  • The index.html file name offers no value for SEO nor users. I recommend not using it and directing users to a "clean" URL (eg seomoz.org/ instead of seomoz.org/index.html). As long as you properly set this up and consistently link to the same URL there are not any duplicate content issues. If you wish to go one step further you can add the canonical tag to your page.

  • You can see that from the W3schools article I linked above: "Even if works in all browsers, writing instead is more future proof." HTML worked with the idea that certain tags could be opened but did not need to be closed such as the and tags. The XHTML standard requires all tags be closed. As I understand the idea, it's just a better means of presenting that every tag is closed. Functionally there is currently no difference BUT it can lead to different behaviors in various browsers if you use invalid code.

  • Agreed.  These sites are big on referrals.  If you invite a friend and they make a purchase you receive a kick-back.  Your friend also receives a discount on their first purchase on some of these, etc. This promotes passing on the message and is a huge marketing tool.

  • Why would SeoMoz not wish to appear on Page 1 of serps as such a position a) would bring new subscribers and b) demonstrate they are not summed up by the idiom; Those who can,do; those who can't, teach In the past I have met a number of SEO companies who make a play on the 'we're not about our results, we're about your results' Ahem, perhaps you can't match the SEO skills of your competitors? Anyway back to the topic, I am interested in your understanding of how ranking importance is distributed, that each keyword in a title tag is given its share along the lines of; If  the title is one word like "SEO" then that word is given 100 points. If the title is "Search Engine Optimization" then each term would be given about 33 points. As many have suggested the earlier the keyword appears in the tag, the more importance it received and therefore the share for this title might be 45,35,20? Lets look at an example of a title tag for a eCommerce site Toshiba 3D LCD TVs | Free Delivery | TH32TT | TH42TT | Tellys.com As free delivery often help conversions (though of course title tags are not often read by humans) there is worthwhile search volume. Also the two most popular model numbers also receive search volume. (please ignore that this may cause competition with product pages and assume that this is a one page site and/or there will be no duplication or internal conflict). In this case just how much negative effect are these extra keywords inficting? Would it be better to strip back to Toshiba 3D LCD TVS   ??? Thanks

  • After much research and implementing ton of added scripts on my apache server to track it - the bots did effect the shutdown. However, for this not to happen to you or if you ever have a problem of that nature this is how I resolved it. http://www.m3rlin.ws/?p=17 It is an excellent article about how to implement the script to restart immediately once all available threads for apache are exhausted and your apache crashes. The script basically check apache server status every 5 min and in an event that it crashed - it will automatically restart it and send you an email notification. I say pretty good deal for risking to be offline only 5 min if anything  major happens. Just as well I am also running a cron job every morning at 1am to restart apache. Please note that you need to have knowledge of SSH commands and manipulations in order for this to happen. And OMG I am talking like a geek... All the best to you...

  • Essentially Google only really gives any real weight to the first link on the page anyway, so by the time you get down there, it will be of miniscule benefit. I would suggest you concentrate on a few good anchor links in the body of the page and not worry about the footer for anything SEO related

  • My understanding of nofollow is that you really shouldn't be using it for links to other pages on your site.  There's no benefit to it.  You used to be able to sculpt the flow of pagerank, but they changed how it worked awhile ago to make it so it's not beneficial to do this to your own links.  For example, suppose page A has 6 units of pagerank to pass, and links out to the following pages: page B Page C Page D Normally, each of the pages would get 2 units of pagerank.  Suppose you nofollow the link to page D.  What will happen is that page B and page C will continue to get 2 units of pagerank, and page D will get none.  It didn't increase the pagerank passed to pages B and C. So, nofollowing a link will prevent pagerank from getting passed to that page, but won't increase the pagerank passed to the other linked pages from that page, so I wouldn't do it.

  • I just dusted off my memory banks (the hardware ones in my brain) and if I am not mistaken (don't know if it still there) there were a paragraph in the Google terms of use that stated that explicit content has to be at least 3 clicks away from the front-page. But on the other hand I just did a quick search on porn and none of them live up to that condition so it doesn't seem like that rule is being enforced if it was ever there. It is interesting but I must admit I have never had a reason to research the subject since I have never had a client that had explicit content.

  • Yes - I believe your blog would look less-biased if it linked out to other useful websites.  Some people will say you should "nofollow" those external links so you don't "bleed" your page rank, but I don't think that is beneficial in today's SEO. That said - try to avoid to any overtly commercial sites that might run competitor advertisements through programs like Adsense.  It's a bad habit for blogs to just link to the first site they find through Google searches.  It's always better to link to a known brand like NY Times than a low-quality eHow.com type site. If you have other pages other than your homepage, I would link to the most relevant piece of content you have based on the the context.  You don't want to just link to your homepage in each blogpost.  The more specific and descriptive you are, the better.

  • ASP is dynamic. HTML is simply formatting of content. ASP streams HTML on output to the browser. You can do much much much more with ASP than with flat up HTML.

  • I would aim to have the page name with the full phrase (for example www.example.com/office-recycling-bins.html) and also have the full phrase in the title tags however in the navigation I would go for Office Bins, Kitchen Bins, Outdoor Bins etc.The user is aware that site is about recycling so doesn't need to be told on each navigation label.
