  • I agree with sir here as most people consider these URLs are spammed but yeah normally good shorten URLs are 302 so there is no impact of it on the original URL you want your audience to land on! Just a quick participation!

  • I agree with everyone here, especially about links not being as important or at least not the 1st thing to focus on. One other thing I stress to new consultants is read the Google My Business Guidelines. Then read them again with a fine toothed comb. There are many subtleties that are not spelled out and many unwritten rules, so you need to sort of read between the lines. But things are much more clearly spelled out in the new guidelines. Here they are in case you have not read yet: https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177?hl=en&ref_topic=4540086 Read all the + Learn more links too. The last thing you want starting out, is to unknowingly break the rules and get a client deleted or suspended. But if you are very cautious about the rules and stick to Miriam's list you'll be in good shape.

  • Hello Becky, Yes it could be interpreted as their gaining links and your not. But it could also be interpreted as the sites their backlinks are on are gaining links, and the sites your backlinks are on are losing links. If your backlink is on my site and my site's DA goes up by 30 points, then your site's DA will also go up by a certain number of points. Your DA increase would be dependent on where your backlink is on my site. If your backlink was on my homepage, then I'd say your DA would probably go up by about 4 points. And yes Becky, the only way to increase DA is via inbound links. But I would also try to move my clients focus away from this metric as it's not that relevant to traffic or rankings. In many niches, I see sites with lower DA dominating the rankings and getting more traffic.

  • If you can actually load the regular URL then you should canonical to it (it is best practice to canonical all of your pages to themselves), but if going to that page just redirects to the escaped fragment then you should update how your site build is set up so that you don't have the escaped fragment any more.

  • I don't think they're coming out with HTTP/2 as another option vs HTTP, each with their separate pros and cons. I don't look at it as HTTP vs HTTPS, for example, but rather HTTP 2.0 - the next generation of HTTP. There may be short term, temporary issues as it rolls out. There may be hosts that take a while to get on board. But aside from that, I am hearing that it will seriously speed up load times as it will be able to load multiple elements at a time simultaneously, as well as an increase in security, which is much needed in today's day and age.

  • It means that you are not using that tag on that page. Do you have duplicate content? If so, try to clean it up by creating unique content or use proper tags to mark duplicates. • Ah thank you the webmaster tools list reads much more healthier, so that's good. The link I was talking about was in the hotfrog directory, in the correct category, with photos and video too, and lots of unique text I wrote about my products and services and it shows up in webmaster tools too thanks for answering

  • That's a great location but it seems like most of the info there is pretty spread out in regards to my question. I was interested in figuring out if the number of external link on a site will influence their own reputation, and how. For example, if site A has 500 external link, and site B has 1000 - and assuming all other metrics are the same for both sites - which one should I try to pursue as far as getting an external link to my own site (i.e. which has the highest SEO value for me)? Also, I am assuming that when a site has 500 external links, that is 500 external links going out (not coming in).

  • How long has it been since you deleted the old sitemap and provide the new one ? I think your Google account may just need some extra time to update correctly. it seems to me that Google updates in my WMT account seems to have a little lag time. I think it will update correctly after a few weeks to a month. I don't think you have any actual problem as much as Google is not actually finding and updating new info correctly. I would wait and see what happens after a short while. Joe

  • Good Morning! I have been in a similar situation and I found two different videos which helped me out in my decision making process. This is Matt Cutts on keywords in domain names https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAWFv43qubI This is Matt Cutts on keywords in URL paths https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=971qGsTPs8M What I ended up doing was making a short list of "static" pages of content that wasn't going to change much. Think of these as my services. So for example www.domainname.co.uk/asbestosis-diagnosis www.domainname.co.uk/asbestosis-treatment or www.domainname.co.uk/asbestosis/diagnosis www.domainname.co.uk/asbestosis/treatment Then from there in our blog section, I started making the more specific, long tail keyword URLS. www.domainname.co.uk/how-to-diagnose-asbestosis www.domainname.co.uk/how-to-treat-asbestosis In the long run, I don't believe it will negatively impact you repeating keywords. Although I may be wrong. My personal thoughts are that Google is getting closer and closer to searching things like a human would. So I try and view my URL path like a filing system. If I can understand it, and it makes sense to Google, then it's going to end up safe. The last thing you want to do is make a system that is overly redundant and/or spammy, although again i'm not entirely sure if this would qualify as a spam URL path. Hope this helps!

  • Our site hosts b2b content and while I agree with your scenario in general, we do have some niche content that some users would have no interest in. A better example instead of a toy industry site might be a construction industry site. Let's say our content is generally related to the construction industry and our readers work in or own construction businesses. We might have brands and individual publications that cover everything from concrete innovations to lumber pricing to interior design. While all of the content is generally is related to construction, most interior design professionals may have zero interest in lumber pricing. That's essentially where we're at. For branding purposes the interior design folks think it would be better to have their own uniquely branded website, but they'll obviously feel the pain of the break from the main construction site.

  • It just means that you have those things on separate pages. Google indexed them so like Laura said, you need to put a noindex tag so Google can stop indexin those page After that, wait for it to disappear. It's not that critical if you feel like you need to remove it from the index asap.

  • Hi Tyler, Is this still going on? My first reaction would be to say that Google will probably figure it out over time and the notifications will disappear/not reoccur. Have you seen new notifications of duplicate content since you made these changes? Are these pages still appearing in the index? If not I wouldn't be super concerned - WMT updates lag behind what's going on in the index by quite a bit. If they are, take a look at the cache date - it may be that Google needs to crawl these pages again to find the canonical tag. Since Google doesn't always "get" canonical tags, you may not see this error go away in WMT - as long as those pages are no longer ranking for anything, though, you should be OK. The redirects should stop registering as duplicate content sooner rather than later, though.

  • Thank you to everyone for all of your help and suggestions.  I guess this will be on the top of my 'to do list' switching from dynamic to static.  I already have some 301's in place from my site had a .php extension to the new extension now with ./?... etc.  Is it okay to re redirect them?  How many redirects are too many? Thank you so much! Sandra

  • I agree with Laura, Big Commerce, OpenCart, OSCommerce, these would all be great solutions. I think Big Commerce is the best hosted platform on the market right now. OpenCart and OSCommerce are not hosted solutions, and they are both open source so you would have to have some coding experience to get them set up.
