Schema.org helps ranking?
Well, yes and no. Like I said, it's indirect. It can have an effect on the algorithm in that using certain elements from Schema.org (and others like it) to create, for example, proper breadcrumbs on your site, which will in turn be picked up by Google and display those breadcrumbs within the SERP's. For example (and a little shameless plug), here is my site in the #1 position in the SERP's with Schema.org created breadcrumbs: https://www.google.com/search?q=2728+23rdwyandotte#hl=en&sa=X&ei=J_3YTrr8Neb20gGQ0JnSDQ&ved=0CBcQBSgA&q=2728+23rd+wyandotte&spell=1&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_cp.,cf.osb&fp=1ee69a25240f81e5&biw=1920&bih=979 Others you can see will have an image of a video show up, or even an author and such. Schema.org is more of a way of creating a unified method for crawlers to crawl and properly index ones website based on the usage of the Schema.org schematics. THey can help draw attention to your listing within the SERP's, but to my knowledge, do not influence your position within the SERP's. Hope that helps.

Our URLs have changed. Do we request our external links be updated as well?
I agree with Alan! Focus on sending link change requests to the highly authoritative sites ( old domains with good link profiles) that already link to you. Also it would be worth having some sort of social accelerator strategy in place in order to speed up the indexing process. Twitter is a good example! Cheers Ari

What's a good place for a copywriter to start researching the more technical aspects of SEO?
This is great, thanks everyone! I've read a lot of SEOMoz, but focused mostly on content-related information. Guess I'll have to get serious and get back into it

What Is The Preferred Url Structure For Se’s?
You question is a double edged sword and cuts both ways. There are both Pros and Cons to both the old and new URL structures. Hopefully my explanation helps. The old structure allows you the chance to keyword focus the page more. For example lets say your keyword is tacos and you are wanting to rule the taco market. The old URL path allows you multiple pages with focused keywords to different long tail keywords. For example you could do tacoking.com/mexico/tacos and tacoking.com/peru/tacos and that type of structure would allow you to pass link juice from the sub page(tacos) to the category page(peru or mexico) and so one. The down side is you could effect the user experience with too many pages and cause a higher bounce rate. Also it sounds like the current platform you use isn't very flexible and might not let you make multiple "folders." If you do use this make sure to plan it out and make it a nice user experience. On the other hand the new structure makes your website easier to maintain without a bunch of categories and sub-categories causing a vast improvement in the useability of your site. It makes it a lot easier to make multiple pages with custom URLs without researching the category it needs to fit under. It does cause you to keyword stuff your URL alot more than you currently have to. I hope this gives you some perspective of the different options you have. It sounds like the system you are currently using is really constricted and it isn't allowing you to have the proper freedom to SEO you content how you see fit. There are a ton of open source platforms that you can build a site off of that allows you to do both styles of URLs.Keep in mind that 301 redirects don't pass 100% link juice to the new page it is pointing to and you still have to SEO the new URL you are focusing on. I hope that helps!

How do you prevent the mobile site becoming a duplicate of the full browser site?
Hi Manoj, You shouldn't have a problem if you do it right. Google has separate bots, GoogleBot and GoogleBot Mobile. I can explain how it works but Matt already did it much better. Link to video is attached for you. watch?v=mY9h3G8Lv4k

Local SEO for franchises
Also try setting up a local business account with Google, Bing and Yahoo to get relevant local search. It won't increase your domains authority but it will help with traffic and reach. http://www.google.com/places http://listings.local.yahoo.com/ http://www.bing.com/businessportal Edit: create one for each location

Tread of backlinks after 301
The redirection of your old domain to the new one should clearlc indicate google that the site is actually the same, you have only changed the domain name. Google should handle this.

New folder structure
Hi Neil. The sites we have done are all new but from experience dealing with moving to new urls the best thing to do is create a mapping document in excel. It'squite easy if you know that for example: www.domain.com/berlin-hotel is moving to www.domain.com/de/berlin-hotel. Then all you need to do is put in the 301s based on the mapping and monitor WMT for issues - you will always miss something. From what you are saying however there is no logical structure to your site - which will make this harder. I have had to deal with this in the past too, you might just need to identify all of the more important pages and 301 these first and go via mechanical turk of get an intern in or something to just plough away and find all of your urls. If you have an XML sitemap you should be able to get them all pretty quickly and map from here. Hope this helps.

Changing URL Structure
Another thought might be to place a noindex on the new pages to start with and as we migrate and 301 redirect the old to the new remove the noindex on the new pages ? Thoughts ??

What constitutes duplicate content?
Hi Atul, Different languages is NOT seen as duplicate content. If you take the same article and present it in both English and Spanish, that would be considered two unique articles.

Linking Sister-Sites - Diapers.com Example
Agreed. From a branding/UX perspective it is key. I'm just making sure there isn't anything that can hurt things. Like you said though -- if it's for the user and natural it should be fine.

Competitor using shady SEO tactics but still ranks at the top in Organic listings
...but no matter what we do we just can't bump them out of the top position. What are you doing? Maybe your methods are ineffective? Recently we discovered that they have 7 or so .org sites set up claiming to be run by volunteers and their opinions are un-biased that "highly recommend" products from the main site's company. If this was my competitor I would be thankful that the volunteers are not being put to better use. Anyone know any other way to report things like this to Google? What rule of Google have they broken? KW's in the URL and getting volunteers to work on .org sites are not against any google rule. So, reporting them will not accomplish anything. Maybe your client can purchase a new KW domain and get enthusiastic volunteers to write awesome blog posts, become active posters in a kickass forum or produce other great content that is all hosted on his/her primary domain? Tell us more about your site and the methods you are using. Maybe you will get some great ideas for strengthening your site.
