Duplicate ecommerce sites, SEO implications & others?
Disavowing the shopify site would not do anything, as disavow is used to indicate that you do not wish to receive credit for a backlink from a domain, and that you have made sufficient effort to have any links removed. I understand the question to be more along the lines of ... "How do we leverage the social integrations of Shopify without creating duplicate content problems with our existing ecommerce site?" If you will be maintaining a mirrored database of products, etc.. the "easiest" way would be to map all of your pages on the shopify site to corresponding pages on your current ecom site, and utilize the rel=canonical link on the shopify site pointing to your current ecom site. This essentially tells Google that the page and all its value/credit/etc.. should be directed to your current ecommerce site. E.g. The page: shopifysite.com/product/a would have a canonical tag: If you find that you do not actually need the shopify pages to be accessible to use the tools to display within the social storefronts... meaning that someone clicks on the link in your pinterest store and does not need to go directly to shopify, you could consider set-up 301 redirects vs. using the canonical tag for each of the product pages, etc.. Hope this helps!

URL Question: Is there any value for ecomm sites in having a reverse "breadcrumb" in the URL?
Thanks for the quick replies (and I agree entirely). I was curious because I came across the URL and you just do not see a lot of sites doing that. The Grainger brand appears to do quite well in Google, but its probably more a result of the big brand affinity than having solid optimization in place.

What is the benefit of directory pages?
Yeah, when my predecessor did a redesign, they left off the links to that section. So it is actually an island right now with no direct link from the homepage.

Optimizing dog walking site for search phrase "dog walkers nyc"
Personally I wouldn't optimize both pages for a single keyword. As Matt says, that is a good way to look spammy. That being said, you probably want to build out your site with other options for potential clients since a single page targeting dog walkers in NYC will not do much to help your overall traffic. It will work well as a lead-generation page, however, so as I said earlier, you probably want to work on converting those folks who come to your website rather than focusing on generating enormous amounts of traffic. Also, to underline Matt's point, don't use exact match keyword targeting since that will look unnatural. I would personally look for relevant keywords that people are searching for - a great method for this can be found in this article: | http://neilpatel.com/2015/11/21/5-steps-to-building-a-successful-organic-traffic-pipeline/?utm_source=email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=email | Use this method to develop pages that follow user intent when they are looking for dog walking services and generate some pages with respect to those questions. You will improve your website's UX and increase your overall conversion potential. Best of luck moving forward! | http://neilpatel.com/2015/11/21/5-steps-to-building-a-successful-organic-traffic-pipeline/?utm_source=email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=email |

Optimizing blog domain for maximum rank/traffic potential
Thanks Robert and Erick for your quick and thoughtful answers! Robert, to clarify based on your foursquare dilemma, we are currently in situation 1) and it sounds like we ought to move to situation 4). Erick, regarding the point you make in reason #4 ("the way you have it set up right now you may not be getting the DA of your parent site anyway") -- It appears that in terms of DA, www.parent.com and blogs.parent.com are the same. However, the TF and CF for blogs.parent.com are significantly lower than www.parent.com (and lower than www.child.com), so I think your point is valid. I hear what you're saying regarding the Parent/Child relationship and the need to be careful. I think our situation is very much analogous to the P&G example, so I think we'd be fine. Thanks again to you both for the great insights!

Website Ranks and gets de indexed ??
TL;DR - This can be all or nothing. You must make account in SearchConsole and verify your site. Then you must look pages one-by-one for 90 days period for keywords. If all pages are suddenly drop in one specific date - this can be hit from algo penalty. If they're drop in different times this can be some technical issue. But this also can be due your new site. New sites often get temporary boost in SERP and then they're drop. This is caused from your linking profile and domain/site age. You need little bit patience then to get somewhere in 2x or 1x or even 0x positions in SERP. Just don't rush things with linking. Just little bit patience. That's why - this can be all or nothing. If you're hit from algo penalty then sudden drop everywhere. If you're drop due on different dates can be some technical issue. If you're mixed can be fresh domain, but also check linking profile just to be sure.

301 from old site to new one , Should I point to home page or sub category page ?
Hi, To answer your questions briefly: 1. Redirects should be made on the basis of relevancy. 301's should be made from Home Page to Home Page, Category Page to Category Page, Product Page to Product Page, and so on. You can push your page authority to your Home Page if you really want to, but you will likely see a loss in rankings for the keywords you are targeting. Better to retain that authority for your cabinet keywords and continue ranking with the new site structure while building up the other areas, products and categories. Redirecting to the Home Page will spread your current Authority thin across all aspects of your website, which will limit your rankings across the board. 2. Multiple sub domains will divide the authority of your website. If you can avoid this, do so. It is better to create multiple categories for different products on a single domain, and create relevant link profiles to each category than to create sub domains for each category or product you are providing. If needed, you can create sub domains for each category, but it is a very inefficient and problematic scenario for SEO. Set up your new site to have multiple categories in your Menu, create links to each category page, and only conduct 301 redirects to each category from a relevant category on the old website. Hope this helps - let me know if you have further questions. All the best, Rob

'?q=:new&sort=new' URL parameters help...
If Moz is crawling them it implies that somewhere in the source of your page you are linking to these url's. Try crawling your site with a tool like Screamingfrog & check which pages are generating these links. Then look in the source of the page - it should be somewhere in the code. It would already help if you would put a canonical url like http://www.example.ch/de/example/marken/brand/make-up/c/Cat_Perso_Brand_3 on the page. Dirk

Are 302s from homepage to localized versions ok?
You need definitely to check this article: https://moz.com/blog/hreflang-behaviour-insights https://moz.com/blog/open-source-library-tool-check-hreflang and fix 302 with correct hreflang annotations. Also don't forget default language. About linkbuilding. After you fix this "hreflang" then you should do both - building links for main (default) language and build links for country languages from country specific resources. Like french sites linking to french directory/pages.

How can I tell if Google considers two words to mean the same thing
Hi, In many circumstances, you can answer these questions by looking at a thesaurus if you are unsure, or any of the keyword tools (SEMRush, Keyword revealer, Adwords Keyword Planner, etc) - but for your example, a wife and a bride while related, are not the same. You couldn't replace one word with another and still have it make sense. e.g "The bride looked beautiful on her wedding day"... "The wife looked beautiful on her wedding day". Context will play a large part in your decisions when choosing keywords. -Andy

Can we disavow all spammy looking sites in OSE with a spam score of 5 or above?
@Peter basically nails it. None of these tools will be completely accurate to what Google determines is a "bad" link, so it will be very subjective. You really should use a variety of tools (even link detox is a good one) to get a list of sites linking to you. The reason being is that all these tools have very different indexes, so you'll get a more comprehensive view of your profile... however that will be a little more expensive since you would need multiple subscriptions. Like Peter said, you'd then want to download all the links into excel, dedupe, and review. I usually look at aHref Rank below a certain threshold and Trust Flow below a certain threshold (you need to either use a VLOOKUP or an INDEX/MATCH formula to combine the lists from all sources). After that you review those links manually, and add the "bad" ones to a disavow file. The "bad" ones are those that you would agree violates the Google Webmaster Quality Guidelines that fit into a link scheme definition. Once again, this is a subjective process so you'll really need to review the guidelines. To do this analysis to the full extent that you'd want... I don't think there are free tools that will give you any meaningful data. Remember they need to maintain bots and their own software to expand their indexes, so the free trials will be very limited data (usually with no way to export). I'll also say this is a very tedious process and depending on the size of the site I would allocate anywhere between 5 (small site) and 40 hours (larger site) to tackle this process. Buffer in a little more if this is the first run, since there will be a learning curve for the tools and it will take time to put together a professional looking report.

Online Store in trouble - What can I check?
Hey Bob, I'm sorry for your loss. I would start by taking a look at your past months traffic reports. Check your google analytics and webmaster tools/search console to see where the traffic was coming from the past 3 months pervious to this one. You are looking for traffic from keywords in organic search, but also for traffic from refers like Facebook or other social networks or sites. Compare the average of the previous 3 months to the current month to see where you are losing traffic from. In search console -> search analytics, you can turn on all the values: Clicks, Impressions, CTR, Avg. Position and then download that for each of the ways you can check: Queries, Pages, Countries, devices, search types. Get them all for the custom date ranges. Then compare the data, you should be able to see when you lost a bunch of traffic, and you may be able to see where you lost that traffic from, keyword positions you have lost, or channels that are not sending you as much traffic anymore. In Google Analytics, do the same kind of investigation to cross check with your info from search console. Pay close attention in GA to traffic sources, and time on site, bounce rate... If you lost some traffic from specific sources see how you can repair that. If your time on site went down, maybe your latests posts are not engaging, if your bounce rate is now super higher, what dod you change on the landing pages that has caused that... If you can identify where the loss in traffic came from by using the data from these 2 tools, you maybe able to identify why you lost that traffic. Example if you lost search position for your best keywords, go fix that. If you lost traffic from lack of engagement from specific social channel, go fix that or find a new social channel. Lastly, if you happened to take part in some link building in a certain time frame and lost traffic then, fix that. Hope that helps. Hit me up if you need any help.

How do you optimise for multiple keywords?
You may want to consider approaching this optimization from a topical perspective, rather that trying to rank for multiple exact-match keywords. If you haven't, I strongly recommend reading through Cyrus Shepard's "Keywords to Concepts" to get a sense of how that works.

How to promote a local SEO/Web design company via a blog (mainly blogging) and social media?
Hey Bob, Okay, I won't tell you to sell but remember, you're a business person, and there's nothing wrong with selling a service that's genuinely of high quality. You can be proud of what you have to sell if you know it's really going to help your customers! But, a blog that just plugs your services isn't likely to be of much interest to read, so I'm with you on that, for sure! I have a couple of thoughts on this: First, let me show you something. One of my favorite bloggers in the Local SEO space is a fellow named Phil Rozek. He has become a favorite of mine because of the regularity with which he covers very important industry topics. He's thorough, generous and dedicated to sharing what he knows. And, though his blog isn't updated daily, it's updated frequently enough for me to find it worthwhile to check it out every few days in case there's something new there. Now, with that background in mind, check out this recent post of his governing a pain point all Local SEOs and local business owners are experiencing right now surrounding Google based reviews: http://www.localvisibilitysystem.com/2015/11/18/asking-customers-for-google-reviews-in-the-new-google-plus-what-are-your-options/ I recommend that you read through the post, actively evaluating it for friendliness, generosity and authority. I think you'll come away with the feeling that this is a fellow who not only knows what he's talking about, but that he understands the needs of his readership and is sharing everything he can think of to help them. Now, there's one other thing I want you to notice as you read through that post. It's this statement: "I’ll probably have to update my battle-tested instructions for the 4th or 5th time since 2011, at which point you can order a slick one-page PDF that makes a frustrating process simple as possible for customers." So, there's a little bit of a potential sale going on in the post, but it is totally inoffensive, in my view, because Phil's blog is about 99% free tutorials and about 1% mentioning that you might want to invest in something he's offering. Given the way he is continuously demonstrating his authority, letting you know he's going to make something you can buy feels more like doing you a favor rather than pitching a hard sell, doesn't it? Buying something Phil has created could save an agency or company a lot of sweat and time. So, I suggest you thumb through Phil's blog over the past year or so and see how he's demonstrating a spirit of giving while also positioning himself as someone any local business owner would be very fortunate to consult with. Imagine if you could do that for your own business. My other thought is that you have a special opportunity if you are dedicated to focusing only on Boise as your market. In addition to penning those Phil-type tutorial posts you'll be looking at, above, your blog can become a showcase of your participation within your local business community. There will be opportunities you can either latch onto or create from scratch to put you in one-on-one contact with local business owners. Think workshops, conferences, seminars, classes at Park & Rec or senior centers, visiting high schools or community colleges, church group events, etc. If you have business knowledge to share to help your neighbors market what they do, then showcasing your participation in events on your blog will be simultaneously marketing what you do. Event by event, you will be building Boise-based blog content as you are also getting your name out there in the business community as a resource for your services. You'll be giving Google a reason to pull up your posts in Boise-based-or-related searches while also giving the plumber you built a site for a reason to tell his friend the dentist about what you did for him. So, these are the 2 things I'm thinking of off the top of my head, and I hope that you'll get lots more feedback from the community.

New Domain, Subdomain or Subfolder
Use a subfolder URL's like http://americanbank.com/ Only purchase new domains to protect company's name do not do it to rank and pressure during geo-targeting ( like you, for instance, you may in some cases THIS IS NOT ONE that I know of need a Russian IP and TLD to rank in Russia) So if you do not need to rank outside the United States just by the .net .org .com 's) Using a subfolder will increase the domain and page authority as opposed to using the some domain that will be treated somewhat like a new domain by Google. There are advantages and disadvantages to each however if you want to rank you want to use subfolders primarily if you want to separate your site into different branches, and maybe some of them are for landing pages and some are private for content that is sensitive in nature want to use a subdomain. An example of how much more power you can get out of the site by using a subfolder versus subdomain John Doherty an extraordinary SEO did this to hot pads here's a large photo below https://twitter.com/dohertyjf/status/563871687247003649 http://i.imgur.com/K2oi8J8.png http://i.imgur.com/K5aoxWX.png I am sure you can find similar cases using this http://topsy.com/trackback?url=http%3A%2F%2Ftwitter.com%2Fdohertyjf%2Fstatus%2F563871687247003649 should not redrect me to americanbank.com/business (unless for very good reason) It appears you may be keyword stuffing your URLs. Maybe not intentionally I am not blaming you of anything but be careful Of the word business, it's not needed that many times. Keywords that are bold in text
Small on-page changes have the greatest opportunity to be helpful when you compete for a keyword with very little competition. However, as the level of competition increases other factors become so much more important that tweaking text adornments becomes meaningless. This is logical because in very competitive SERPs, searchers are more concerned with content quality, reputation of the company, and other factors of visitor satisfaction, than what's in italics on the page. I don't go through my pages bolding my keywords because I think that it looks distracting to the visitor. However, I do bold in-content link text to call attention to it. Doing that lets the visitor know that I have more information about those topics on other pages of my website. It does lift visitor engagement with those links. That increases my ad revenue and may lift my rankings because of the deeper visitor engagement. One of my employees thinks that it looks "cartoony" and I kind of agree, but I still like the look because I am proud of the content that the visitor will find after clicking the links.

Massive drop in keywordword with no change
Couple things I noticed... 1st - Is the business name "Properties For Sale Mallorca" or is that the keyword you're trying for? It looks like it's on dozens of pages on your site, which isn't ideal. If that's a target keyword, then it should be focused down to one page to make sure you're not confusing Googlebot. That could be diluting your ranking potential. 2nd - Some of the wording on your website seems a little wonky... "Not just your Estate Agents Mallorca, but property finder for Mallorca, search today on our vast database." To me that is an indication that your site may be over-optimized. I would check to make sure the site content is natural and not keyword stuffed, since that could be contributing to your ranking problems. What else have you done on the site (either onsite or offsite)?
