  • Absolutely an internal blog on your website if it is related directly to the subject of the website is a great asset. I'll admit originally with one of my websites I produce a blog solely to get better search engine rankings and some of my articles were indexed quite high on the search results which produced traffic to the website all interested in its content. I now produced  blogs on my websites and find it more fulfilling because I enjoy spending my precious time working on it and know that it will hopefully be of interest and also it scratches my back in return by getting the articles indexed and also to some degree producing brownie points for my website rankings. If you produce an external blog obviously there's a very definite chance that Google will not associate your work to your website, and not improve your search engine ranking.

  • No direct hotline to Matt Cutts so I'm not going to guess whether directories or article directories were hit more than the other, if at all specifically within Penguin. Know this though - crappy SEO only directories and crappy SEO only article directories are both targets for elimination.  Given the leaps and bounds strides Google has made in the past 15 months, I'd suggest avoiding both at all costs.  Been suggesting that for years.  Hopefully more people will finally listen given that directories AND aritcle directories have clearly been taking hits in recent months.

  • I'd say check each site for incoming links, you may find some do not have any in which case it can't hurt to lose them and others have accumulated several. In that case keep those 301's or try and change the incoming links to point directly to your new domain "example.com" than you could drop the domain.

  • Hi Greg, a 301-redirect  will maintain the page's metrics. Open/create the .htaccess file in the root directory of your website. Add something like: RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^(.*)2/global$ http://www.opentext.com/2/global/products/enterprise-content-management.htm [L,R=301] Johannes

  • Hi Brad, Thanks for spending the time on the review and giving some specific advice. We will definitely try a pinterest page and also rewriting the meta descriptions. Obviously the descriptions are auto-generated but I am sure we can them read a little better so it does not sound like the encyclopaedia.

  • Hi Nakul, We're trying to determine if this is a huge undertaking or a possibility to compete. We don't want to waist our time. Do you need any more information? Thank you.

  • Yep, I think nofollow definitely makes sense sometimes. But if you have a short list of targeted tags and aren't creating dupe pages I think there is value in having those tag pages indexable. I see it as a way to easily create a page with focused content around a specific topic. If a site is using categories for that purpose then I definitely put nofollow on the tags, otherwise I use them sparingly.

  • Wouldn't you say much of SEO is based on opinion and speculation because Google will never reveal all their methods? Sure, there are some things that can be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, but they are few and far between.

  • Are you looking for Architects, New York?  Our new guide for 2012 has just been released. There are usually ways to work this stuff into content but as Nakul said, variance is key.
