  • Try doing a site comparison in opensiteexplorer.com. It will show you where you're losing in links to your competition.

  • I also just responded to a similar question: http://www.seomoz.org/q/benefits-of-1ing-a-sub-page-vs-root-page#post-66917 that I think will be helpful as well! In essence, it might not even make a difference for Google. But, what I like about +1ing a page is that it then shows up in your feed so others will see it and you'll probably get more eyeballs on the specific content. Hope that helps!

  • I wouldn't use rel=next/prev AND canonical to "View All". The canonical will almost definitely overwhelm the weaker rel=next and you'll be showing all search visitors the view all page. There's not a lot of data on rel=next/prev yet, but my testing with clients is going positively. If you aren't currently facing problems, I think I'd give it time to do its job. Pagination is a tough problem, and Google is not consistent about their preferred methods (some of their reps have gotten in pretty heated arguments on opposite sides). It's more than a little annoying, given how common of a problem it is. The only down side to rel=next/prev is that it's new and Bing currently doesn't support it.

  • The ones coming from Portland Oregon are a form of scraper many coming from: Ian Duggan, IP 204.11.219.89 21 Productions IP 204.11.219.96 Eric Fleischman IP 204.11.219.87 You will also see some from forex-ninjas, these are simply referral spam, they're trying to get you to visit the url and essentially create a visit. If you're using Wordpress install a plugin called IP Filter and place these IP's in to be filtered. This will take care of the ninjas and the others. 204.11.219.* 176.65.158.36 204.11.219.88 204.11.219.95 204.11.219.92 If you block all those IPs the visits will stop, that is what I have found.

  • Hello Gwen.imatrix, Thanks for coming to Q&A with your question! NAP is basically the foundation of all Local. To qualify for a unique Place Page, a business must have a distinct address and phone number. There's just no two ways about this. Should Google notice the issue, yes, you can expect a ranking drop and considerable confusion surrounding the accounts. Hope this information is useful to you. Good luck! Miriam

  • I believe that SEOMoz made a change to linkscape recently that may show larger movements in the last update. The are trying to include more sites rather then going depper into each site, this may have a big affect as i have seen a few stes drop as otehrs have metioned. It may be better to judge on future updates rather then the last one.

  • Hey Karl, I think Keri pretty much summed it up. You can edit the source in WordPress. On your WordPress dashboard home page, navigate to Appearance --> Editor. On the right sidebar of that page you should see a list of different links that navigate to different areas of your theme editor. Navigate to Header. This should be where the changes need to be made, but you can check all the pages for your theme if you are concerned. What pages are there will be a bit different for everyone depending on the theme.  I'd always recommend saving a backup of your original theme before making changes though! But I think taking Keri's advice and adding more quality content and getting rid of any suspect outbound links should help a lot.

  • Yeah I know how that goes. If they are running PPC I would suggest building a landing page with those ideas in mind and testing one versus the other, or use Google WSO to try it out for organic if they don't. That would let the numbers do the talking, and no one with a brain will turn down better numbers unless they are ego driven Other than that the other thing I was thinking was that it is totally possible the traffic increase is not good traffic, but I wouldn't go there until I got the landing page issues under control. If you are worried about this though a good indicator is usually the bounce rate, and time on site/page (which can unfortunately be tied to the landing page experience as well).

  • I don't know the frequency because I am only checking SERPs about once per day... but I do see a lot of shuffle in product and product category SERPs - especially in positions #4 through #20. Perhaps we are seeing "experimental SERPs".... google runs lots of experiments. .... or, maybe twitter or FB mentions are hitting these SERPs?

  • Theoretically speaking, a Domain MozRank jump from 5 to 9 in two weeks if enough new links were discovered. That is the only factor involved. MozRank and similar metrics are updated about once per month when the Linkscape crawl is completed and the data is processed. The figures will be stable for about 29 days each month then one day the new data is loaded and you will see the resulting change. A site moving from mR of 5 to 6 is a very positive change. For the same site to move from 5 to 7 is a huge jump and would require an exceptional amount of link building effort. Moving from 5 to 9 is not realistically possible. The likely causes are: an error on your part. The site's mR was either not previously 5 or is not presently 9. an error with Linkscape where it either did not see all the links before, or is improperly crediting links presently. an error with whatever tool you are using to see mR such as the MozBar. Maybe the page did not load properly and you were seeing the mR from the prior page. This is the most likely issue in my opinion. There are very few sites with mR of 9. Can you share the URL? If none of the above issues describe the situation I would recommend opening a ticket with the help desk (help@seomoz.org) and provide the details.

  • Thanks for the great replies Shane. Well I doubt I would use this tactic, I was just doing something and the idea popped into my head so wanted to get a second opinion. Christmas keywords are very competitive like you said, so was just thinking of ideas on how to get a new page ranking in such a competitive area.
