  • There is one that i know of that looks brilliant but I haven't got round to using it yet. https://ifttt.com/ It's called 'If this, then that'.  It looks really useful.

  • Yes its very hard for me because my site is probate, so not a very happy subject, Thanks everyone some very helpful info off you all. One thing thats curious is I am seeing sites that dont have any backlinks taking over me in the rankings for example http://www.purelyprobate.co.uk/ they have a site similar to ours and they have a page rank above ours (we lost rank after getting hit by the penguin update) they have no real linkage, mind boggling when everyone states that linking is the way to go. • This makes perfect sense and also answers my question. I think your last paragraph summed it up perfectly. Thank you, Mike!

  • Well with Schema you would be telling the Search Engine a bunch of detailed information about you the site and the product. You can use many different ways.

  • Hi Travis, Yes, that's correct - no geo information in any way in the business description field. If you want to use service keywords in this field as part of your description, I would advise that you not repeat any words that have already been used in the categories. What I like to put in the business description field, where I can, is whatever the company has most bragging rights to. Things like: Voted #1 by Local Living Magazine. 100% money back guarantee. Serving our neighbors since 1935. Lifetime warranty on all our work. Or, if this client carries a certain brand or performs a popular service that was not already used in the categories, I like to focus on those keywords. For instance, a dentist's description might include: Let's build the smile of your dreams with Invisalign technology. I like to use this field to set my client apart as more popular, safer, older, better, or what have you. Note, this may not be every Local SEO's favorite use of the description tag, but I have seen it work well for my clients.

  • You've probably checked out Yelp's FAQ, Terms of Service and Content Guidelines. If you have, you've discovered the following associated problems with your question: Yelp believes the best reviews aren't solicited Yelp doesn't even want you asking for reviews Yelp admits its automated filter is imperfect They just want you to fill out your profile, provide great customer service, respond to reviews and put Yelp decals, logos and buttons to create awareness for Yelp (and your listing on Yelp). If their advice works, that's the safest approach. They know their filter is imperfect and therefore unfair but they don't want you to get impatient with them and work to have direct influence. Naturally, Yelp wants to be the arbiter of the Yelp experience. You might want to consider carefully asking for some reviews (but definitely never pay for them). Steve Gould is right that Yelp favors active Yelpers.  You might try asking people how they found out about you, and if say they came from Yelp, you know they are an active user - so intelligently ask them for a review.

  • Hi Enam, Guillaume here, one of the founders of Scoop.it. I of course concur with Nakul and would add that Scoop.it links are no-follow links which is also an important point. We're also very attentive to not letting spammers or bots use the platform (you need a legit social network account or clear captcha to create a Scoop.it account). In addition to that, you (or any users) can also flag Scoop.it pages that you feel are suspicious or present unnatural activity. If they are breaching our terms of use, we will immediately take them down. Feel free if you have any questions. Guillaume

  • Tom and Robert, thanks for your replies guys. I like the idea of looking into using Google display network to serve up my own ads for YouTube videos embedded on my  site instead of competitors ads. Not sure if this is actually possible but will be looking into.

  • Actually, there is a fair amount public from each site. Here are some of the partners that Twitter has where you can access this data (in addition to going through the API yourself) https://dev.twitter.com/programs/twitter-certified-products/products#Certified-Data-Products. Facebook also makes available ways for a person to see and show off how many likes their page has, for example (see http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/like-box/ for a plugin you can use). Here are a bunch of other things Facebook makes available through an API, either for getting data from or pushing data to Facebook.

  • I use flare and can't say there has been any significant negative impact in terms of speed.  It's a nice plugin, very clean and fresh looking, I can't fault it..

  • I think that if you can't naturally get likes and have to ask for them, then there's bigger business issues to address. But given that they can't make a value proposition as to why I should like their page, I don't expect these people to be smart marketers.

  • I have not used them, but a quick glance makes it seem like they're suggesting content from news feeds related to your subject. I imagine something you yourself could set up as well for free and a little copy/paste effort. Also, just because something showed up in Google News or on a news feed for Fox News doesn't mean it is viral content.
