I always use SSI as this allows me to most flexibility. I can swap page elements in and out, and allow other to only edit body content of a page. A must when building CMS sites.

RE: How can I tell if a site I've never worked on before is "black-listed" by Google?
Look at your backlinks and make sure they are not spammy links. If so, request that they be removed.
Then check all citations and make sure information is accurate across the internet.
Check reviews. Perhaps there is a reputation problem needing management?

RE: For Service Sites, having a phone number in meta description ALWAYS a good idea?
No, that is not a conversion. You converted them to nothing they are still visiting. To convert is to change.
the act or an instance of converting or the process of being converted
Converting someone is the intent to make tangible contact. Purchase a product, sign up for an email list, get them to watch a video, contact the company. Something besides a static visitor. There has to be an interaction stronger than clicking on a pages within a website.
CTR is just that. Optimizing so you get the person onto the site. Once there, you try to convert them to [enter your goal for that visitor]

RE: Will putting images in a light box or photo gallery affect my image SEO?
Well a light box actually has the code in the site, but just does not show all the images at once.
a) should make the page lighter
b) still has all the image links, ALT, and image description (usually included with light boxes)
So from an SEO standpoint, as well as a user standpoint, this is all great!
Your light box should just show/hide images that is already within the code, so yes, ALT and Title tags are good practice.
If this is not the case with your light box, will you please provide a link or code snippet?

RE: Which tools are better? SEOMoz Tools or Bruce Clay's Tools.
I am giving a thumbs up to this post as I am also interested in the findings. I have only use, and plan to use SEOmoz as their tools are very good, and are getting better.
The biggest issue I have with SEOmoz is the lack of incorporating old tools into the new campaigns. I am sure that is being worked on.

RE: Multiple domains, which does Google like better?
If I understand your question correctly then Gianluca answered it over here:

RE: Post Title - Use the blog's name or not?
Name of blog is not as important as the title as SEs look from left to right regarding importance. Put name at the end IF need be. I would tend to omit the name of the site on blogs, unless the site is all a blog with no other content.

RE: How long after making changes will position on Google be altered?
I agree it depends with the crawl rate on the site.Updating a new sitemap helps if you are adding new URLs and posting new content on Facebook, Twitter, Blogs gets the attention of Google, so if it seems to be going slow, try getting social.
I think this question is already answered, unless you need more clarity?

RE: Blogging for an ecommerce site
I would always use, as Spencer has stated, .com/blog/ so you do not risk splitting the link juice.

RE: Is article writing and submission for link building a good idea in all circumstances?
Daniel, There are many ways to take advantage of links via writing articles for a restaurant. Guest blogging on other site that give reviews, writing your own blogs to include recipes, and submitting writing guest blogs for general restaurant or cooking sites. Most will allow a link back to the source if the article is written well.
http://www.squidoo.com/ comes to mind, but there are many, many more.
The key here is to have something of high interest to attract people. If you write a blog on your site, make sure you post on Twitter and Facebook. Recipes or cooking suggestions would be great for sharing on those platforms. When you do this, make sure you have both the Facebook Like button as with the Share this chicklets (the ones that show how many shares) as this encourages people to share when they see others doing so.

RE: Can I have a strong brand category page and a strong product page?
Brand Page
<title>Rolex Watches</title>
OR
Rolex 18K Gold Band & Diamonds
Rolex Gold and Silver Men's Watch
Rolex Gold and Silver Woman's Watch
Product Page
<title>Rolex Gold and Silver Woman's Watch | Rolex Watches</title>
If I have this correctly, your concern is the second title on the product page listing Rolex Watches twice vs. once if you leave off the Rolex prefix. And the fact that you get yelled at for having a link with Rolex pointing out of the Rolex brand page. Which is cannibalizing the link as you are sending anchor text out with the same keyword as you are targeting on the page.
This depends on if people are searching by brand or category. Gold Watch vs. Rolex Watches.
If you are selling more generic jewelry, then perhaps the brand is not as important. Also, if you are getting more traffic organically through SEs, or through CSEs? If 80% of the traffic is through CSEs then I would adhere to their way of doing things to rank better on them.
I would be more concerned with proper Page Title for rankings on your CSEs than cannibalization.
Two things to remember:
- Always build inbound links to the brand page to reinforce keywords for that brand.
- When a product is deleted, 301 that page back to the brand page. Again, reinforcing the keywords for that page as I am sure you will have some links coming into the product page.
I hope this helps

RE: Site Relaunch
I am also with Spencer on this one. If the new site is done, then 301 the old site to the new and just maintain the backend on the old.
If you admin logon is on the same domain, you might have to 301 individual pages over to the new site.
-
RE: Site structure question
No more than 3 levels deep.
Yes, as you have written.
site.com/products-category/product-001.html The brand name could be a hyper to the brand page
site.com/brand/ where this list all the brands. Click on a brand, pulls the product page with a filter.
Then I have some high level brands that list their products on the brand page as an all inclusive.
Now I did have to remove my 'brand' links from my product pages as I was getting too many links on the page, so look out for that.
You are on the correct path.

RE: URL question
Hi Dan,
If advance routine is not either a) a viable keyword structure, or b) a logical hierarchy structure, then I see no reason on having it. If however, it is a keyword used for a logical category structure then you should.
Now looking at your site, I see little reason to change the structure.
http://spytunes.com/practice-guitar/beginner-routine/what-is-the-s-e-p-r
This URL string makes sense and is only three deep. Which pages are not doing well for you?
As far as indexing, your most important pages should be two clicks from the home page (recently discussed in the WBF).
Although moving them one step up will not hurt as long as you remember to 301 the pages as to not spill the link juice.
If a particular page is weak, then start building links to that page. Such as linking to those pages from blog post, tweets, facebook post, and other external link building.
I hope that helps
-
RE: What do you do about links to constantly moving pages?
Yeah, I am starting to use this quite a bit with products moving off the site. No need to spill the juice

No because the 301 is dynamic. Not like adding to the .htaccess file. Also, make sure someone coding PHP does this as you need to make sure there are no white spaces before doing a header location or you will bomb the page.
Check your header to make sure you did the 301 correctly.

RE: Remove Scraped Content?
I would hope you had a link, when possible, back to your site. If not, then the page should be dated by creation and last update which Google can see. Although I would not leave anything up to guess work, but make sure you have links, and I would even put the date it was posted onto the post on your site like news article are. Just another indicator.
I would not remove the content if in fact, it did originate from you.

RE: Does Google count links on a page or destination URLs?
Google will only count the first instance of the link as Barry has pointed out. If you link to the same page, but different sections on that page, the # out the link.
Link: Link Text
Anchor on the page: <a name="anchor-on-pagee">Link Description</a>
SEOmoz has some blogs on this also.

RE: Absolute vs relative urls
What is important is that you remain consistent. Also, I like absolute when pages use rewrite rules, URLs can get broke.
Personally, I always use absolute.
