  • They don't have a specific algorithm for it, but best practice is to keep them as short as possible.  When you build your slugs ask yourself if a searcher could guess what this page is about based on the shorter slug.  If they probably couldn't, then you would probably want add as little as possible so they could guess it. The title should effectively communicate it, and the slug should reflect it.  Also, remember that the rules for titles is even shorter with one of Google's recent updates with larger titles in the SERPs.

  • Hi Andy, It looks like you need to do some Web Analytics due diligence to identify what caused that spike in conversions. Here is a list of things you can do to help identify the root cause: - Setup Google Analytics Custom Alerts GA's custom alerts do a great job of alerting us of unusual spikes / valleys from our traffic. I would suggest setting up custom alerts around your KPIs and business objectives. If you Google about GAs custom alerts, many of the recommended initial alerts are a great place to begin finding some to setup for your website. - Use GA to find the differences in traffic and conversions Although your conversions and traffic are relatively low (we may want to gather more data before concluding that there was a statistical difference in the conversion data), we could begin to analyze the traffic through understanding the sources it came from, specific campaigns that converted (make sure to be tagging your links accordingly!), qty of products ordered, maybe a new referral source contributed to the new conversions, ect. - Do some keyword analysis Did your new customers come from a specific source on a related topic? Did specific terms send new traffic to your sales page that converted well that day? In order to find insights into changes, we need to make sure that we're properly tracking and measuring our traffic and acquisition strategies. Many times when there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer, it's because we haven't set ourselves up for success when measuring our campaigns and goals.

  • Nope, you can just have a regular sitemap with all of the urls. Then on the actual pages, declare the localities via the hreflang tag. Overall, you should declare the location associations on either the pages, the sitemap, or ideally, both. The more direction you can give crawlers, the easier it would be to understand.

  • That's interesting as all of my pages see the opposite. Straight text gets minimal results for me.

  • Thanks for your feedback. Moving everything to one site would be quite a big undertaking. How sure are you that this would make a significant difference how Google would treat the site?

  • Buzzsumo might be able to help with that too. How helpful it turns out to be will depend on how specific your search topic is. Buzzsumo will allow you to enter in a search topic or domain, filter by publication type (article, infographic, guest post and so on), and then sort by the number of twitter shares. Because you're looking to identify top brand/athlete/celebrity shares, and because they tend to have a boat-load of followers, they're likely going to rise to the top after your sort. Eyeball the results and and see if any pop out.

  • Thanks for the question! For the most part, all rank-tracking tools are pretty much the same. Most tools out there incorporate two things: 1.) Choosing a search engine and country and 2.) Adding a parameter to show non-personalized results. the rankings that will be delivered will then include (only) those two factors. However, the actual SERP that any person actually sees will be personalized and reflect his search history, the device he is using at the moment, whether he's logged into his Google account, his Google+ activity, his physical location (especially when searching on mobile devices), and a lot more that we probably don't even know. So, it's important to know that any "ranking" that a person sees via any tool is always going to be an estimation. There are more than 200 ranking factors (as best as we can know) and no tool can incorporate all of them to present the exact same picture that Google sees -- chiefly because we don't know all of those factors and we don't know everything about that factors that we do know. So, the actual ranking positions that a person sees will often not line up exactly with what a tool shows. Tools pretty much give you a good guess as to a ranking, but it's still just a guess. What I would recommend: People should care more about the overall trend than a specific ranking. If the tools show that rankings are slowly but surely increasing over time, then you're on the right track. It's a marathon, not a race.

  • I just answered this question where you asked it on another thread. In brief, sharing content does not mean copying and pasting the content, it means sharing a link or otherwise telling people about the source of the content.

  • I would in future tend to trust sources closer to being official rather than someone on a forum. Remove the extra * so its just Disallow: /*? You can find more info here - https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/156449 You can also test your robots in your webmaster tools so don't forget to give that a go if in doubt. Hope that helps.
