Why is Google+ so confusing?
Hi Matthew It was actually because I can use Hootsuite now for Google+ that I noticed it was updating the page rather than my profile. Its a bit of a pain we can live with but would love it all to merge sooner rather than later. Our Google+ Local still also gets updated from our old Google places account which seems wrong!! Obviously we all need to keep our eye on Google+ as it will have a big impact on all of us moving forward. Cheers James

Twitter and SEO
I agree in this particular case the SEO value of their Twitter activity may not be all that significant, but there's no doubt that search engines are increasingly using social signals in their rankings algorithms. I like to say that social media has 'democratized' the web in a way. In the past, acquiring an in-bound link was like acquiring a 'vote' of sorts for your site. Today, you don't need to have a website in order to 'vote'. When someone follows/likes/+1s you, it's a vote of sorts. I'm not suggesting that individual follows or likes are the equivalent of a good inbound link. Search engines want to rank websites that they feel are both relevant to the user's search query, and websites that they feel are authoritative. There has been much discussion about search engines looking at things like your 'retweet ratio' or your 'follower to following' ratio. If those types of ratios are 'favourable' that sends a signal to a search engine that you are 'authoritative'.

Google+. Good for all businesses?
Purple Indigo, Robert's right on most accounts. Something that you might also want to think about is the "Google Rel=author" tag. If you're going to be using any kind of blog on this site, using the "Rel=author" tag that's tied into Google+ can help you rank higher in the search results and also give your brand some identity. I know you've mentioned that you don't consider this a product that you would want to use to connect with your audience, however the push in the search rankings might be something of interest.

Myth or Fact: Social Media Dashboards Bad for SEO?
@ThompsonPaul: I'd welcome additional input...here is the scenario: We're a 2-man agency, so there really only needs to be one user for the dashboard. The goal is creating an active Facebook/Twitter presence with minimum time commitment, for 3 or 4 small clients - these are local, independently owned businesses with small budgets. My goal was is to re-purpose newsletter & blog content as pre-scheduled Facebook & Twitter updates in order to be able to "set it & forget it". These clients don't necessarily view Social as a priority - but as we are creating blog/newsletter content for them anyway, I thought it would be good practice to re-use the content on other platforms, to keep Facebook / Twitter from being completely overlooked. In terms of the degree of importance placed on analytics - I think if it could be demonstrated that Social is driving traffic to their websites, we would be able to persuade these clients to allocate more budget to social. Each of these clients does use GA.

Is Tumblr difficult to Optimize? Is Tumblr bad for SEO?
James, I agree that Posterous and Wordpress seem to index more quickly all things being equal. I haven't had the severe problems the blog poster I referenced earlier has, but if I need to get 10,000 reblogs for a Tumblr post to index at all, then I will go with another tool and then just syndicate to Tumblr and the rest. Thanks, Jon

Will we penalized for using social media contests to gain fans/followers in the future?
AirnWater, I doubt you will be penalized. You have to remember that the majority of Facebook is still closed off to Google and it's Spiders, so how would it be able to penalize your fanpage? Facebook is still far away from ever letting Google completely crawl it, so it won't be able to see your individual posts. To answer your other question about the contest overall, I would ask what is your mission statement for the contest and what are you doing? If a client simply asked you to gain fans to their Facebook page, I see no problem in doing this, but if you're trying to drive sales this is completely different. I will like a Soap page for free soap, but that doesn't mean that their content will be attractive to me. I simply wanted the free soap. You have me for free soap and not for the engagement, you have to be careful here now because fans might expect free things from you all the time. If you still want to continue a contest to increase your fan count though, I don't see why you couldn't hold one every two months. That's enough time to increase your fan count, while not being a complete saleout. To get engagement, your money might be better suited elsewhere, in this case(maybe PPC). I would also work on more fill in the blank posts on Facebook or like posts, to increase edgerank.

Need Help in Select Twitter UserName
I would just make it something that is simple and easy to remember and that people will associate with your business. I think the branding effect will be much more significant than the seo impact unless you get a great keyword.

Twitter Personas
Then it is not a twitter persona which is the act of playing a social role. In this case you are just playing a natural social role and should have no problem interacting with said designers. Anyways I looked at your twitter profile, I think it would be fine. Since you describe yourself as a Web Designer on here, you should also describe that on your twitter profile. From a professional stand point, using your personal account will put more of a face on your account when you socialize with users. I think @justinmarch would be better off than using an account like @BestWebDesignerEvar. As long as the method of approaching someone clearly outlines your objective, you should have no problem. Don't lead people to figure it out for themselves. We are all lazy and the amount of people that will research you because you did a @reply to something they said will be far less than a direct message complimenting on their design work that you took time researching.
