We recently moved from HootSuite to http://dlvr.it/ because it offers us control over more details.

There is a good post here in seomoz about exactly this issue with DMOZ - in recent times due to the sheer size of DMOZ itself, it really doesn't get crawled that well in the more niche or local sections.

I don't know what the rest of that passage says, but I don't see in that excerpt how the author says they should be separate. All he is saying is what a blog is meant to accomplish. It can still be a part of your site, hosted on your domain, without being fully and completely integrated with all of the pages. It can look a little different, have a different feel about it, etc, but still be run within the parameters of your website.

After researching a little more. I have found that there is duplicate content.  there is some informational content that is controlled by a third party site.  It is good useful information, but i have found it in multiple place when searching the content. how much does this type of information hurt our site ranking?  If it didn't exist on our site, would that make any difference?

We did some experiments: One website was #1 for certain keyword for one location. Then we created different website for for same industry in different locality. We linked from main website to new website and surprisingly for same keyword the new website did show up on the first page even though it is more difficult locality to grow in. What I'm trying to say if there is new domain perhaps it won't be bad idea to put a link to new website from Main site. Of course it is up to you.

There are many sites that use those premium themes. I use Thesis myself, in part because it had features that WP itself didn't (easy way to adjust drop-down nav menus for one). I've also used Genesis with one of their templates. If you're in a specific niche, buying a theme can reduce the amount of time you spend customizing the site because others have already added in the features you need. Michael Gray (graywolf) and Rae Hoffman-Dolan (sugarrae) both use Thesis and have detailed reviews and tutorials on their sites. Copyblogger runs his site on Genesis, and I believe he has detailed reviews there as well.
