First of all, to easily see followed/nofollowed links I suggest you download a tool like the MozBar. It's available for both Chrome and FF - http://www.seomoz.org/seo-toolbar. Only takes a second and it's very helpful! (There's other tools out there also).

Thirdly, the domain is of pretty high authority. However, buying links from directories is a less practised (and recommended) approach to SEO. If the directory is in your niche and is relevant to your site, go ahead (if the costs are within reason). If you're interested in purchasing directory links I'd only invest in the really top quality directories such as BOTW and business.com.

For a full list of directories, SEOmoz has their own recommendations - http://www.seomoz.org/directories. Again, only list your site on there if it's relevant and adds worth. I suggest start with just a few niche directories.

In addition to providing content that is useful and concentrating more on social media (which I both agree on), you have to ensure that your site is well structured for SEO success.

Read this short article about on site optimisation factors - http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/on-page-factors. Remember, you need to worry about external (links, shares etc) and internal (on site factors, a very good internal linking strategy etc).

These 2 go hand in hand, you need to have both to have successful SEO results.

Thanks for the superfast answer, appreciate it.

OK I switched that option from Yes to No. This fixed the temporary redirect problem. However, now both the www and non www versions are returning a 200 response (see http://www.ragepank.com/redirect-check/).

Is this an easy fix in Magento? I know in other systems such as Volusion we don't have access to htaccess. I'm guessing I can't do anything about this and I just have to worry about setting up the correct canonical?

I've recently taken over a client who uses the Magento platform and there was definitely a duplicate issue with his homepage. It redirected www to non www, however the canonical tag was setup wrong and pointing to the www version.

When I looked at OSE for both versions the non www has only 7 linking domains and a page authority of 32. The www version has 24 linking domains and page authority of 39. As the domain is fairly new, I decided to redirect the non www to www and keep the canonical the same. (I changed the internal linking structure etc).

When I run both URLs through this tool: http://www.ragepank.com/redirect-... it's returning a whole bunch of 302, rather than 301 redirects. What's the deal with that? Is that a Magento setting that I can fix or something a little harder?

I'm not sure if it's proper etiquette to post the URL of a client, so if that would help and is OK, please let me know.

Hi All,

OK we all know the merit in G+, Authorship etc.

I'm a regular user on G+ and I work hard to keep my profile up to date and with fresh content. I have no doubt my increased number of followers has helped my blog rank (which my G+ account is linked to).

My question is - is there any merit at all in setting up a separate page for my blog so I can get +1s for it (probably very few). Much like any company page that gets +1s and people to follow that company. Or is this just plain silly and I should concentrate on building my personal profile?

I pretty much agree with Matt. Google has invested a huge amount of time and money in G+ - it's going to become a MAJOR focus in 2013 (even more so than it currently is). Be warned, if you don't have a G+ strategy, you'll be left behind (IMO).

As for the other points, well I just hope you are correct! Great answer BTW.

When you moved domains, did you redirect all the existing content/domain to the new one? It seems that it doesn't redirect (http://www.rxmagazine.mx/ is still there).

Are any of the existing links pointing to your new domain?

Please keep in mind that this data can take up to 60 days to populate. The linkscape index takes a while.

I agree with Doug - I would never have the H1 containing a logo. It should include 3-5 words that are you main targeted keywords/phrase for that page. (Be it company name, blog name, what you are offering etc)

Change the template so the logo isn't inside a H1 tag. I think nearly every SEOer would agree with this.

My recommendations:

1. Fill it out as completely as you can
2. Link to other social profiles/pages in the External Links section
3. Add links to your blog and homepage

It doesn't take that long, and you get a number of links from an authority domain.

A very broad question but you've basically got to do 2 things:

Bounce Rate - Ensure your search terms closely match up to customer behaviour. If they search for "Washington Real Estate" you have to ensure that the page they land on matches what they would typically expect to find on that page. Your site must have an effective layout and present info in a way that is useful to your customer. If they land on the page, you want them to then visit subsequent areas of your site (be it for sale, for rent, info about the area etc).

Time on site - This is coupled with bounce rate. If you create quality landing pages with quality content on the rest of your site, you'll be seen by customers as a resource in this area, and they'll likely stay on the site for longer searching for more information.

Basically, quality content and a quality user experience.

Your on site optimisation seems pretty good. However, when I ran your site through OSE and looked at the number of domains linking to your site, well you'll see the issue:

You need to work on building more links. 47 overall linking domains isn't that many, I'd try and build that number up.

I'd be careful doing this. You need to plan your strategy very carefully.

For instance, for the page http://www.rent.com.au/rent/properties-in-north+perth-wa-6006 you still might want that indexed for very specific, longtail searches about rental properties in north perth.

I'd start with some on site optimisation of existing pages. Get more content on whatever page you want to rank for and make sure the keyword is in title tags, alt image tags, headers, body text, anchor text from other parts of the site etc.

Also, try and build links to the pages you want to rank for, that will give Google a good indicator.

The noindex, follow - I would do a full site audit and identify exactly what pages you want to apply this to. This should be done VERY carefully.

Just having a quick glance - if you go a Google search for 'rental properties perth' for your site (enter "rental properties perth site:rent.com.au" in Google) - your top ranking page for that term is http://www.rent.com.au/rent/properties-in-north+perth-wa-6006. I assume you'd want to rank for a page like this, however: http://www.rent.com.au/rental/wa/perth

Is that the case?

The URL http://www.rent.com.au/rental/wa/perth rates as only a 'B" in SEOmoz's on page report card tool. The keyword is only mentioned only 3 times on the page, only once on the body.

There's obviously some issues with that - plus your internal linking structure. You need to direct all 'Perth' type pages to a central Perth location.

Sub directory is best - those links will explain why (and perhaps put your mind at rest as to why the members of SEOmoz suggest that).

Jason, log in to Google Webmaster tools and there is a section for sitelinks.

What you have to do is 'demote' the sitelinks you DON'T want to appear. In this case these would be about us, contact us etc. As time goes on these pages will probably (it's not always guaranteed) be replaced as a sitelink by another page. You have to continue to demote pages that you dont want to appear until the right ones appear. Of course, you can just demote a bunch of pages before they even appear to save time.

This process can take a while and is not always 100%. The best  way to get each of these individual lawyer pages to appear is to build up the authority of these pages with backlinks etc, coupled with the above technique.

Agree with Davinia 100%. Write alt tags for the user - how would you BEST describe the image in a few words? I try to include a few keywords/phrases but if I have a page with 10 images I'm not going to include the same keyword(s) in every single image - probably around 50-80% of the images.
