  • Mariam, You've got great points there! I will definitely network for E-commerce and bridging the gap. What's the quickest way to be excellent at Local? I wouldn't want to do a Local SEO project for someone unless I could see clearly how it would be profitable like I can often (though there's no way to know for sure) see with E-commerce. How do I get there fast? Thanks.

  • Thanks for getting back to me Patrick, what we are really looking for is a good platform that allows us to optimize for SEO (keywords, metadata etc etc). Desk doesn't allow much tweeting in that department, and MadCap Flare is a great information management tool, again outputs in iFrames so is not ideal for allowing Google to crawl the site. I guess what we are after is a great information management tool/website that allows both ease of information management along with the ability to optimise for SEO (I could be asking for too much!) Cheers Matt

  • Hi there I would suggest marking up every product you have. I would focus efforts onsite via Schema - I would imagine your product pages are set up on a template, so if you add the code into the template, it should automatically add markup to all of the products. I would take to your web dev team about that though. The reason I would focus on Schema - having Schema markup can potentially increase your rankings and improve your click through rates via enhanced snippets; not to mention, this markup is recognized by more than just Google, so you are marking up for multiple search engines, not just Google like you would be if you do it through just WMT. I would also suggest looking into a secure protocol for your site (https) as that is a ranking factor and you are an ecommerce website. It's important to let search engines know that you are protecting information from customers and value their privacy. It's thought by some that having a privacy policy page (among others) is considered a good trust signal to search engines - but either way, it's comforting for a user looking to make a purchase. Don't forget to do some competitor research to get an idea of opportunities others are taking advantage of. Lastly, be sure to avoid common ecommerce SEO mistakes - here's a great resource on those. And be sure to check your Pagespeed Insights - the site seems to be loading slow for me. Hope this helps! Good luck!

  • Hi Cynthia, A text-to-HTML ratio of between 15 and 70 percent is generally considered ideal. Try this tool, http://tools.seochat.com/tools/code-to-text-ratio/ It is a pretty good tool, but like Andy stated, the best bet is to focus on improving the content on your site, followed by running these pages through https://validator.w3.org/ and follow whatever recommendations possible to reduce code bloat etc... Cheers, Kevin

  • The AdX network requires a significant amount of finessing to get it running smoothly. I know you make more money from DoubleClick but running Adsense allows you to stop spinning you wheels as frequently. It's a little less intensive to manage. With DoubleClick, you are going to need to do a lot more scheduling. Your settings may be restricting other advertisers from being able to appear on your site. I would play around more with the settings until you are serving more ads.

  • The things you make me Google ... I agree - and I checked just to be sure but yes, you should be safe. (On the other hand, ExpertsExchange.com changed their domain name after it was mocked about a billion times. They now have the hyphenated version.)

  • Yes definitely don't forget canonical tags where possible. But I think those pages are being auto generated  via searches on your website or some other means. Most good Seo plugins or extensions prevent these pages from being indexed. Second to that, find the parent page and use use a wildcard block command in your robots.txt file. It should look something like this: User-agent: * Disallow: /your-inner-page/* That command will block every url variation after www.yoursite.com/your-inner-page/ from being indexed or crawled but still allow your real page url of www.yoursite.com/your-inner-page/  to be crawled and indexed.

  • Folding or merging websites should be done when possible. The fact you are on this blog querying same shows that you are properly considering the implications of the fold. Take your time to do it right. Consider all options. A poorly executed fold can have sustained detrimental impact - seen it a few times when Bosses pull the trigger and demand speed & nothing else, no room for thought allowed. I would recommend drawing a site map of both sites and then considering the impact of the re-directs for each page - mapping/planning it out. I know this is about technical and the boys have that covered but also think about brand, mail outs, informing your data base. However you connect with the customers make sure you have that covered. The customer comes first. Finally on examples - we have done several mainly eCommerce sites where the blog has been a separate URL not even a sub-domain. None have gone backwards and a couple of them popped immediately after the fold. Ultimately great outcomes for all.  So I have confidence. Just make sure you are doing what you are doing now considering the unique aspects of your website and how you will capture those aspects in the fold. Good luck.

  • The test will be to see if google will index these pages, if they will rank high enough for anything to pull traffic, and if Google sees them as a Panda problem.  I think these definition pages are risky.  Go out and look at what the dictionary sites (that rank for anything) have done on their definition pages.  There is a lot more content. ================================ On this page, Google sees a one sentence definition and one sentence that uses the word.  There is also a lot of characters that Google will not understand. http://www.freescrabbledictionary.com/dictionary/word/haboob/ I copied some of the definitions and searched for them in text on Google.  The definitions that I checked were found verbatim on over 1000 websites. The example sentences that use these pages are also not unique.  They are found on other websites. These pages are risky for another reason.
