Online retailer has old product listing
I'm sure I can outrank the page with modest effort. However, that won't solve the problem. The sale price on the page give value shoppers a false sense of the actual price, and the description that includes "discontinued" gives the impression the product is no longer in production. I need to get the page removed from their database or de-indexed from the SERPs.

Do search engines look for keywords in the slug?
Search engines will definitely take your keywords in the slug into consideration whether in the folder or the file name but as Matt Cutts says long exact match file names can start to look a little spammy from a user experience perspective. If you keep your categories / subcategories in folder paths not only will your site appear easier to navigate for a user from SERPS but you will also find the site easier to manage and organise as your environment grows.

Better Business Bureau
BBB called me yesterday and I decided to give them a chance to convince me of their value rather than hand up on them. When I asked them what value they will they produce for my business the number one answer was the "SEO benefit" of getting a link from their website. This was over half of the guy's answer. So, it seems that the BBB is in the business of selling links, but when I went to BBB website for my region, all of the links to businesses were "nofollow".

Google Tag Manager
You're right, the codes are unique. They are so small (4 characters) I did not recognize them as unique IDs. Thanks for the info on the hostname filter as well. Best, Christopher

Google Remarketing Tag
It's an account level tag that works across any webpages on any domains it's included on. I've used remarketing pixels on microsites we run on separate domains, and within e-mails we send to target to those users with ads from our main site.

Does Google monitor which links are actually followed?
Nikele, that's a fairly broad statement. I don't think you mean to say that if I use Bing on Firefox that they monitor what I do, provided I don't have a Google toolbar enabled. They do keep track of many things, but you generally need to be using their search engine, or the Chrome browser, or have their toolbar installed. They don't always reveal what factors they use in rankings, but have said that they don't use Google Analytics data in ranking.

ECommerce and microdata
Amazing! The question from Christopher was posted in 2012. 2 years later, Volusion still seem to be running years behind as far as online marketing goes. They have a reasonably good system for building an ecommerce website, but when it comes to online marketing, they struggle. They have still not implemented Microdata for products. Not only that but their Google Shopping Feed has to be Manually published, instead of allowing the feed to get updated periodically, like daily etc. They do not support all the latest fields and attribute details that Google Merchant centre now offer such as Mobile Links, Attribute Lengths Making Availability mandatory (which was enforced September 30, 2014) and so much more. For Basic ecommerce the Volusion product seems great. As soon as you wish to really start utilising resources outside Volusion, Good Luck!

How to skip all rewrite rules
Thanks for the quick response. Yes, I have access to edit the .htaccess file. I'll try using the [L] tag for the virtual domains. Best, Christopher

Unexplained spikes in Google Analytics
Many people experience the 'google Tease', where for days at a time, in blocks you will sometimes see these bumps in traffic. A recent article talking about this, I put in below. I bet, more than likely - this is the case.. but you could go back over trending data and look to see if it has happened before and if you see patterns in the these traffic increases http://www.seroundtable.com/google-tease-14587.html Cheers. Hope this helps a little. Oh - I should also add that you should block any and all IP's in GA tracking that might screw the data (remove your IP, friends or office IP's, network IP's from people you know etc)... so clean the data up.. if you haven't already

IPTC information in JPEG images
If search engine robot can't read this information then it means that it is useless for search engine optimization. It will only help to increase your brand name population ! The best way to check is to place an image with your details on your website. Then open Google Webmaster tools open it as a Google bot. I am pretty sure that it can't read this hidden information. Cheers, Russel

Link value personal pages on .edu
Normally I would only look at the PR of the page, not so much at the domain. The reason is some pages are much stronger than others. A PA 53 sounds like a good page to get a link from. I haven't followed up too much on link building strategies lately, but I think the PA is divided by the number of external links. In this case the link juice would be diminishing as more links are on the page.

Low PA high DA
Christopher, I pulled these urls and looked at them and it opened a can of worms for me. I have submitted a question as the result: http://www.seomoz.org/q/press-release-using-moz-bar-ose-is-reading-domain-not-page-how-why The url for HPWhite press releases shows up as HPWhite.com on mozBar link analysis, but as the press release url for Golfer's Advice?!?!!?? Never seen that before.

Selecting a new domain name
Hi Robert, thank you. Indeed, it would be great to have some research to validate the actual answer, if indeed there is a definitive answer. From reading my original answer and your reply above, it seems that we are both in general agreement that hyphens in domain names tend to have no bearing on SEO. User Experience is key to choosing the better option rather than SEO. We've just gone about explaining the same thing in a different way. From my experience and knowledge, hyphens in a domain name have Zero Direct Impact on SEO and search rankings, they make no difference either way. However, there are Usability factors such as User Engagement that do affect SEO; if having a hyphen in a domain name or not affects the click through rate one way or the other, that could well have a small part to play in the overall ranking algorithm, thus in search rankings. Personally, like yourself, I like to see hyphens in domain names because it does often read better. So to summarise, I believe there is No Direct Impact when it comes to hyphens in a domain name, however I believe there Is In-Direct Impact through User Experience factors. With best regards, Simon

Keyword reversal
No, would be the short answer. Every domain builds its own value in the SERP's. So registering that domain will involve lots of work to get it ranking. If you do want to go for a exact match domain, I'd go for red-wagon.com in stead of wagonred.com. That way link building becomes more easy and red wagon and wagon red are two different things. Using the new domain to help you rank on your main site will be a losing battle in the end. You can't pass a lot of link juice to your main site from your new domain. It's only 1 IP, 1 link (or only a few will count towards your rankings). So if you really want to rank for that keyword, build a niche site on the new domain.

Flash magazines
I chatted with bluetoad tech support. She indicates that Google does index their publications, but did not know if the vendor links were follow or nofollow and will have to get back to me. Is it possible for flash magazine publishers to provide the content to googlebots, even though the magazine is by subscription only? Best, Christopher

When good domain names go bad
Your 1st question: Go to www.google.com and type in the domain name, with and without the "www." For example, search for "www.domain.com" and then search for "domain.com" (without using quotes around the domain name). If the domain shows up in the search results then it is not banned in Google. To investigate a domain further at Google, see what Google returns when you perform a site: search at Google. For example, if you go to Google and search for "site:www.domain.com" and then "site:domain.com" and Google comes back with "Your search - site:www.domain.com - did not match any documents," the site most likely is banned at Google. Your 2nd question: Was best answered below. Do not associate with any sites that have been determine to be spam, been penalized or even banned from Google.

Third party pages
I am unclear on what you are asking. The only thing I can share based on your question is to noindex any content you don't wish Google to index or otherwise have concerns about.
