  • Yes. Bing is ... um.. kind of "picky" about what they index. If you browse through the Bing webmaster tools forums, you can lean a lot about how they choose which pages to keep in their index. Here are a few highlights: #1 Bing will remove a site from it's index if it finds too many erors in your site map (404 errors, etc...) #2 Bing will remove a page from it's index if it doesn't rank high enough. Bing will actually remove a page from it's index if there are (quote) "700 million pages that rank higher then you" . Apparently the thought behind this, is that Bing doesn't want to use space to save a site that isn't ranking yet anyway...  Once you build some more links to your page try resubmitting your sitemap. #3 Bing is always "testing". Bing wil actually move you around the serps to test how people react to you. Bing will mesure the bounce rate of your page, how long people stay on your page, and the general way that people react to your page.  If your page doens't pass the "Bing tests" then they might remove you from their index. So in summery, Bing is trying to keep their serps unique by making it harder to get included in them. They are testing user interaction and they make decisions based on those tests. I know you can try to re-submit your sitemap to Bing after you've made some changes... Best Of Luck.

  • Wayne gave a good answer. From a great deal of research I have found that a 301 redirect loses some of the link juice to avoid people abusing the power of building many domains and then forwarding them all to one main domain. In my opinion this is well worth it still especially when you don't have to go through the work to have established the link portfolio. One thing to look out for though is making sure that the link portfolio really is as good as you think it is. Look into the backlinks and see if they are from reputable sources which will stay there or if thy are just a mass of profile backlinks and comment spam which could just make it seem like they have a lot of good links or even get those links removed later on. At the very least the 301 redirect will help get the robots to your site to increase crawl frequency which i find to be great when you want your pages to be indexed and updated quickly on google.

  • Yes it will definitely help as it will give some credibility - especially with newbies and businesses not very online savvy. Don't expect to learn and remember a lot from those tests....most of the learning will come from actual experience aka trial-and-error, online tutorials/blogs, forums & your peers.

I'll point you at this - http://www.css-resources.com/list-a-websites-external-links-alphabetically-using-xpath-and-php.html - but don't ask me how to do it ;)" Maybe ask Richard here - http://www.seomoz.org/q/list-of-links-pointing-out-of-my-site - and see if he found a way

  • Google won't index image-embedded text on a webpage (currently only .pdf documents) If you want a little more insurance, which you won't really need, use your handy robot.txt or rel="canonical" As usual, keep your eyes forward: "While search engines may not use OCR for indexing the content of web pages now, that doesn’t mean that they might not in the future, and there are some indications that the search engines are developing a much greater proficiency in the use of optical character recognition." Here's that article, including some great references. Good luck.

  • I've seen it done before for the first time about two weeks ago. I checked up on the rankings of the website, which was in a local (read: no competition) web development niche. The website was not ranking for anything. Take that as you will, it's certainly not a case study. Personally I wouldn't do it. What value does it bring your visitors? Any at all? If not, it's probably not a good idea, as per the advice Matt Cutts and the Google quality guidelines state: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=35769 Take a step back and think about it. Doesn't that seem excessively spammy?

  • The difference between positions 2 and 8 appear to be combined Organic/Google Places results. Perhaps for stability you should work on your Google Places listing. Google will combine the organic and places results if they see good optimisation of both. There's a good article on that here - http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-to-research-local-citations-after-google-removed-them-from-places
