  • Thanks Gary, thanks for that i will have a look into the serps and perhaps try to match them up to a similiar style to that of http://broomeaccommodation.com.au  as currently this site has the highest ranking our of all sites in our group, which i think can be attributed to this particular keyword ranking. i just purchased Broomewa.com which is ranked 3rd for the Kewyword 'Broome' so hopefully if i link that to the site it might help with the ranking. I could ask you guys a million differen questions right now but i wont keep you. Really appreciate the help and feedback cheers Bodie

  • What I'm about to add is more philisophical than hard data oriented. Don't be afraid to link out to relevant pages. Yes, you will lose some "juice", but you gain goodwill and "link karma" See, I tolld you it was philisophical Seriously though, if there is a natural fit for a link out, I'd include it. Feel free to throw this advice out the nearest window if you are in a tightly competitive space. then hoard all the link juice you can.

  • Love the suggestion to create an H2 and put some content around the dated version. This would make the most sense considering the intent is the same whether looking for our product or product 2012. Merci. Chris

  • You think the catalog duplicate content hurt the top terms on different pages? I can't see how I would replace the manufacturer's description on a half million items/pages. Do you?

  • To answer part 2, if your CSS knowledge is advanced or at least really good, there aren't any design limitations. There are several themes designed for specifically for customization (weaver, blankslate) .  Add to that a couple cool plugins (jShortcodes) and you've got total control of the look.

  • Try making it www.gpscity.com. Your sans www URL redirects to the www version, so include the www and see if that helps.

  • depends on the site, and you should only do it to websites your actively involved with. keep it to a minimal level even there.

  • Thanks for the reply. Well, it's more on the siloing side of things that I'm wondering, it's just I noticed on a Bruce Clay article that he says scuplting and siloing are pretty much the same thing with different names... is that not the case? I understand what to do with siloing (well, I sort of understand it) and I understand why to do it, or at least I understand the reasons given that I've read, but it's cloudy at best. My question really relates to siloing through themes. I can see how it would be beneficial but only if what I've read is correct... and I don't know that it is. In terms of what have I read, I just Googled "Siloing" and read a bunch of articles on the first couple of pages. Also, I'm doing the SEMPO Advanced SEO course (which FYI doesn't seem that advanced so far, it should be called the SEMPO Intermediate SEO course really, I was hoping to learn some stuff and this siloing is the first thing I've come across in it that I didn't already know), anyway... the course recommends siloing if you have any content that is not indexable, or not easily indexable (Javascript, Flash, etc...). I gather there really is no definitive answer as to whether it's something that should be done?

  • I agree mostly with those above stating dont build a new web site. Just to be different though - another option is a local sub domain. e.g. chicago.yourwebsite.com. This has advantages such as keyword in the domain name, it receives some link juice from the root domain and depending on your keywords you could get your root domain and sub domain in the same search results. That said I have actually advised against this in the past as a sub folder on the root domain still has more chance of ranking well than the sub domain for lots of reasons I wont go into now.

  • The general advice is for we to be as much specific as possible. So won't it be confusing a blog about cooking and computer mixed ?

  • Nope the meta tag http-equiv won't be usefull. If your page has definitely moved to portal.ufam.edu.br, you should clearly implement a 301 redirection to it, and not use the HTTP-EQUIV meta tag (which is not interpreted by search engines). With a 301 redirection, you will tell to search engines to reassign the linkjuice of any backlink pointing to www.ufam.edu.br to the new portal.ufam.edu.br URL. I recommend you reading this articles: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/url-rewrites-and-301-redirects-how-does-it-all-work http://www.seomoz.org/blog/301-redirect-or-relcanonical-which-one-should-you-use J.

  • I had problems getting redirects for URLs with spaces in them working correctly on my own site, and ended up using the Redirection plugin as well, and it's worked like a charm. The other thing I like about this plugin is the ability to see 404 errors and to set up redirects straight from that 404 list. If someone has linked to you and accidentally did a typo in the URL somewhere, or a comma got included in the hyperlink, you can see it in the 404 list and fix it right there.
