage, they'll find you at number 1 and go there. Otherwise they  need to know that you are the resource for fitness videos or whatever it may be...

You're competing with YouTube. Good luck with that.

Okay I don't know what to believe anymore. I just added a Squidoo page and a few links on there, the source reads nofollow on all even though I completed all necessary fields in the Squidoo guide but still it's showing up on OSE as a followed link..

no it won't make a difference to followed links all it will do is not follow or pass juice to links you chose to nofollow.

google does not parse or split up link juice it either passes on or doesn't.

It seems to me like you are suggesting that your PR can be spread out thin by too many followed links from your subdomain... I don't think this is true.

1.) Google does not follow nofollow links..

2.) iframes and javascript are concoctions of the devil himself.

3.) build links from high DA sites organically. Make sure they're relevant.

i have no idea as far as pay rates but i just wanted to say:

if I were looking for an SEO guy I would want more social media and writing skills and less HTML/web design skills.. I'd be looking for someone who can write great content and attract viewers. Design can be left to others.

Just saying... in case you were wondering what skills this person should work to improve.

i can't seem to figure out how to mark the categories and tags as noindex. any help here? i read the wordpress blog here on seomoz at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/setup-wordpress-for-seo-success but don't have access to plugins folders via the wordpress.com site...?

i'm clearly a wordpress noob and don't really love the platform but one of our blogs in particular is averaging 2500 visitors per month so I can't abandon it now.

I found your post helpful and have been reading that blog entry you linked to. I'm working on a couple wordpress blogs grandfathered into the company I work for and am trying to clean them up. They are providing something like a combined 800 links to my company's domain and we have a manual penalty with Google currently so I'd really like our backlink profile to be cleaned up.

So basically... I can't seem to install the Yoast plugins. Is that only for those who are hosting their wordpress offsite? Or how does that work... because basically, i go to wordpress.com and login and I can't upload files to directories or anything like that.

I guess I'm a wordpress noob, but proud to be. Because my experience with wordpress so far has been far from positive.

(backstory: when I got here, our company website had been developed in a Wordpress format and was a pain in the ass to work on. Nay, impossible to work on. I spent a month completely redesigning the site in HTML and have been happy as a clam since. But that is unrelated to the wordpress blogs we are running...)

shouldn't be hard to check the robots file.

go to www.yourdomain.com/robots.txt and tell us what that says. could be a server side issue as well even if they said "no changes.."

looking at the sitemap might help you figure out what's happening. like, which of the 65 pages are missing. Are they all pages located in the same sub-directory? etc.
