MozCon?
There won't be a MozCon. It's always going to be in Seattle. What can happen is if MozCation comes to you. You can nominate your city for Mozcation.

What happened to SEO Moz directoy site?
The page is gone, but the service will be back. I'm quoting from fellow employee Ruth Burr below: We've given the "keys" to our directories list/database to Ian Lurie, who is collaborating with Mackenzie Fogelson and Distilled to put together a more robust and scalable solution for directories. With everything else we've got going on, we decided that curating the directories list was beyond the time/resources we have to devote to it. I know this gang of trusted providers will do a great job with it! Other than redirecting the page and handing over the existing list, Moz won't be actively involved with the project."

What's going on with Moz Post Comments?
I agree that this method makes conversations harder to follow. There's been a huge uproar on Facebook lately about this as they've done this with the "reply to comments" function and it's screwing up conversations and making them impossible to follow. I'm not sure if it's as big of a problem here but it's definitely the same issue.

How about this new Q&A Design?
I couldn't agree more with the link color. I brought this up in another thread and dude told me I'd get used to it. ...no, I don't think I will honestly. I hate the light blue on white theme. Can't understand why that seems like a good idea anyway. It's even lighter than the header color.... Why?

The New Moz
Well alrighty here we are. This forum is hurting my eyes and I miss the old one. I've yet to explore otherwise and obviously am not one of the lucky moz-beta testers but when I arrived to this forum I was forced to borrow a phrase from the lovable Jar Jar Binks. EEE GADS

3 quick questions?
Alan, you nailed it right on the head. what 50% meant is Google is changing and as Google changes it is picking up on what is a good link in what is a bad link unfortunately links that is deemed those old links As bad. So in my eyes you just went through a terrible penalty it seems. However you view the links that got you in trouble as helping you I don't agree with you. It was just a matter of time before Google found out. I would take that 50% and turnaround as hurting you because let's look at the facts that's exactly what it did. Where I'm getting at is do you really want to go through another round with Google they will not be as forgiving the 2nd time most of the time from what I have seen if people actually try to scam them again and they are caught they're delisted permanently. Am not trying to scare you I'm trying to tell you what I've actually seen happen to people. Why not focus on real company stuff and content until your least out of the hole with Google before you start comparing yourself with the competition. Believe me if they are doing this it's only a matter of time. Google sending out thousands of these things a day there are manual penalty that means a person has to view it. And the amount of websites is so vast that of course people will get away with it for while but times are changing and I would get with the side that is doing the right thing and stay with it. I hope I have been of help, Tom

cant remove old google results !
You could also try changing the 404 Not found status code to 410 Gone status code - The requested resource is no longer available at the server - a permanent condition, meaning the content is gone and will not be replaced, while 404 means that the content is temporary gone (404 pages will eventually be removed from the index but after some time) You can also try to make a list of all your deleted pages and disallow them from the file robots.txt. You can easily download the list from the Webmasters Tools, crawl errors report - you will receive an alert after Google finds your 404 pages Hope this helps!

Your Google+ Link on SEOmoz Profile is possibly broken
Hi Tim, The /about may work I didn't see any of those, the 20 or so that I saw with /posts were all not working. Not sure if it's from the Moz or Google side but it looked as though it was an error in the way Moz created the link if it had /posts on the end.

Link Clean up?
There is no such thing as a full clean up You try your best and prove to Google that you have tried your best by keeping detailed notes that you show them when you do a reconsideration request S

SEO Conferences - Which to start with!???
So I'm completely bias as I'm a Mozzer and one of the Mozzers who runs MozCon. With that said, MozCon is definitely my favorite conference. Last year was both the first year I helped run MozCon and the first year I attended it. I knew all the pieces, and I was blown away by the caliber of the content and the speakers. The topic runs a little intermediate advanced, especially if the topic is primarily SEO-focused, and the speakers themselves are incredibly smart and true experts in their topics. Most conferences to me are really hit or miss, but MozCon was one where I felt that I learned at every session. (I've been in the industry for 6 years.) The single session, one room format with keynote-style talks really suites my learning style and my need for community (live-tweeter right here). (And Seattle is awesome!!) My second favorite one is SearchFest PDX. Their speaker quality is superb. Though you have to pick between sessions. I found the community pretty great here too. And the year I went, it was right by the food trucks which I can't stay away from in PDX. I felt the sessions were really tailored by topic so you could chose to go on the track you knew and learn something or skip around to learn something new. If you want to talk to Matt Cutts or get all fannish around him, SMX is the conference to go to. As except for the "celebs" of search or a specific keynote, it's panels, speakers get less time to talk, which I go back and forth how much I like that. I find panels, due to the sheer numbers of speakers a conference organizer must find to talk on a similar topic, can sometimes be a large hit or miss between speakers. And they can also crash quickly if the moderators aren't on top of it. SES has been a bit more a beginner's conference in my mind. I've found a lot more SMB and SEOs starting their careers going to these than other conferences. It's all panels with a few exceptions like SMX. Both SES and SMX accept pitches, and sometimes, you can get some rougher talks due to beginning speakers. (We ALL have to start somewhere!) I haven't been to PubCon or any of Distilled's conferences (SearchLove, LinkLove), though I've heard PubCon to be more like an SMX and SearchLove to be closer to MozCon in styles. Anyway, hope you found that useful. Feel free to ask about specifics you're considering, and really, I can answer about anything about MozCon.

Google is really NOT SAYING IN "HOW SEARCH WORKS” ?
Google is a business, correct? It's their job to server shareholders by creating value and as long as they do not break the law, what's the issue? I have always felt Google organic rankings were extremely unbiased. Sure, I would cuss at them when one of my sites were dropped--but was always happy when I leaped over one of my competitors. Anything outside of the organics, is fair game IMHO. Oh by the way, this site is run by a group of Google competitors including Microsoft.

A Lot of Duplicate Meta Descriptions
Hi Jonathon, Well yes the big meta desc text is an issue, not great for google but even worse for user experience in term of a nice targeted description texts that show up in the serps and entice searchers to click on your site rather than the others. So you want a nice clear call to action text that says in 156 characters or less why users should check out your site (or more specifically this particular category/page of your site). Have a look at this serp preview tool, it is really useful: http://www.seomofo.com/snippet-optimizer.html As to the technical implementation, it sounds like you have a custom template in use and the description text is being put into the meta desc field also. It is an easy fix for you or your developer to switch that over to using the category meta desc field from the magento admin instead. Hope that helps.

Is Back Link Building still Good Practice
I'm in a similar positiand if not worse link wise. I have been trying the "link bait article" method. Been creating rich content with videos, images and long form quality content and it seems to be working. It's early days yet but traffic is rising. As yet conversions are not up and no links but it has only been 2-3 weeks since our first good articles went live and they are ranking well and driving traffic. The thing I noticed is that if I add a video to the content and submit video site map to google I get it on page 2-3 in about 20 mins! Epic speed at climbinthump the SERP's.

Wrong page in serps
Hi Nico, before i answer your question, its probably worth noting that if you manipulate your sitemap priorties too much they will be ignored - and should this "over optimisation" penalty occur you will be hit. it also sounds like you are trying to manipulate "link juice" within the site, usually doing this is a bad idea - my advice is think of the user and not the search engine, even if it worked and you got visitors to your site if they can't find their way around you are in trouble. your question Rel canonical only effects duplicate content between your own pages and other sites - implement it if you want it wont have much effect. I think you've got rel=alternative mixed up, it is used to point to things like RSS feeds or copies for PDFs, not previous pages / content.

Auto Renewal Subscription
When I signed up for an SEOmoz account I received several notices during the first month that explained the charges. Here is an excerpt from one such email: "Also, we wanted to let you know that you have one week left in your free trial, and when it expires, you will be charged $99/month. We hope you've enjoyed your membership, but if you wish to cancel, you can do so on your account settings page." I'm guessing your notices are in a spam filter. Best, Christopher

Why some sites doesn't get ranked in Google but in Bing and Yahoo
Google uses a different algorithm to calculate rankings than Bing and Yahoo (Yahoo is now powered by Bing so both will always give the same results). While the many factors that both Bing and Google take into account might be similar they are not identical. What might get you hit with a Google penalty (and see your site wiped off the SERP map in Google) might have no effect in Bing. Here's a handy infographic from pentonmarketingservices.com on the differences between the two. Of course, the differences between the two are always changing as Google constantly brings out new updates: Bing v Google article
