  • Joe, thanks so much for this idea. It's one I've been playing around with for a while -- we've certainly noticed the same pattern (with some noteworthy exceptions), and we frequently discuss whether or not it's cause for concern. We've got the data, and would certainly benefit from the experience of putting such a post together, so I might just treat your reply here as the straw that broke the camel's back. With regard to well-known SEO leaders, I have a theory about that, too -- I like to draw an analogy to classes at a university. In the early days, everyone is a freshman, getting their bearings and eager to try things out and participate. The sophomore year brings wisdom that wasn't there before. By junior year, you could throw the term "expert" around, but time starts to become a factor -- reading and commenting on blog posts isn't given quite the same priority it once was -- and by senior year, you're thinking about what comes next. Then that happens. I think, for the most part, the industry legends that made this blog what it is today have largely moved on to other phases of their lives. Some are CEOs trying to keep their own companies in order, some have even left the industry altogether. In their place, though, we have a new cohort of freshmen and sophomores that'll take the Moz Blog to the next level. I've seen plenty of folks contributing incredibly thoughtful comments and participating regularly, and I think it won't be long before they're seen at the same level as those original legends. My two cents. Now to get to work on that post...

  • Nice feedback here. The one thing you've asked about that I don't believe I've seen addressed is your question regarding having geographic modifiers in your business name. You are correct - Google does not want these, unless they are part of your legal business name or DBA. This was a bit of a goofy situation. Originally, Google's guidelines expressly forbid the use of anything but the legal business name or DBA in the business title. Then, in the fall of 2013, they suddenly changed their policy on this, permitting business owners to add descriptors. So, at that point, lots of business owners jumped on this and added city names and other descriptors. A little over a year later, Google reversed their policy, returning to their original stance on this in which they do not want city names, state names, etc. in the business title unless they are part of the real-world business name. You can read the guidelines here, under Name: https://support.google.com/business/answer/3038177?hl=en

  • I literally did this, we had 1500 domains and I had to condense them all down into one two things to note: If you are moving Wordpress content into a clean Wordpress install make sure you copy the MySQL database to the new site and change the wp-config file so that it reflects the database that you want to use. If you are moving Wordpress content into an existing Wordpress install it might be easier to just manually edit them. I found that pulling text and importing them into something like TextWrangler allowed me to make sure all the formatting was correct, although the WYSIWYG is good, its not perfect. From there I just uploaded all of my pictures, pasted the new formatted text into the Wordpress text editor and added the photo! Let me know if you have any questions!

  • Hey Marton Try and think of ways of capturing a wider audience to care about your industry. Could you run a contest - free personal horoscopes for a year, for example - and look to promote it via social networks, bloggers and buzzfeed type news websites? Can you think of famous horoscopes on the days of big or prophetic events? Like when a horoscope was eerily accurate to something major that happened in the world? (Think 33 Horoscope predictions that will shock you") Maybe a major sporting event? I wonder what Jordan Spieth's was before winning the Masters? Or how about contacting a Taylor Swift or other celebrity fan site and offer them free weekly horoscopes on the celebrity every week? These are just ideas from the top of my head - but in reality they are just variations of the principles that you mentioned - trying to earn backlinks from quality websites, increase your social footprint etc.  The added benefit of these approaches is that they - may - get a bit more exposure and so could result in more referral traffic and general good PR for your site. No doubt, it's a tricky task - but the good thing about horoscopes is that everyone has one, if they choose to read it! So take a look to see if you could try and capture a wider audience by playing to their interests and incorporating that with your website. Hope it helps.

  • Hi Erik If the pictures are relevant to the content, named correctly in their file name, and also have proper alt tags - you're golden, don't worry about it! If you find over time that the images start to lose their rankings and you need to optimize these images more, I would check out Yoast's post on Optimizing Images for SEO and Google's Image Optimization guide. Yoast's post will cover basic image optimization fundamentals from a SEO standpoint while Google's guide will help you find optimal settings for your images, like format capabilities, pixel dimensions and so on. This is especially important as screen sizes change and responsive design is more prevalent. Hopefully these help! Good luck!

  • Hello Landon, I'm not a content curator professional but some of my employees use it everyday. I think they have recently done a great job by improving a lot their functionalities, and the paid version could be worthy. As far as I remember, you get some advantages versus the free version: Decide the subject where you want to archive content (the number of subjects depends on the version you have) Team curation Customize templates, newsletters... By the way, hehe I don't work at Scoop.it at all!!

  • Not all websites will be hit instantly, it's a rolling update which means it will be implemented over time and sites will be affected over time. So if your site is not mobile friendly and you still rank well today, it doesn't mean you got away with it.

  • Hey Charlie - I realize this is a slightly old question post, but I am just now starting to dig into the details on this for my clients.  One thing many of these articles that offer a 'solution' is failing to address is what number to actually put on your local search listing. I understand DNI and as long as your website has your 'regular' static local number on the homepage, and you use the static number in all of your local SEO efforts - You should not see any penalties.  I have many clients that use DNI and do not have an issue, plus I have read that Google can even read the javascript and see the number the DNI is replacing. The DNI is only useful if someone actually clicks past the initial search result to call - So basically, you may still only be getting partial data if someone does not click to your site but just rather calls the number in search results. What my clients are now asking for, and I am pushing back on , is whether we can use separate call tracking numbers on separate Local SEO mediums. Here is an example - Google: 800-555-1234 Facebook: 800-555-1235 Bing Places: 800-555-1236 This would still keep the static/owned number on the site - but show us who is calling from where.  This would give good data in call tracking reports but from what I know and have researched, kills local SEO success due to NAP inconsistency.

  • Hi Rosemary, In simple term answer would be No, that won't have a negative impact on your QS because the landing page is the web page the user lands after all redirects. Second thing I would like to point out is Remember that the most important "component" of the QS is CTR. Thanks

  • Hi Laura, Thanks for writing us, and we would be happy to take a look. if possible can you email this question to help@moz.com. We know that providing listing information on a public forum is not the greatest experience so by emailing help@moz.com a helpster should be able to review the account to make sure that everything is in tip top shape. One thing that I will say is that listing information generally takes about four weeks to update but it can take up to eight. Hopefully once we take a peek we will be able to get everything sorted and your account back to its wonderful status.
