  • The ROI just isn't there. Not unless you stumble into a Chuck Testa video. I don't envy you, don't take this as criticism, but rather a rambling from someone who has been there. In fact, I'm interested to hear what you come up with . I tried: Linkbait Consistent content (mainly educational resources targeting 'local + kw' strings) PPC All local directories Videos Rankings, sure. No problem. However, the traffic just wasn't there to make it FUN. You know? Whatever you do, don't forget to promote your own brand and work towards non-regional clients. You're best bet is to think about offline resources and find ones you can leverage online. Most of it, it's going through competitor contacts/network, vendors, partners, distributors and lean on those contacts for content & links. Don't spend too much time on viral/linkbait, because it's expensive to create & I'm guessing these companies won't pay you for your time.. or appreciate it. The other thing we did that worked well, harvested all local blogs. From there, we identified non-direct competitor blogs and leveraged guest posting that way. It cut down on the cost of new content and earned us a few links. Not to mention, got me a couple of free lunches.

  • Hi Barret, Have you watched these two Whiteboard Friday's by SEOmoz: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUrl6p53yfo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5649gtXA4o These aren't new videos, but there is a good amount of information in the mix that you could learn from. Otherwise, a simple search on the SEOmoz Blog or Search Engine Watch will reveal an assortment of great links to read. Hope that helps!

  • Agreed the +1 button is better for your website. I am still not sure how to make a company +1 page. I have tried but it only sees my personal page. Honestly I do not like Google + I feel like we are being forced to use it because it "may" help our websites. Facebook is much easier to use in my opinion however, that is probably because I am used to Facebook I spend a lot of time on there.

  • Facebook now has this functionality built in to pages, does it not? You can also use Buffer App which is a great tool...

  • I agree with what others are saying. While there is no direct SEO benefit, there are lots of indirect benefits. As noted already it shows social proof, helps with branding, can bring you second-hand links, etc. Search and social are definitely melding, but social still needs to be social.

  • I wouldent spend $300 on that. You can find information for free just by searching Google and here at SEO moz.

  • Thanks. So the answer is no - they cannot be moved, but we can set it up that the numbers on the new page refer to the SM love counts on the old.

  • The first step would be deciding upon a single URL to represent your home page. The traditional version of your home page URL would be www.sparkstone.co.uk. If you want to use www.sparkstone.co.uk/home that can work, but you must use it 100% of the time. Even so, it is likely a percentage of users will link to the www.sparkstone.co.uk url without the /home so my first choice would be using your domain as your home page without the /home. Once you make your choice, update all internal links and any other links you control to use the same version of the URL.

  • Thanks for the reply. I thought 301 redirect might have been the best option. The industry is personal insurance and there's a lot of information out there but it's not really centralised and most are geared for pushing product/services. My aim is to provide info without making the customer feel that I'm pushing products down their throats.

  • Hi Tracy, Excellent question, and one I'm sure many people are puzzled about. Google is going to merge the Google+ Business pages and Google+ Local pages in future. I think if you will read this post, you will feel brought up to date: http://blumenthals.com/blog/2012/06/08/google-for-business-places-forums-wrapup/ They have already begun merging the pages when manually requested to do so, as you can read about here: http://blumenthals.com/blog/2012/06/19/the-g-merge-has-started-google-now-processing-manual-merge-requests/ Hope these resources make it clear to you what has happened already and what is supposed to happen in future.

  • Hey, I'm not entirely sure i understand your question, but i'll do my best to explain some of what i think you're getting at. Neither one is "better" as such, as they both apply really to different types of content. You should make your decision based upon what's appropriate for the content, rather than a perceived search benefit. If you have the rights to upload and present a TV show through your channel - then this is the most appropriate way to do this and i would recommend uploading the full episodes as shows, rather than breaking them up. You can then put the shows into a playlist, e.g. "this show, season 1". However, if you don't have the rights to the content, then breaking shows up into 15 minute segments and then creating a playlist (which people often do) is essentially a breach of copyright and can get you into trouble. If you're uploading a series of content which isn't really a TV show, but nonetheless contains "episodes" in a sense, then a playlist is a sensible way to go.

  • Hi there!! If you don't have a way to rank them, consider developing one. It could breed competition in the ranks especially if this is something you would want to do year over year. Consider the motivation that these bloggers would have for using this particular badge. If it becomes a badge of honor or recognition that could become incredibly enticing those those individuals motivated by such a thing. Other people will be motivated by a feeling of exclusivity instead. Using that exclusivity as a lever in the program can help to engaging that type of blogger. For almost all of the blogging population I would say public recognition is a motivator. Depending on the size of the group you may want to consider making it a public deal...announcement with a list sort of thing to stroke their ego. Credibility is key as well. Ensuring the program is one that actually extends and increases their credibility will make them far more likely to participate. The O'Reilly book - Building Web Reputation Systems by Farmer & Glass will go a long way to helping clarify this in much greater detail. I'd highly recommend that! For a good example check out the Power150 blogger list. Perhaps the best example there is. I also know of many conference organizers who utilize badges in their conference marketing with their speakers. SMX and BlogHer come to mind initially.
