  • I'm not in the tool, so I'll leave that to those in the know. However, to clarify you can still do free basic listings. So maybe that's what they're doing, and that's what you're seeing. I'm referring to whether I should pay for listings so that I can get the specialized attention I need for 70 locations that are giving me grief. So it's within that frame that we are weighing whether they carry enough influence to be worth it.

  • Sorry for my late respons. We have decided to go over on https for the whole website that was the best thing to do. The results are good and Google is also happy because there is just one kind of a url we are using within the whole website. We prefer the short url version and that worktout good. Greetings Jacco

  • Hey cjkimber, That's actually a common dilemma. Many sites prefer to "meta no-index" your tag pages, to remove those tags from consideration in ranking. That way your primary page (and all others) will rank higher than the tags. The easy way to do that is to download the Yoast SEO plugin for Wordpress. In the plugin, you can noindex the content by clicking: SEO (sidebar) > Title & Metas (sidebar) > Taxonomies (tab) > Tags > {Select "noindex, follow"} There are a lot of other tools that will help you out w/ other parts of your SEO in the plugin. Does that answer your question? -- Andrew

  • Hi Tim, I think you should do the migration all at once. Make sure you 301 every page or at least the most important ones. This video might help you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1lVPrYoBkA Magento is great platform, but if not well implement it became very slow. If you 301 your old pages for a much slower page or a page with very different content you might have problems. As long you make sure you content is aligned and your mageto site is fast you'll be fine.

  • Do you think the previous owner of the domain butterfly.com could be affecting things? From a search on archive.org it appears it used to be a golf game console website. Obviously, the company was not named Butterfly. So do you think the previous history of this domain could be affecting the current rankings?

  • Hi Mark, One of the verticals we work with is the legal industry (lots of lawyer related sites). In our experience, we have gotten good results with both structures, sites with pages just one level down from the home page and others that have pages 2 or 3 levels down. In both instances the pages in question were ranking quite well and a lot of times at the top of the search results. In Matt Cutt's own words: I would recommend the first-order things to pay attention to are 1) making great content that will attract links in the first place, and 2) choosing a site architecture that makes your site usable/crawlable for humans and search engines alike.

  • Hello Ahalliday, First... apology for the delay. Thankyou very much for the answer you have put here... it makes sense for sure. If I may put an extension to the problem... what about at the architecture level. I do not want to cause indexation bloat... so I only want the right pages indexed and not all of them... so I want to put a policy in place for rel=nofollow OR exclusion with Robots.txt and I also need to clarify some rel=cannonical stuff. Attached is an image of the architecture I have in mind. Let me know what you think about it. Regards, Talha edit?usp=sharing

  • I suggest you should go with Jane's suggestion. create folders. Subdomains are actually seen as different sites. Will not carry the domain authority of the parent site.

  • Use a cannonical tag. Its the best option if you want to keep both the pages or if you want to keep just one page 301 redirect the page which you don't want to keep to the page you want to keep

  • Keri is completely correct. Citation building is a Local SEO technique, and virtual businesses are not local. Good question!

  • The two responses above are good - we advise not doing redirects unless they are truly necessary due to some people's experience with ranking problems that are hard to fix (i.e. redirection shouldn't be carried out "just because", for aesthetic purposes that aren't important, etc.). However, if the redirection is necessary and it is done properly (check out those resources TrentonM11 linked to) you should be able to complete it with very little problem, as Anirban says.

  • Automated means that my my web developers has an algorithm in places that calculates changes in al those statistical fields on an ongoing basis so users always have new up to date data. From the URL I included you can on top bar change neighborhood etc and the statistics will change. Great insight for user but since writing "median price per year", "$ Volume of active listings" etc are same across all pages I wonder how I should expect search engines to treat it. Any articles or experience to back up ideas highly appreciated.

  • Hi Mark, Best practice is to create a number of different descriptions - maybe 5-10 of them, just to vary things up. However, you cannot prevent duplication even if you create a different description for each entity, because of the way certain data sources populate the data of other websites. So, duplication, to some degree, is baked into the citation building process and, thus, is unlikely to have a serious, negative effect. So, go ahead and write a handful of different descriptions to use, but don't fret over this area too much, because you can't avoid a certain level of duplication.

  • Hi Bob, There are a few others, the main one being Wordtracker (which comes with very good reviews). Wordtracker has a good reputation, but it's worth noting that some smaller tools do not have access to a large dataset to pull their numbers from, so you're not necessarily getting a true picture. Although Google's numbers are almost certainly a bit wonky (deliberately), at least you are getting them from the source and can have confidence in comparing volume. By that, I mean that if the tool says 10,000 people per month in the US search for [hypnosis] and 2,000 search for [hynotherapy] (these are totally made up numbers), then you can be somewhat confident that [hynotherapy] is 1/5th as popular as [hypnosis], even though you can't rely on the 10,000 / 2,000 figures. Cheers, Jane
