  • We're running TV, radio, and print ads for them. The content for the TV and print ads come from the parent company, and we customize them to fit the local market. We also handle the local SEO for them and run their citations through Moz Local. They do PPC, but it's ran by the parent company. They're also pretty good about getting reviews for Google+ and other review sites.

  • You are right on. It can be very, very expensive. Don't get me wrong, I love Wistia. I'm a Wistia customer myself. I just don't think it's right for every client/video/goal. Use YouTube. Use YouTube analytics to find out what websites embedded your video. Perform outreach to those websites, asking for a link crediting you as the resource. Make sure the YouTube video is embedded on your website and the actual video description links to your website, to verify proof of ownership.

  • Hi Rachel, I guess this might be worth a blog post since you didn't find resources I'm going to try and tackle your question in steps,.. 1) What do people recommend to do with old, outdated videos on sites like YouTube and Vimeo My personal opinion, but if these videos are getting views, try to direct them to the new videos using annotations and such. Unless that product video is harmful (example: it was flagged as toxic waste ;)), then why take it down if it's still getting traffic? Okay, a better example would be that they're so outdated and look embarrassing to your brand, but even then, you can cover up the entire video with an annotation to visit the new product video... 2) They show up in search, but some mention outdated products Which search? Google regular search / video / youtube / vimeo? If it's regular Google search, you can change that by de-optimizing the listing on Youtube and get a new video ranking.. 3) However, is it best practice to remove everything older and outdated from Youtube, etc. or is it better to have these in your library (quantity over quality) There are no rules here, every case is different. 4) We also started Google Plus after Youtube, so we now have two YouTubes (one empty one attached to our new G+ and one that's been established with a lot of videos - new and old) For simplicity, it might be better to have one account. ** Good suggestion / idea from Microdesign, but I don't think updating videos is possible on Youtube (https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/58101?hl=en)

  • Ditch the .ca - makes me just as nervous as the .us here in the States.  Even though .biz and .info and .net get some traction - the country specific ones seem to be harder to rank for - and quite honestly very confusing. Better off being unique or finding an expired .com domain with some Alexa rank.

  • Hi Rox, Good for you for going straight to Google with this. That was just what I was going to suggest after reading your initial post but before I saw your follow-up. And thanks for generously share what you've learned. This may be of future help to other community members:)

  • Theoretically it might be better from an SEO to have English on the root. If there's already something established on the root, it could be the right choice. Google sees subdomains as brand new domains, so you're starting from scratch. If you have a lot of other languages that already visit the site, though, you msystem turn off more people than you attract.

  • That is a tricky one. I would definitely have pages up for each at the start, but with different content, even if Im forced to invest further to make it more unique. Once the traffic for that brand name dwindles down, I would redirect it to the latest name. Depending on the competition level, if it's not too hard, I would just stick with 1 page but make sure to mention the old name on the body (and even on the meta details if possible) It can rank just as well. These are all assumptions. It's really a tricky position that needs to be analysed further.

  • I understand linking to the page only if it makes sense.  What are your thoughts on the location of the link? should they be placed at the top left/right or just place them in the footer. The major differentiation between the two examples of branding I gave were one brand is promoting its sub-brand with a 1 way link they are not linking to one another (example : Brand A is only linking to Brand B & Brand C while Brand B&C do not link to Brand A).  The other example is all of the brands are interchangeably linking to one another (example : Brand A is linking to B&C while B&C also Link to Brand A)

  • Devon, If relevance between two subdomains is low, the value of links pointing from one of them to another will be low, as well--even though they share the same root domain. If they're as different as you say, it's probably best to tough it out on a new domain. Nonetheless, it shouldn't be inconceivable that you could come up with some overlapping concept between something on the two sites about which you could write. Such an article/page of content/blurb added to the old domain and linking to the new domain could give the new site a little boost in visibility/traffic/awareness.

  • In general, it is best to do all of the changes (the domain, branding, and URL work) all on a development site (that is blocking search engines) and then release the new site only after everything is complete. If you space it out piecemeal over too long of a time, it will look very messy both to Google and your website visitors. Releasing a new, properly-migrated website all at once is the quickest way to mitigate any "SEO" damage and return to your prior traffic and ranking levels quickly. However, it'd be impossible for me or anyone to be more specific without doing a deep dive into your site. However, there are some general best practices for site migrations. For reference on all of these, I'd take a look at what Moz did when migrating from seomoz.org to moz.com. Moz has a webinar and associated blog post that goes through all of the technical details and results. Aleyda Solis also has a good migration checklist with links to more resources here. I hope that helps -- good luck!

  • I especially like #1. I didn't even think to do specific remarketing like that to one individual or group. Do you have to get a certain number of visitors in your remarketing list before you can start serving ads or can you just have that handful of visitors? We were planning on using Facebook custom audiences like you mentioned but I didn't know you could do that with Twitter as well, that's good to know. Thanks SamuelScott. To go one step further than this we have been looking at physically mailing something to these decision makers along with serving them ads. Not just post cards or mailers with similar branding but also something that's a little out of the box and fun.

  • Thanks Lesley, I'm not sure that this is what I was looking for though. It looks more like a way to markup what brand particular products are, rather than an organisational brand?

  • Ive added your idea of links inside table to body content so thanks for that. Those social buttons are using the addthis service, just styled against the theme of the site. But I see what you mean, im thinking of dropping it altogether and using the sharedcount.com API in a format similar to mashable. It aggregates all social shares into one number and cuts down the button clutter. Thanks for your help on this, I think the 'true' aim for me is to make my landing pages better than any other I find - I think if I achieve this ill be heading in the right direction. Ill give it 3 months and share where im at in another post.
