Geotargeting in Webmaster Tools - Is there an expected ranking benefit in the geotargeted region ?
Hi Dirk i had heard it was possible to geotarget sub domain and sub folders by setting up new profiles for them, but havnt tried to yet but pretty sure its possible In this case its trying to attract 2 different regions/areas via one tld: worldwide english with the domain.com, then Turkey via domain.com/tr. Then there is a domain.com/de subfolder with German content but thats domain mapped to domain.de so is essentially a second TLD to target German language and region. Thanks for sharing that interesting info, i think for the moment at least and as you and others have suggested not to tinker with geotargeting in GWT yet and see how things develop first All Best Dan

Multiple links on same page and multiple ref= attributes
The question on stackoverflow was regarding the second question. One link with two rel attributes, one invalid ("sunshine"), one nofollow. Html5 spec dictates that the second (valid nofollow) attribute must be ignored, thus leaving the link dofollow. I understand your logic with this statement, but I do not believe that you are correct in your assumption that a double no follow will leave the link as a follow. Most likely the erroneous code will leave the link completely ignored by the bots and even cause them not to crawl passed it. Can you correct the link to remove any unnecessary REL properties? one two If the second link is ignored, can this behaviour be changed by adding #foo or ?foo to the url? In this case, I would remove the first link if possible. Again, if this information is no follow, or contains duplicate links it will really cause more problems than solutions. If these links aren't on your site, but in a linking sources site, contact the webmaster and ask them for help correcting these links so that you can receive the full credit for any link juice.

Why the location of my queries is wrong?
Hi... I don't know if you have discovered the reason of the mysterious traffic from Sweden. I've thought about it, and the only justifications I can think about are these: or your company name corresponds also to a real Swedish brand, so Swedish people are entering in your site for brand name searches; or that your domain name - if it a generic one - once was the domain name of a Swedish website, hence with still enough link popularity from Swedish website, so that i can still rank in google.se

How to provide value when clients slow at executing
Hello Mike, This is definitely a situation where proper analytics and consistent reporting that show losses when changes are not implemented (and gains made when they are) is necessary. If you can prove that slow action (or inaction) on their part is hurting their bottom line, then they will be spurred to make the necessary changes. It can be a challenge to maintain willpower and work ethic when you know that small changes on the part of your client will make discernible differences to their success. I have a client that followed this same pattern - small alterations such as additional content or meta tags were multi-month endeavors. The action we took was a combination of the ideas offered by Martijn and EGOL - we began by making monthly analytics reports for 3-month periods showing the cost of inefficiency (noting changes and the average amount of time they took compared with revenue figures before/after said changes were made). After 3 months, we made the alterations ourselves at no cost to see what kind of difference it made. Within 2 months of the changes we made, their bottom line had increased by 18% when compared to their average monthly earnings. When we showed them this, we made the argument that we could be responsible for their ongoing updates (for a fee) and they were happy to move ahead with that system. 2 years later and we still have a great working relationship with them. As marketers and SEO's, it is our job to lead our clients to revenue, even if they don't understand how it works or place little value on it. We have to provide value and get their buy-in. After that, we can take on more challenging (and inspiring) projects to keep ourselves entertained. Hopefully this gives you some ideas for moving forward. Keep plugging away and feel free to fire any questions you have my way. Best regards, Rob

Changing old style WP menu built with child pages or not?
How big is the site? If it's say, under a few hundred pages then you can just leave the structured URLs, and I usually prefer this for good UX and architecture. If the site is much bigger, it might be a little more complex and the specifics could affect things a little.

Canonical URL on search result pages
Thanks David, Thanks for your response, very helpful I agree, there is a lot of room for improvement. Its written on an old .aspx CMS platform and i'm having a real nightmare trying to get used to it.. It ain't no Wordpress - that much is clear! Page titles + descriptions were the first things I was going to get started on, I've just been defining the core keywords before I get going! Cheers

Emails marked as spam?
Hey YNWA What a nightmare! Yes like Mat said... use http://mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx to check and monitor your domain. If the emails are going to spam, you are more than likely listed somewhere. You can find where the domain in question is listed and (once you've corrected the issue) submit to be removed. NOTE: The sites that require you to pay a fee to be removed are not important and you can disregard them. Only submit to the main ones. Those do not make you pay to play. Good luck!!

More than 1 PPC campaign bad?
Rob has answered this perfectly. However, I would add, don't try to spread yourself too thinly. In my experience (by no means extensive btw) I've found PPC to be a bit of a numbers game - you need quite a lot of clicks before you get a conversion. I suggest you try a remarketing campaign if you only have a low budget as the clicks are often cheaper, and the traffic highly targeted (and has been exposed to your brand previously, so more likely to convert). When I set up our remarketing lists/campaigns I found this article incredibly helpful: http://www.ppchero.com/ultimate-guide-to-adwords-remarketing/ I've been running remarketing campaigns for several months, and whilst the ctr is considerably lower than search campaigns, the conversion rate is as high or higher, and of course the cost per click is minuscule in comparison. I find it a cost effective solution and helps convert traffic that may never have revisited the website otherwise. Depending on how much traffic your website gets, you may have to wait a while for the lists to populate, so I'd set some up anyway, as you may want to switch it on during a busy period (such as mothers day if you sell flowers, or christmas if you sell gifts - whatever works for your business) - better to have something up your sleeve and never use it than want to use it and have to wait! Good luck and best wishes, Amelia

Mobile website on a different URL address?
Depending on the platform, your client might already have access to an m.domain mobile site. Some of the older platforms, like Volusion, haven't even offered responsive designs yet, which is part of what makes them so expensive for their customers. They basically have to pay a company for a complete template redesign. In my opinion, the responsive design is best practice for SEO, but an m.domain site would improve user experience which can lead to higher CTR and higher conversions. If your client cannot afford to move just yet, then the m.domain is the lesser of two evils. It will improve customer experience and hopefully conversions, and then maybe moving to a responsive design in 6 months would be an option. I just went down this road with the company I work for. We were in Volusion and just simply out grew it. So we moved to Big Commerce. With the size of our site, it cost us about $1400 a month. The responsive designs were free, and they handled the entire migration for us. At the end of the day, the sacrifice of changing platforms didn't cost us much more than we were spending with Volusion, and the benefits of improved SEO and User Experience will pay for the swap within months. I am not sure what your current situation is, but if you haven't looked into Big Commerce, I would definitely try. It can't hurt to present all three scenarios to the client. At least they will be able to weigh the pros and cons of everything. Staying where they are without an m.domain, staying where they are and adding an m.domain, or moving to a more advanced system like Big Commerce with a fully responsive design.
