  • With lack of information, you should certainly ask for references, portfolio of work, etc. Have them provide you with a basic outline of what they recommend and how they are going to move forward, and get a second opinion. In the end of the day, find someone you trust and you believe you can rely on them, from word of mouth, reputation, and references. It's like going to a doctor, you don't know the information yourself, but you know you have someone you can rely on due to their expertise. I would also recommend getting a basic knowledge of SEO - you can read the beginners guide here on Moz. There are lots of great resources to get an elementary understanding so you'll be more educated and capable of guiding the SEO company you work with. If all else fails, take some of their recommendations and ask here on the forum or on similar sites what the community thinks about the recommendations and advice you've received. Good luck!

  • It definitely shouldn't be harmful but is most likely unnecessary. This is the code to verify your website in Google Webmaster Tools. It looks like it's verified for two different accounts. You should only need to verify on one and then you can add users from the dashboard inside webmaster tools, instead of having multiple verification codes.

  • Hi, It is worth remembering that Google may change the way your page title is shown in search results whenever they want, so it can be really hard to control them. You can read more here: http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2342232/Why-Google-Changes-Your-Titles-in-Search-Results  In terms of how to write good page titles, there are a couple of things to bear in mind: Write them with the user in mind - what would be most appealing to someone? Include keywords but don't include too many so that the title doesn't read well Keep them short and to the point (see link below) Don't duplicate them across pages, make sure they're all unique Moz wrote the following guide which you may find helpful. There is also a tool so that you can preview titles: http://moz.com/learn/seo/title-tag Cheers. Paddy

  • What environment is the site built in? Normally, you build the microdata markup into the site template, this way no hard-coding of individual microdata is needed. If you're on WordPress, there are plugins for that.

  • If you're looking to redirect old URLs, sending them to the nearest equivalent page on your site makes sense and would be a good idea. However, my question would be - Do you actually need to redirect?  If the part of your website you're looking to remove is getting little to no traffic as it is, you might be better off letting the pages 404. 404 errors are a natural part of your website - something that Google is happy to admit. If some URLs on your site 404, this fact alone does not hurt you or count against you in Google’s search results. The reason why I suggest this is that with each redirect you add to your .htaccess file, you add extra code that needs to be 100% correct and you make your file a little bit bigger.  The bigger it is, the longer it takes to process and the longer it takes to process, the longer it will take your site to load.  Now, for 400+ URLs we're talking small amounts here and likely nothing that will affect your site speed to a degree that it will negatively affect your site - but it can be a long process to put in place and can cause problems if you're inexperienced with redirecting. I usually follow 2 criteria when asking if I should redirect an old URL. Is it getting traffic from people visiting or entering my site?  Check this with your analytics, although it looks as though the answer for you will be no. Does the old URL contain any external backlinks that you would like to preserve.  If it does, a 301 redirect will help pass on the link equity. If the answer to both of these questions is "no", I'm happy to let the URL 404.  Over time, it will stop being crawled, reducing any errors you see in Webmaster Tools. Hope this helps - certainly no harm in redirecting if done correctly (and you can do it in one big go - personal experience with rebranding some big global sites shows this to not be a problem).  However, I would ask if you really need to - you're unlikely to harm your site either by not redirecting.

  • Hi there, Thanks for reaching out! My name is Erin, and I'm on the Moz Help Team. You can choose Google as a search engine and we'll show you those rankings, but as Keri stated we're only able to show search volume for Bing. All of our searches run as if you're doing a search in an incognito or private browsing window. This means that if you choose google.com to check a keyword, we'll show you global, non-biased results. Your location won't come into play at all. If you are interested in local keywords, you can try added a geo modifier to your keyword. So for example, instead of tracking "pizza" you could track "pizza Seattle." I hope this helps! Cheers, Erin

  • Looks to me like someone added some kind of SEO tracker to the footer at some point that no one else was aware of. Have you tried installing Ghostery and seeing if it shows up as a tracker? I agree with the other commenter that it is almost certainly not an SEO issue, and that you should be safe removing it.

  • Judging from your original comment, it sounds like you know what you are doing. Just give it some time. Sometimes, I find that a FAQ or something similar will rank over a more Category based page because despite being less targeted, the FAQ is full of content and the category page is quite thin in comparison. Here is what I would do: Update the Loft Conversions Essex page to include more content. Better content. Build a few external links to that page to strengthen the authority. Give it some time.

  • Hi here is how http://www.webconfs.com/how-to-redirect-a-webpage.php http://moz.com/learn/seo/redirection To determine rather not you should redirect to www. or no-www use http://moz.com/researchtools/ose to figure out which has more back links pointing to it then 301 redirect to that. In terms of if one is better than the other there is really not a difference however if they are both equal meeting having no back links or identical. You might want to go with www. simply because having the subdomain allows you to do some more things like add Google page speed other miscellaneous things in the future. But really go with the one with the most links if there are no links then choose the one you want going to Google webmaster tools to make sure you add both examples.com www.example.com to Google webmaster tools than pick the same URL you chose to redirect to as your main URL Google will then only send Google bot out looking for that URL Here https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/44231?hl=en Hope this helps, Tom

  • Thanks Tom, I'll try to implement this. The link for http://psgrep.com/ isn't working? If I implement the solution for cross domain tracking above, will my adwords data flow through? Right now I'm getting no behaviour data even though my adwords and analytics are linked up or is there additional work I will need to do that is available on the link that isn't working? Thanks!

  • Removing them through GWMT won't do you much good, I believe. Google will re-crawl your site and re-index them. Do the URLs contain specific query parameters? If so, you can tell Google to ignore URLs with specific queries and that should prevent them from being indexed. GWMT > Crawl > URL Parameters

  • You mention they're driving traffic, but it is highly doubtful that any of that traffic will convert to leads. Have you been tracking the lead form on that page? I would be a little concerned about receiving a lot of links from web cam directories, or links about surfing, to a marketing company website. It's just too unrelated. However, as long as these only represent a small part of your overall backlink profile (think single digit percentages) you will probably be OK.

  • Hi Cole, Yeah well that change in script is in close proximity to what you would normally do with adding event tracking to real interactions on a page and in this case you 'fake' an interaction after 15 or X seconds. I still wouldn't prefer using it this way though as you don't know for sure that the user is actually in the browser window or at all looking at the page, so I would at least check for that with some additional JS but in the end you'll get the same result.

  • You can't set clientsite.com as the canonical home page, because it's not, FPD. The very definition of "canonical" means it is the actual URL that displays the page content. A URL cannot be canonical if it redirects, is no-indexed, etc. In your case, using clientsite.com as the canonical would badly damage your ranking capability, because you'd essentially be telling the search engines to rank a page that has no content and essentially doesn't even exist. Clientsite.com/store is the canonical homepage for your site, and should be set as such. The only way to change this would be to use a system that doesn't require the redirecting of the domain to the subdirectory. (And if you're sticking with the current system, make certain that the redirect being used is a 301, not a 302.) Hope that helps? Paul

  • Hi Tom, I went ahead and made the purchase, in my opinion not expensive but with domains you know... it's worth whatever you are willing to pay for it. thanks again for your help and guidance to check out those great links!

  • This was a deal breaker for me as well. I'm still going to trial Moz in terms of identifying other potential benefits, but I came here to evaluate competitive intelligence tools. I'm mostly concerned right now at learning everything I can about at least 9 competitors, so this won't do for me. It'd be nice to have everything in one dashboard or package - the campaign intelligence you have here and competitor intelligence.
