  • As the others suggested, there are too many factors involved. The major factors are the size of your site and it's navigation. Sometimes a site will offer a calendar that provides 3 years of dates. If the navigation is not set up properly a crawler can get lost in the calendar. Every day on a calendar can offer daily view, weekly view, monthly view, birthdays, etc. Calendar issues are just one example of how a crawler can get "stuck" on a website.

  • Any redirect causes an estimated 1 - 10% loss of link juice. If all your links use the non www version, then from a pure SEO link value perspective you should redirect the www version to the non www version of your URL. If you are on good terms with the sites who are providing those links, you could also ask them to update their links to your new structure. It's a decision you will need to make. Your htaccess code seems ok. Once again, that is not my area of expertise. I created the code I used with the Redirect app in cPanel and have copied it.

  • Sorry for the delay, Ryan. I didn't see this. I don't use a service - otherwise I would let you know for sure. I actually have a VA who does it for me.

  • As usual, EGOL is right. At most, check your links once a month when Linkscape updates. Even that is a bit much but if you are actively working on building links then you probably are too curious to wait longer.

  • The best free link building is, and always will be, great content. Let's assume we both start SEO sites tomorrow. You spend a week submitting your site to 100 different free directories, adding your link to various asian blog comments who allow followed comments, etc. At the end of the week you have 150 new links which you know wont ever really be seen or used. Meanwhile, I take the time to write the best article ever seen on the topic of "SEO 2011 - Guide to Panda and Google updates". The article is published on my site, then I visit 25 SEO sites, make a topical reply to a relevant Q&A, forum post or blog article leaving a link to the article which is often nofollowed. I also tweet the link to a few SEO-related accounts. If the article I wrote is truly helpful, many people will +1 / Like / Tweet the page and link to it. In the end I would gladly take a dozen authentic links earned from real people who generally appreciate the content over the 150 links from free directories and linking services. Those links are crap, you know they are crap, Google knows they are crap and are actively working to improve their system. Time spent improving your site for the best user experience is always time well spent. Write ONE article that is the best ever written on a topic, and let it do the link building for you.

  • Hi Keri, It's the site of a regional newspaper, so the audience is certainly mixed. I don't see any other suitable model than using cookies. Nobody here who implemented a metered model before? Thanks for your reply, Keri. have a good day. Jan

  • Ensure there are no re-writes active that may forward traffic from /fred/ to /fred-review/ and you should be good.

  • Your mix of HTML and JS should be fine. Please confirm by using the test I suggested above on a page. With respect to your text navigation links, it really depends on how you position them to users. How many brands of rackets do you offer? If you only have three brands, then I would prefer three lines of full text, "Wilson tennis rackets", etc. The header of "Tennis Rackets" would seem unnecessary to me. If you offered a dozen links, then I can understand your position a bit more. Another tip to keep in mind is Google will use the anchor text from the first link discovered on the page with respect to link weight and anchor text association. Google crawls a page's HTML from the top down. For that reason I present my HTML in the following order: body, sidebar, navigation, footer. With HTML5 Google can better differentiate page sections but I would still arrange the code in this manner until I had confirmation that content was given priority in this regard.

  • It's been about a year since my post and they have changed the page.  Now, if you want to see trust symbols you must go to individual sites. Look near "buy buttons" and in highly visible parts of the page such as upper right.

  • Keep in mind that PageRank is based soly on the backlinks pointing to your site. Having a "nice site" won't directly influence PageRank in any way. Also, PageRank is only 1 of many Google ranking factors...I recommend that you not pay too much attention to it.

  • You should definitely bring your blog over to your own domain for all of the reasons you described already. Something like www.domainname.com/blog would be pretty ideal. This white board friday you should watch as well. It's really relevant to your question http://www.seomoz.org/blog/mixing-viral-content-with-business-content-whiteboard-friday
