GWT, Editing URL Parameters for Ecommerce Features
Magento will generally canonicalize correctly by default. What I'm guessing you're seeing are category pages that have variables for faceted navigation - again, a pretty common issue in Magento. I've seen and even "fixed" this issue for past clients with no noticeable results. If you ARE having problems getting your pages into Google's index (check indexation status in Webmaster tools and look for exact product/category URLs to check) there is a plugin that will remove the variables for faceted navigation on category pages. The main downside is that someone who emials/shares a link will not share it with the filters/sorting attached. Generally I recommend leaving it alone. If you're not having indexation problems, though, it should be fine to leave alone and let Google figure it out.

Thanks so much, Gary. This is exactly the information I needed. I suspected this was the case but it occurred to me I hadn't actually ever read it anywhere.

What To Do About Yahoo Slurp Bot Bogging My Site Down?
Examining the server logs yourself probably wont help your understanding of the issue unless you know what your looking at specifically. On the Yahoo note, i have found Slurp to be really bad in the past, but no legitimate bot should be able to bring down a properly configured web server, especially an 'enterprise-level' one. I would check your .htaccess and apache settings for bad redirects (or web.conf if on windows) before considering banning the bot. Other things to check would be website code or if a bot hits a massive and horribly optimised Database Query for example, that could bring the server down. Ask IT exactly what the bot did that caused the server to go down, they should atleast be able to tell you that. If not then they need to run load tests against the website itself to try and reproduce the scenario and thus debug the issue, if indeed there is one. Tl;dr :- Normally bad config or code / queries are to blame for this kind of thing. I'd review that before blocking a bot that crawls hundreds of thousands of other sites without issue.

Launching a new website. Old inherited site cannot be saved after lifted penalty. When should we kill the old site and how?
My site got a revoke in May 2013 and took until the refresh in Oct 2014 for it to show recovery in SERPS One way around this is to use hreflang and set your main site to x-default and create a new site that targets your main language. Basically set your new domain to hreflang "EN" and you should see an instant recovery!

Adding hreflang tags - better on each page, or the site map?
Yes, your own second guess is the correct one. The hreflang in URL based, not domain base, so you have to specify it for every single URL that needs it.

Is placing an H1 tag below a slideshow a bad practice?
Hi, I certainly wouldn't put the text into an image if you can help it, the more good on page content the better! The H1 tag describes what the pages is about, if the slider isn't 100% relevant, then being above the H1 is fine. If it is relevant, then you can always have the H1 above in the code, and then style it in CSS to be below the slider. Kind Regards Jimmy

Best Way To Go About Fixing "HTML Improvements"
Great advise here, Just to add Google Search Console seems to update it's index slower than the search index so it is possible to see old errors longer than they exists until it is re-indexed. Kind Regards Jimmy

How to promote your blog content
Hi there I would check out the answer I put in this Q+A about starting a blog first. From there, looking into brand building through these paid opportunities: Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn Also look into posting on Linked with a tagged URL giving credit to the original post on site Reddit Stumbleupon BuzzFeed Outbrain Taboola That being said, ALWAYS utilize relevant social platforms and partnerships from the organic standpoint (not buying ads, just posting). To answer your first and third questions: 1.) Yes, also see if any of that content can be repurposed or updated as well. 3.) I actually do go through all relevant groups and post. Make sure you tag your URLsso you can track your performance across social platforms with your distribution. Hope this helps! Good luck!

Opt-in Form as Hidden Text - what do you think?
Hi Shahar, Thanks for the question. As the other guys have said, it's hard to predict how the search engines will react to hidden content. In this case though, I highly doubt that this form would cause a penalty. You're not hiding this content with the intent of manipulation or anything like that and if a Googler were to look at this, they'd see that you're not to hide anything bad. I hope that helps! Paddy

Reddit LInks
I would say yes, worthwhile. This would also depend on the industry and purpose though. If your purpose is to get traffic then I think it can be very worthwhile depending on your content shared and the community you're sharing it with. If it's purely for organic ranking then I would say it's mediocre. Reddit being a "social" community will see right through links purely to build rank. Also, it's worth noting that this would also have diminishing value if you're trying to build rank through links on the same domain as a tactic. Here's a Reddit post with an answer to your question about follow vs nofollow links. Use Moz tool and you'll see that front page (popular) posts are follow whereas less popular posts are nofollow. I'm not too sure what the threshold is when nofollow links turn to follow, it might be worth testing though, especially if you have a fairly active/popular Reddit account you can use. Hope this helps.

If I make a blog about what Lawyers should know about say, new adwords changes or something like that, and then get links from PPC type blogs, would that help? Negative, your best bet is to no rely on building links but useful, authentic content. Mentioning portals with great value and like minded vertical. Then once posted - mention them socially and through time - they and or other like minded sites will begin to reference you. Now, this does leave you open to the issue of reciprocal links - but algorithmically speaking - we may stimulate the 3 pro-dominant social back links - facebook, twitter, and google + ( while it lasts ;o) What if I made a blog about top movies with lawyers in them or something like that, and just got links from non lawyer sites. Once again, don't put your efforts in just link building - if it makes sense and you have done your SEO keywords analysis correctly - cater it to fit that market. Most importantly - time is the most precious commodity in a URL's value. Is that worth while? I have many lead gen type sites and built them with knowledge of knowing they would take 8+ months to begin to gain traction and attention. Hope this helps Chenzo

Do-follow or no follow?
Writing a blog post and mentioning another site as a useful resource is the very definition of when you should leave a link as do-follow. Makes no difference what the DA of the other site may be. There are really only two main reasons to no-follow a link: You are linking to untrusted content/you didn't create the link yourself - user-generated comments in a blog are a good example of this, or if you're linking to a questionable website to use it as an example of a bad practice. Links to websites with which you have a commercial relationship - e.g. links that have been paid for, or are part of a business arrangement with the other site. The third reason is if you are linking to pages that aren't useful for a general reader, like registration pages, though this aspect often gets overused. Hope that helps? Paul

Sub-domain or not???
Jimmy, this is why I am leaning towards a sub-domain. Though the previous posters seem to have very valid points about why a subfolder may be better for us... As for making it easier for the devs, that wasn't exactly what I meant... They've said they need to know which way we want to go in order to put together a plan. I think it will impact how they set certain things (I don't understand) up so will make a difference to the time scales etc - which is what our boss is asking for!

Duplicate content - "Same" profile-information
So, just continued on SEO and run into this issue I never really "fixed". Any ideas? I'm actually thinking of using a "no-follow" or exclude all these profile automatically from Google. Mostly because, they are not really adding any value. I mean, my site is a castingsite, and if the profile don't have picture, or a description or anything, then they are pretty much worthless for the site. What do you guys think?
