Best domain to promote a french hotel in english
Thank you Jane, you give me the opportunity to explain better. I am targeting the english language, more than the single country, so If I have to pick up one I guess .com would be better for that. Yes I also want to target french market (it is a french hotel) and I have a french version of the site under the domain/fr directory. I guess it's remarkably weird to have the french version like this: hotelsinavignone.fr/fr So i think I am going to go with a less exact KW match but .com extension. myhotelsinavignone.com (english site) myhotelsinavignone.com/fr (french site) Thank you all very much. How do I get rel='canonical' to eliminate the trailing slash on my home page??
Having a canonical link pointing to that same url as in the address bar has no affect as far as search engines are concern, the reason moz.com gives for doing this is that if some one scrapes your site, the canonical will point back to the original. The whole idea of canonical tags and 301's is to do with requests, you want the all requests showing the same content to appear the same page to the search engine. With normal pages a slash means a different request that without, and to fix it you need to create a 301 that requests again to the correct url. in the process you have lost a bit of link juice. but when requesting the home page with or without the "/", the request is the same. there is no need to fix it. press F12 in your browser and test it yourself using the network tab, you can see that entering the url with or without the "/" on the homepage results in the same request. Whether letting an old category just 404 out is OK
Hi Bob, Just to extend on Jane's point and answer your question - if you 301 redirected every single page on your site, it would overtime slow down your website and if a lot of those pages don't have strong authority then it might be detected and potentially harm your sites rankings. A link to a quora post below provides additional reasons. http://www.quora.com/Why-should-one-avoid-overusing-301-redirects

Moz Analaytics: What does this error mean? analyze_page_issues.crawl_error.name
Thanks again for the update. It is great to have the Crawl Test Tool; I use it quite often. Both immediately before and after the odd Moz notice; all was well on the same pages from readings with the Crawl Test Tool. Best on you on-going development. We appreciate your hard work.

How to Google Product Reviews?
Hi Oliver, "Ratings in Google Product Search consist of an aggregate ratings score with snippets of customer reviews from third party sites and from Google Checkout which are based on your store name and the registered domain." These ratings from Google come from _"various sources" _including: Bizrate(Shopzilla), Pricegrabber, Epinions, Yahoo, Review Centre, Viewpoints, Google Checkout Reviews, Reseller Ratings, Trustpilot, RateItAll.com, eKomi, and more. To read more the above is taken from here PS Google Checkout is no longer a place where reviews can be acquired as it is being cut. Hope this Helps!

How do I know for sure if my site has been slapped?
If you feel like you have done everything within your power to try and get the links removed, but there's just no way, then you should disavow the URL or domain. You should attempt to reach the owners of the domain 2-3 times before giving up. During my link removals, there have been a decent number of webmasters that finally responded on my 2nd or 3rd attempt. As for disavowing URL or domain, if the entire domain is something you'd never want a link from, disavow the entire domain. Even if you only have ONE link from the entire site. Still, disavow the domain. Only disavow the URL if you think the site in general is good quality but you happen to be on 1 particular spammy page for some reason.

Ranking Oddities
AJ, I took a look at your backlink profile and it's pretty clear what the problem is. You basically have nothing but spam backlinks (I will PM you examples). It looks like there was a big influx of links around September 2013. Did you pay someone to do SEO about 6 months ago? Your site doesn't look bad, but it's got some instances of over-optimization (again, I'll PM you examples). You should definitely verify Google Webmaster Tools, if you haven't already, and check to see if you have a manual action against you from Google. After looking at your backlink profile, I would be surprised if you don't have one. However, if you don't, it may be coming soon. If you don't know how to do the backlink cleanup and reconsideration request yourself, it would be a good idea to hire someone with experience.

Secondary Domain Outranking Master Website
Hi Thomas, As Vahe said, searching from outside of the US is bringing up the .org site first, so I agree that this is probably a geolocation issue. The .org has many times more backlinks than the US site. It's essentially a glitch, but one Google has probably done with the best of intentions, meaning to show US content to a US audience. Is the US site geotargeted to the United States in Webmaster Tools? Unless the site has some rankings that you are very concerned not to lose, try removing that geotargeting for now and monitor results for about four weeks.

Duplicate Content - Blog Rewriting
Hi guys, have a client in a similar situation and working through best option for them...would appreciate any comments or feedback... Current Status - client has two websites each targeting different countries: .co.nz and .com.au With the exception of a few products that are offered separately between NZ and AU, the sites are the same. In essence duplicate content. This is due to current platform limitations (the way their web company has built the site it is same site showing in each region on separate domains with option to change products between regions using inventory an integrated inventory tool). The great news is they are currently rebuilding their websites onto a new platform with two unique versions of the site…which will be great for ongoing SEO - ie we can really drill into creating separate sets of page, product, template content and meta data etc. They also have a magazine running on Word Press Blog using sub-domains associated with the regional root domain. E.g. magazine.domain.co.nz and magazine.domainname.com.au Again, with a few exceptions, this is also duplicated for both countries…ie sub domains assigned to the same site. Again duplicate content. Question: The magazine being built on Word Press has to date been geared at offering an “FAQ” type engagement with visitors....visitors can submit questions via module which are then answered in Word Press blog posts. There are also links from main site menu away to the magazine...so not ideal for conversion. Client wants to bring this FAQ type feature back to the two main sites and can now do so during new site rebuilds. There is also some SEO juice in the magazine as in essence it is a large Word Press blog. I am trying to work through what would be the best option for transferring all of the FAQ answers/articles (content) from magazine FAQs to the two new main sites...so over time the two new main sites obtain that SEO strength. Option 1 Leave magazine as it is so that main sites continue to get benefits of referral traffic to main sites and sales as result of the referrals. Also retains the links from magazine to main site (although links are from a sub-domain of the same domain) Rewrite a brand new version of each magazine article for new NZ site Rewrite a brand new version of each magazine article for new AU site (Bearing in mind stringent Panda rules etc – mixing up titles so unique, unique content and posting etc to avoid Panda penalties) Option 2 Take down magazine site and implement 301 redirects + one new version of the articles. Move all magazine articles across to the highest performing region (NZ by far) and 301 redirect from NZ magazine to the new NZ site with corresponding articles. 301 redirects take care of the indexed pages to retain traffic and rankings for the NZ magazine articles. Rewrite a brand new version of each magazine article and add to the new AU site and 301 redirect from AU magazine articles to the new version on AU site. 301 redirects take care of any indexed AU magazine articles...but there may be some fluctuation in rankings as the content is now completely different (brand new). Could there be any issue with loss of the internal backlinks? impacts SEO strength that magazine subdomain to main site might give? Other Options? Appreciate any thoughts or comments... thanks in advance...

Thank You for such a nice and descriptive answer, you're 100% right and I did not received any manual penalty from Google. Are footer links important?
Michael, Philip is on the dot mass footer linking was an SEO trick of the past that does not benefit much in terms of an SEO boost. If its messy clean it up. Leave it ONLY if it makes sense from a user experience, and so optimize for a real human person as he would browsing the lower part of your site. Hope this helps

Yahoo Newspaper Consortium... What can my local newspaper offer me that Yahoo Ads won't?
Hello there, I did some Googling and found the following. There was a Yahoo Newspaper Consortium, but it basically disbanded and then reformed as the Local Media Consortium this past fall. http://www.poynter.org/latest-news/business-news/the-biz-blog/225463/newspapers-ad-consortium-with-yahoo-reboots/ http://www.netnewscheck.com/article/29237/consortium-reboots-beyond-papers-yahoo The members of this group - do not include any of the newspapers (or the parent companies) you mention http://www.localmediaconsortium.com/consortium-members/ As of the end of February, this group is now joining forces with Google vs Yahoo http://www.adexchanger.com/publishers/private-exchange-deal-with-google-just-a-first-step-for-reconstituted-local-media-consortium/ As far as the ad deal you are being offered, I would only assume that it might be easier to work with the newspapers as it may save you a step in having to deal with only 1 ad system vs 2. I would ask to speak with current clients of the newspapers and see how they use the systems, get a demo etc. Good luck!

Moving from a .org to a .com
Hi there, If you have the potential to acquire movieguide.com, that's a great domain name. That said, you're right that this is a crazy competitive space and some of the competitors are giants like IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes! One option is to buy the .com and redirect it to the .org. If you engage in offline advertising (magazines, on the subway, etc.), you could use the .com because it does look more professional. You could have the .org continue to be the resolving website, after the .com is 301 redirected. We are always hesitant to recommend redirection (especially of an entire domain) if you don't have to due to the risk of lost rankings. The rankings are usually not too hard to get back, but it's never a sure thing.

Need a keyword tool for the whole company
Awesome - this would be great. While quite as user friendly as the Moz KW tool, it's a great option - thanks for clearing this up. Makes sense that it would be free, but a lot of things that make sense are not so. BTW I talked to someone at Moz who said that they are working on a solution for enterprise-use of their tools -- multiple sign-ons or dashboards or such. Stay tuned, they said. Thanks Vahe and EEE3
