Evaluating Competition of a Keyword
I know that this is an old thread, but I must say that it's EXACTLY what I was looking for!!! I too have been puzzled by the Competitiveness scores produced by different tools (Wordtracker, MOZ etc). Many of the keywords I've researched in my particular field (refurbished laptops and computers) show Low Competition in these tools, but when I perform a regular search on Google, the first two pages are often populated by big name brands (Amazon, Bestbuy, NewEgg,Walmart, Sears, Overstock etc.)... which I assume would be difficult to rank above. The interesting thing here is that these big brand pages don't often score high on backlinks, In-Anchor-and-Title or other Competitiveness indicators, but yet, they rank high on the SERPs. I'm definitely a newbie at this, but this article puts the missing pieces together for me. THANKS!

Invisible Long Tail Keywords
I agree with you on both fronts. I never target any specific long tails, but I always build content to rank for long tails. The way to do this is with quality content with a large word count. I never write the content with any long tails in mind, but I know that with quality link building I will naturally rank for some long tails. One of my sites gets thousands of visits from hundreds of keywords. I might get 5-10 visits a month from each phrase. It would have been silly to plan for any of these keywords.

Duplicate content
If the articles are in your own directory then I'd edit them and add a link to your homepage and a few other pages too. Then, take your easy solution and write new ones for your website. DD

My Domain Name - short vs relevant
Thank you for your quick responses. I'm not going to purchase other domains such as xyzwebdesign.com as I'm only going to be SEOing one domain, in particular it will be xyz.ca, I do however own xyz.com and xyz.net and will 301 redirect those to the .ca. Because I'm a company in Canada I figure I should optimize my .ca, and make that my main domain and not my .com.

"Too Many On-Page Links" Issue
Marcus and Alan offered some very good advice. I've visited your website before and had a good user experience. I'd only add two suggestions. The Itineraries Tab could be a one-click to the Itineraries landing page. It is easy to locate individual names in the Left Nav and main events/conferences on the page. Get Google Page Speed for Firefox. Love the wealth of information and fixes it offers. I like to copy and paste the page results into Notepad. You can see scores for each issue--helps prioritize what to fix first. HTH

Duplicate content and tags
On the tags and category pages, you should have a rel=noindex, follow tags. That would ensure that crawlers (seomoz custom crawl or Googlebot) dont have duplicate content issues. This was a problem with wordpress blogs as well, which has been handled nicely now.
