Discuss the impact of growing social media presence and its relationship with other digital strategies.

  • This is the approach that I am using.  I spend all of my time creating content. It is a really really slow way to start but every bit of content that you get up starts to pull in a little traffic and after you have done that for a while it starts to build momentum. I would focus on the following types of content... -- misconceptions (these surprise people and can get shared) -- basic knowledge explained exceptionally well (if you can do this in best-on-the-web quality it can get shared widely - but slowly) -- things that everyone should know but most people don't know (how to select mountain bike tires for sand vs mud vs gravel vs pavement) -- demonstrations (how to change a mountain bike tire in 50 seconds) -- stuff that pisses people off  (how to prevent flats... focusing on rim strips, spoke ends, tire selection, tire inspection, inflation, what to avoid hitting) -- stuff that surprises...  (the number of calories required to finish an ultradistance triathlon and the amount that must be consumed on the road to keep from bonking...  on top of that there is the liquid requirement - which varies by race day air temp - very different approaches for 50 degree race day in Montreal and a 90 degree race day in Florida) It is really rare to have something go viral.  I shoot for things that are simply good content that people will share if they like it.

  • You won't have any issues with this. Most SEO's don't use the same account for webmasters and analytics as they do google+, docs or other things. Google can cope just fine with it. As tom says you can now add users within g+ brand pages and GWT, this is a good way to say these are all connected - you've also been able to do this for a while with analytics.

  • Thank you both for your responses, it appears to validate my own thoughts. I will get onto our internal development team who have taken over control of the site to see if we can remedy this. @ Boss & Arrighi thank you for the additional information on the Rel Author implementation. We spent a lot of time thinking about the merits of the two but in the end we decided to go for the brand reinforcement. However some of our other brands will be using Rel Author once their blogs are up and running.

  • Hi Sachin, Good news: Facebook Insights now offers limited data for referral traffic to your Page. To see how many visits (not unique visitors) were referred to your Page from outside Facebook, access Facebook Insights for your Page, then click on the "Reach" tab. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and you will see a list of websites that referred visits to your Page during the specified time period. This information, which also tells you how many visits came from each external website, is located under the "Visits to Your Page" graph in the "External Referrers" column. Please take a peek at your Insights, and let us know how that works for you! Cheers, Christy

  • I would also suggest make sure the links are quality and relevant. I'm seeing some links to your site from URLs like http://paloma81.blogspot.com/2011/11/dream-home-savvy-home.html and it's really not relevant or helpful to you, and likely to be removed by the blog owner as spam.

  • The Rel Author tag is used to link content created by an individual (on a blog, for instance) to  the author's personal G+ profile. Andy is correct, the author needs to specify in their G+ profile that they area contributor to the site (thereby linking back to the site where their content is) to complete the author verification process. You should not use Rel Author in conjunction with Google Places. Hope this helps!

  • Look at the checklist google made here. http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1708844 Have you put a link to your g+ page? Because I couldn't find any link to it.

  • Your bio says you're with a brothel. While it may be legal in your area of Nevada, if the Google+ account had much relating to this, that could be a reason why it was suspended. Could you tell us a little more about the account?

  • If you were "GOOGLE" would you have 3rd party factors as part of your ranking algo ? I wouldn't. I wouldn't want my business success to depend on 3rd party performance in this case "facebook" What happens to google algo, if all of a sudden one day there is no facebook. ? or facebook changes the way they do business, who follows who here? Just sayin ! cheers,

  • This might only work if the sites offer something of value. I know that's kind of a vague answer, but a lot of people used this strategy with a set-it-and-forget-it plan. For the social meda sites, if you're not going to be active then don't bother. Try offering coupons, trials, user generated content, top x# lists, ect.

  • Basically, you're SOL (siht out of luck), as we said in the Navy.  There was a good discussion on this topic here some months ago here.

  • Thank you Tom.  That is good to know.  Good to know there won't be negative SEO and yes, from a PR standpoint I will look into deleting some of the accounts.  Certain are less active just b/c they are more obscure and we'd rather focus on, like you said, those that convert.  Thank you for your reply.

  • On Wordpress there is a page created for each author on the blog.  It looks something like this. http://hilounge.com/author/hilounge/ The author archive or page needs to have a link to the authors google plus Profile.

  • Thanks, Sung Moon. You're right. I need to check my competitors links. Many of them have a ton more links than I do and I know for a fact that at least one of them has been paying a service to get them links for years. I do not want to follow in those footsteps for all the obvious reasons.

  • The web search portion of Graph Search is powered by Bing, so if you do well in Bing you should do well on FB too. Generally, optimizing for Bing is pretty much the same as optimizing for Google, just work on building more links.

  • So sorry! One more question, please, Takeshi. My husband just reminded me that we purchased a second domain name in October and set up a redirect or forwarding to our site domain. He kept the page authority for the main URL. Our site is www.fateyes.com and the additional URL is www.fateyeswebdesign.com and that points to fateyes.com.
