Anyone Notice Google's Latest Change Seems to Favor Google Books?
This could also be due to intent based on what you're searches were; however, Google has given Google properties preferential treatment in the past as well. 301 Redirect Timing Questions
Hi there As soon as your new site goes live, those old site URLs need to immediately redirect. The reason being, if crawlers crawl your old URLs and see that those pages are now 404ing, they have no indication that there is a new site URL. Here is a resource from Google. Also, do not forget to update your sitemap, upload it to Google Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Tools, note a change of address (if necessary), and also change any and all internal links. You may also want to conduct a backlink audit - reach out to websites with links you want to keep so they can change them if need to be and also to reach out to websites for links you wish to remove. Disparities between AdWords clicks and Analytics sessions
Hi Whittie, Just to confirm: by "the website itself is on a 303", do you mean that the URLs you're using in Google AdWords 303 redirect to the rest of your site? If so, that can definitely be the issue. Google AdWords tracks with URL parameters, so if those aren't being transferred to the URL that Google Analytics is tracking, things won't track correctly. Like Louis said, if this is the issue, you'll probably have other issues in GA. Is all of your traffic showing up as direct? Best, Kristina

When is OSE updated?
Yeah- - we're targeting April 30th right now. Our index is taking much longer to run than expected. We think there may be a hardware or software issues in processing that's having problems. We'll be doing maintenance so we can get back to faster indices ASAP.

New design for Googles Local Search results. No more "7 Pack"
Hi Andre! I wish I knew more about Local SEO in Germany, but your screenshot looks like the new-ish 3-Pack that Google rolled out in the US last winter to replace their Carousel results. See coverage of this here: http://searchengineland.com/google-axes-carousel-new-local-3-pack-208710 For hotels, restaurants and other hospitality/entertainment searches, Google had rolled out the Carousel in the summer of 2013, but this has been replaced by these results. Naming conventions have been kind of scattered. You'll hear terms like 3-pack, snack pack, local stack, hamburger pack. I think it's just easiest to call it a 3-pack. I'm not sure when these 3-packs rolled out in Germany, but this is likely what you are seeing. The upshot is that it has just become harder than ever to compete when Google is only awarding pack status to only 3 businesses!

Use Nonindex or Canonical on product tags of a e-commerce site
Hi Emmett So good to hear! For reference, here's what I recommended to Emmett... I would just goto the category pages creating duplicate content issues and add some text. Here's an example from an Inflow article I often reference (http://www.goinflow.com/duplicate-content-ecommerce-seo/ "Category pages on eCommerce websites typically include a title and product grid. This means that there is no unique content on these pages. The common solution to combat this is to add unique descriptions at the top of category pages (not the bottom, where content is given less weight by search engines) that describes what types are featured within the category. There is no magic number of words or characters to use, however the more robust the content is, the better chance the page will be able to maximize traffic from organic search results (due to long-tail keyword traffic). A benchmark of 100-300 words is common. It’s important to understand screen resolutions of your visitors and ensure that the product grid is not pushed below the fold on their browsers. Doing so could limit user discoverability of the product grid upon visiting the category page. Tip: Intro descriptions on category pages offer a great opportunity to build deep links to related sub-category pages, related article content that may exist on the site, and popular products that deserve attention and link equity." If you have the opportunity to do so, try that out. You're developing unique content for that page and also giving the user a bit of perspective to really "sell" them on your products. What is a good platform to sell online subscriptions?
Hi Lael, Depending on your clients budget and needs I would go for a self-build website / CMS or a Wordpress website with a highly customized WooCommerce section. Pros of Wordpress + WooCommerce Fairly cheap compared to a self-build website. Lots of extra functions that probably won’t get developed with a self-build website. Easy to manage CMS system. Very low design costs since you can buy a theme. Cons of Wordpress + WooCommerce Much harder to customize then a self-build website You’re working from a basis (the template) and your adding more functionalities. You won’t get every tiny thing the way you like it. The more plugins and customization you use the bigger the changes on conflicting plugins and security issues. You are depending on updates from third party theme and plugins authors. Pros of self-build All the possibilities to customize the website just the way you like. Cons of self-build It will cost you client a lot since (almost) every CMS function, SEO tweak, color or margin will need to be programmed. Locked in to the current provider since they are the one that knows how the website works. It’s a lot easier to switch provider with a Worpress website. This list isn’t all there is to know. I recommend you take these steps to make a final decision: Read some more about the pros and cons of Wordpress, WooCommerce and a self-build website (and other CMS systems). Map out all the functionalities that are required for your client (including any SEO needs). Check what functions you can find in Wordpress templates and plugins and divide your list in functions that are offered by the Wordpress community and functions that aren’t. Determine the investment in development with Wordpress and with a self-build website. Compare costs with the earlier found pros and cons of both options and you should be able to make a decision. Last quick tip: when you work with a subscription you will need a integration with your bank or any way to upload all the automatic payments of that week / month. Make sure you understand this process before you make an price offer to your client. In case this research takes a lot of time, try to explain your client your time investment and try to let them pay for it so you can give an accurate offer. If the job goes through you can give them any discount based on your research costs. I hope this helps!
