Discuss the impact of growing social media presence and its relationship with other digital strategies.

  • I haven't seen much in the way of data on this. As @ReferralCandy said, I believe that at least some of the comments are indexed and they may count as page content, but I don't think the association with Facebook gives you any particular boost. More likely, the gain would be from crossing your blog community with the Facebook community and possibly increasing your engagement and secondary social signals. I have mixed feelings about the Facebook commenting platform, but most of that's around ownership, not SEO. Seems like some fairly large sites are using it.

  • Thanks a lot for your comprehensive answer. It's a totally custom site so I will have to hire a developer to do the job.

  • Very important update! I was 100 percent wrong in the first part of my response. I'm very sorry, but I didn't realize Facebook updated their guidelines two days ago. I just found out in another forum. You can now use likes and comments for your contests, i.e. no more use for 3rd party apps anymore. So, with the new guidelines, your contest conforms with the rules. I would change the navigation as mentioned earlier though. Best, Ruben

  • Everyone who says "Google will know" is obviously not an expert with proxies. To answer you question, yes there is a way to add +1s without Google knowing. Would I do it? No because it's a waste of time and resources, I agree with everyone else when they say it doesn't do much for rankings.

  • Hi Christopher Don't worry about the high bounce rate, most single page blogs face the same problem and it won't affect PR... I would however suggest that somewhere on the page you link off to other relevant content. This will encourage users to browse your website giving you more engagement and reducing your bounce rate at the same time! Steve

  • I did not test all combinations, but I did determine that it's faster to select the subset that your visitors will use and not to load the myriad of fluff icons. Best, Christopher

  • Hi Andy, First thing fix all of those errors and as many warnings as you can. Those typically are affecting your ranking, as well as your user experience, so those should be worked on before anything social or content related - in my opinion. Also, my suggestion would be to think big, but start small. It sounds like you have a lot of great ideas for going forward with the website, but I would recommend that you focus your efforts in one area and master it... I mean really knock it out of the park. For instance, if you have Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, instead of engaging half-a$$ed (which I'm not saying you are, I am just saying that managing 3 social media accounts can be WICKED challenging to do right in addition to everything else you are taking on), really focus on one - whichever is bringing you the most traffic or engagement and really dominate in that area. If you are a one-man-team trying to accomplish all of this, you may be spreading yourself thin in trying to tackle all of these different areas, that's why I suggest going after one area and once it is really rocking and it only needs a bit of maintenance, move onto the next - I fell you'll see a bigger return going this route. But, if you have a whole team pushing the website, I think you are going in the right direction. Good luck. Mike

  • Thanks again for the link. Have you tried this? Do you know what happens if you use this process and then get new likes, tweets etc? Do the numbers only show for the old URL or will they combine with any new social interaction?

  • Many do. Pinterest, Twitter, etc. They fetch those <a>'s and then rewrite the code via js. Googebot sees both, the one with the rel=nofollow and the one without as they are capable of executing javascript.</a> <a>There's no impact on your end, if that's what you are wondering, however, given the latest statements by Matt Cutts, widget links should be nofollowed and Pinterest isn't following Google's guidelines, but I guess those kind of penalties (penguin) do not apply to that kind of sites... although I think they should.</a>

  • Morning, Yes it is showing as a verified page on my Google Plus account. Should I be using both re=Publisher & rel=Author?. It is an ecommerce site, we do however have a blog that I could set up a personal profile for the posts and rel=author it? Would it be an issue if I did both pointing to the Google Plus business page? Thank You!

  • Howdy, Mr. Seymour already said it  - share it on both G+ profile and G+ Biz page BUT make it right. Check when is the appropriate time to share it on your profile (see when your followers and friends are most active). Then do the same with your G+ page. Another great G+ channel are the communities - try to find 2-3 relevant to your post/content and share it there.

  • I have figured this out so I'll provide the answer to clean up this thread.  The Product menu shows the products that have been reviewed with the count for each product.  When the Yotpo account is initially created, there are no reviews, so the system randomly selects four products and the count for each is 0.  When product reviews are posted by customers, this list will change accordingly. Thus far Yotpo is working great.  The person verification using social media accounts and the ability to post reviews to social media outlets like FB and Twitter are great features. Best, Christopher

  • Hello  Marc, It shows that my Followerwonk account is linked to my Moz account and I still cannot download the spreadsheets. At the top right it says HotelPlusPortal and then it shows the GuestSmile logo that we are signed into Twitter. What should I do?

  • Thanks for raising this question Chris!  I would also wanted to know this, as the competition of the apps in Play is much high. I guess, number of referrals/traffic to a particular app page may also count. but not sure. Lets wait for any positive proven record/answer.

  • Hi! We're sorry you're not seeing any social data in your dashboard. The good news is that we're aware of this problem and are hard at work fixing it. Our customer base has grown really quickly recently and we're starting to run up against limits that Twitter and Facebook impose on our access to their APIs. What this means is that our systems aren't able to get the number of retweets and mentions on Twitter and the number of likes on Facebook that we need to update your dashboard regularly. This known issues post is a bit old, but breaks down the exact problem that we're running into: https://seomoz.zendesk.com/entries/22951483-Missing-Social-Data We're still making changes on our end to attempt to work around these limitations but you may continue to periodically run into gaps in your social data while we work out the bugs. For the most part though, this issue has been resolved with Analytics, so when you're rolled in (which should hopefully be soon), you shouldn't see this problem anymore. Let me know if you have any questions. Have a great day! Best, Sam Moz Helpster

  • Thanks, that is how I interpreted it also. My understanding is that it is beneficial only if the content is, but in terms of providing fresh content, it is not.

  • It doesn't matter at all when you upload a video to YouTube. Unlike social platforms such as reddit, hacker news etc - there isn't some sort of algorithmic drop off if a YouTube video doesn't get immediate traction. Videos can sit dormat for weeks before then going viral when an influencer picks them up. The uploading time isn't important, but your wider promotional strategy will be and time may be a factor in that e.g. when do you send out a press release? When should you tweet about it?

  • Hi Laura, If you're looking for the the counter on your social media buttons to update to show the original number of social shares then it's not going to happen, I'm afraid. When you move domain, all of the social media buttons will reset their counters and show '0' for all of your articles. Having said this, you need to make sure that you set up 301 redirects from all your old pages to the new ones. If you are just doing a straight domain swap (i.e. all the URLs will stay the same except for the domain name) then you can add the following code into your .htaccess file: Options +FollowSymlinks  RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} \olddomain.com$ RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L] You will need to replace 'olddomain.com' with your old domain name and 'newdomain.com' with your new domain name. A word of warning here is that making changes to your .htaccess file (if you don't really know what your doing) can end badly, so make sure you pass it on to your developers - otherwise, you can use that plugin. All of the SEO benefits that your previous pages have gained (links, social shares, etc) will be stransfered to the new domain, but your social shares counters won't be updated. I would recommend giving the following article a read before moving to a new domain: http://www.webseoanalytics.com/blog/seo-guide-how-to-change-your-domain-name-without-losing-your-rankings/ Hope this helps! Matt
