  • Hey there, I have to agree with Marc on this one. Cutting corners with link building is never a great move. As a rule of thumb  - the easier a link is to get the less it is worth.

  • Thanks Marc and Ryan, appreciate the feedback and I share your thoughts. Personally I would go for a dot com anyday too (but that takes deep pockets for a keyphrase dot com), but from an SEO perspective .net or hyphen seems to stack up equally so far..it's Rands recent comments about the Panda update and hyphenated domains that has me wondering what could be happening with hyphens now. Has anyone done any tests to see if hyphens are spammy? and how many hyphens it takes to be classified as spammy?

  • Page Authority. PA is real to us. We can see it. It is updated and we understand more specifically how it is calculated. Page Rank is used by Google, but they only update it for us a few times a year. Also the actual formula is secret which leaves us guessing. There are a few PR vs PA discussions which are quite good but bottom line is I don't use PR for anything.

  • Have a look at the resources below and let me know if you need more help. Responsive web design is recommended by Google but it does not apply to all websites. You have to take into consideration things like user intent, navigation, content. There is a lot of debate about it here on Seomoz and I would proceed carefully by reading some of the resources below. One thing I would advice though is to keep the robots blocked until you figure out what you want. In my opinion, Bryson Meunier has written quite a lot about the subject on several respected blogs in the industry. http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/search/label/mobile http://www.brysonmeunier.com/ http://www.seomoz.org/blog/seo-of-responsive-web-design http://www.seomoz.org/q/mobile-seo-tips-and-best-practices Hope it helps!

  • Thanks I will give that a try.But it seems silly it is designed like this, very user unfriendly to have to jump thru so many hoops to get a plain list of the target urls that I want.

  • Like Mr. Barth says, 301 redirects occur on the server level, before a page is even served up to the end user, and so presenting an alternate isn't possible this way. You could use the meta refresh tag, or another server side technology like php or asp to accomplish this. Do this and the link juice is gone, though. To address that issue, you should use a rel canonical tag to tell robots that the buyers site is the canonical version of your domain, and assign all value there. EDIT: To be clear, I'm recommending you both forward the request AND use rel canonical.

  • 100% agree with this. Depending on the size of the site I would also try to make sure you don't have any dupe content anywhere and that you have unique meta tags across pages (again, depends on size of site). As you never know where traffic may come from and what surprises are in store. Then super focus on the sections of the site you feel are valuable, conquer and repeat.

  • Perhaps its some SEO testing. "Let's create a new page, use a robot txt file to block the bot, and then spam a 100k new links to page." "That's crazy enough that it just might work."

  • This is definitely something that can be pulled off. The answer above correctly states that contacting the right person is going to give you the most chance of making this happen, as well as making it as easy as possible for them to do it. However, a few things that could improve your chances: Pick up the phone, if you can speak to the right person this is better than email. If email, make sure your email is super polite and massages their ego. If emailing the webmaster, talk about how you like their site and mention something specific (a new article that you read recently and why it was interesting), no need for this to be long, but show you like and use their site and are not just emailing for a link never to return. If speaking with the article writer, talk about some of their other articles etc. State the benefits of making this link active... why should they do it? I presume your site is of value (thus the mention) so say that, say how you believe this article is still of value and how a link to your site would provide their users with a better experience etc.

  • Hey thanks. is there some tool or feature in google webmaster account that shows us info about the caching frequency? also, we only set up 301's for 400 of the 8,000 urls. only those 400 hand external links to them. it would be a massive project to redirect all those other 7,600 urls. do we need to do that?
