Internal Linking - in content vs navigation menu
Agreed. Think it's most important that your internal linking makes your site as user friendly as possible. Sites that have obviously only placed internal links for search engines can be very annoying.

Will Google handle "this not that" pages differently?
hotel is a generic term no one owns you can rank for this Google is not that smart. yet lol godaddy is a branded name so most likely godaddy complains and takes legal action on anyone trying to use their name to create brand confusion. That is against Google's TOS.

Using Press Release For Promoting Linkbait?
I could not have put it better myself you that the nail on the head. The quality press releases are the backbone of what most quality journalists write about. If I'm in the plastics business and looking for release liner and flexible packaging happens to post a story about W & H upside down building a new water cooled extruder I will most likely see it is sourced from a press release that was put out by W&H without those press releases that journalists don't really have a reliable source to base their story on. The example I gave is a real thing that happened to me when looking at blown film extrusion lines a niche business. I think press releases are a fantastic way to get links and source material. Check out PRWeb and pit them against newswire for pricing. Sincerely, Tom

Will Google penalize for backlinks on non-indexed pages?
I would think that Google does still crawl these sites (or have just blacklisted them). Therefore, they would still have a negative effect on your client's website. I would recommend taking a look into Google's new disavow tool - you will be able remove the association with bad links. Dr Pete recently wrote a great article on the disavow tool - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/googles-disavow-tool-take-a-deep-breath

What are your favorite tactics for getting links to money-pages?
We worked on a website that sells silicone wristbands. Not an exciting product anymore by any means. What we did to help create a buzz was partner with various awareness causes during a given month and posted polls and funds raised results on landing pages. Then we had the awareness cause we worked with link to those landing pages where visitors can see the amount of money raised, read more info about the cause and even place an order to support the cause. If client has a mailing list of any significant size, you can send out email blasts offering discounts, free upgrades or other incentives that are further explained on landing pages and build traffic and possibly links to that page as well. Im also looking forward to hearing some strategies others may have to offer.

Bulk keyword competition tool?
Hi Adam, I am a big fan of Long Tail Pro for keyword competition research. It allows you to add as many of your own keyword phrases and check the competitiveness, but I find it more useful by putting in 5-10 keyword phrases and then it will use the Google AdWords Keyword Tool to come up with literally thousands of related phrases to analyze by competition and search volume. Click on an individual keyword phrase and you will get a more detailed competitive analysis of the top 10 results in Google. I'm pretty sure there is a free trial but I found it to be one of the most useful SEO tools I have come across in years so it is money well spent. Here is their site - http://www.longtailpro.com/long-tail-pro-software/

OSE Backlink results - reported link not actually there?
The last OSE index update was on May 1, but those links are from a crawl period of roughly Jan thru mid-March IIRC, so there is a lag. The link has probably moved to a different page or expired or is gone for another reason. The next index update is scheduled for next week and should represent much newer data.

Looking for sites hit by Penguin for research
Thanks. I've seen that data, but I think they failed to distinguish between Panda 3.5 results and Penguin results.

Unwanted spam pharmacy links
Hmmm. Their situation is further complicated by a less than clean link profile (not counting the spam links). They have very few high quality links. Makes me think that a new domain is a possibility to consider.

Any insight on what factors Penguin is looking at?
Given the recent warnings in google webmaster tools for some website owners I would say they are looking at your backlink profile for unnatural link profiles with heavy exact match anchor text and links from untrusted sources. In terms of onsite, footer nav links using exact match, keyword stuffing on page, duplicate content. I feel as if none of this is new news but they are trying to enforce and be more aggressive with how they treat websites on these factors.

Best press release distribution option for real PR results?
The right wire to use depends very much on the industry you're targeting, the geography and how much you've got to spend. Since you're in the US, I'm assuming the target is US and national - I quite like PR Newswire, but on the whole, any premium wire should get you some pickup. Just don't expect journalists in the national newspapers etc. to pick up your news from the wire service and use it. Getting solid media coverage is core 'media relations' work - think of it as similar to the outreach you might do for linkbuilding. There is some skill to it and contacts in the media help a lot. You could hire a PR freelancer/agency with contacts in the industry you're targeting to pitch the story out or if you need to do it yourself, here's the minimum steps you should consider: Build a list of targets 'pre-sell' the story to some key journalists/bloggers to forewarn them/gauge interest Update your release based on 1 Issue the release to your targets via email and also on the wire (keep an eye on any news/announcements due on the same day that could 'drown' your news) Follow up with people that don't cover it - find out why so you can do better next time/remind them since their inbox will probably be overflowing with press releases and they may have missed it

Any experience regarding what % is considered duplicate?
Check out this video: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-dealing-with-duplicate-content It will give you a much more thorough answer than just a percentage of uniqueness. But if you want that kind of answer I mostly hear guesses between 20% - 40% unique content.
