Dive into vertical-specific SEO tactics.

  • There are actually very few Ecommerce companies doing video right in terms of SEO - including My Binding, who get outranked by YouTube for most of their videos. It's worth noting that putting product videos on a YouTube channel is invariably a bad strategy, so I'd look outside of channels and search for some good sites with securely hosted videos on them, rather than YouTube embed. However, in terms of content, i'd recommend looking at www.appliancesonline.co.uk who I think do superb product videos and have superb product pages all-round actually.

  • Hi Zach, I want to be sure I am understanding your question. I'm not sure what you mean by having both a Google Places page and a Google+ Local page for your business. Google Places is currently still in existence as a dashboard for Google+ Local. See: http://support.google.com/plus/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2623007 Now, your query is kind of special, because of the nature of your business. Back in early 2010, Google stopped showing true local results for web design and seo firms and certain other types of marketing firms (see: http://www.searchengineguide.com/miriam-ellis/google-shoves-their-liaisons-off-maps.php) I believe that there may have been 2 factors involved in this decision: 1) heavy spamming in those verticals and 2) a belief that such businesses are more virtual than local. As you can see in this Mike Blumenthal article from just last month, Google continues to treat these categories of businesses differently, when it comes to Local: http://blumenthals.com/blog/2012/11/12/google-local-search-results-where-none-have-gone-before/ Because of this, any efforts you make with Google's Local products will be hampered by the fact that they do not choose to display website design companies in their true blended/local results, though I believe it's still possible to exist within maps.google.com. However, Local SEO Andrew Shotland had a highly-publicized experience with his SEO company and Google last February that is worth reading about, if you haven't already: http://www.localseoguide.com/hey-seos-if-google-maps-calls-dont-answer/ I hope these resources will prove helpful, and if you would like to return with further clarification about what you mean in regards to having both a Google+ Local page and a Places Page, I would be glad to read it. Please, link to objects whenever you can. Thanks!

  • You're very welcome, Carin. The local search ecosystem is put together by David Mihm (and others, I believe) and you can find it at: http://www.davidmihm.com/blog/local-seo/local-search-ecosytem-fall-2012/ While Localeze does provide a vendor system (I checked into it too, and, like you, the volume thresholds are too high for most clients) they also provide a single-listing management option, that you would need to claim for your client (requires a phone verification to the business). This should let you correct anything that needs to be fixed. You can find the start of the listing management option in the link I've included below. Look at the "Small and Medium Business" option, and then click on "How to get an account". http://webapp.localeze.com/directory/get-started.aspx You're still looking at something like 2-4 months for everything to propagate out, and at least that long for Google to update. Thanks for your kind words Miriam!

  • We've had the same problem with several of our clients.  However, if you use rel=author then your Google+ profile will actually increase the position of the main site in the SERPs. Instructions for setting up rel=author are here: http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2539557

  • Speaking of site age at the top of the website I see this. http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml Does Google see that date and give them more cred?

  • I've looked at Google CSE yes.  It doesn't provide enough control over result styling and formatting, and isn't as up to date with URLs as I would like.

  • This one is an almost completely off-page SEO problem. There are small things you can do on-page that won't directly be seen like alt-tags, title attributes and file names but they are only small improvements - and having the keywords on the site will almost always beat those methods in the search results. Using related terms as well will help but it doesn't really solve the problem. I think the best strategy is a good content marketing plan - spreading out links with the required anchor text for keywords you want to rank for and surrounding the link with text containing related and variations of the primary keywords. Depending on the competition of your keywords this one could turn into a very long-term goal. The short answer to your question is: anchor text or more precisely a SEO focused content marketing strategy.

  • This is a really great question!  Here is a Mozinar on Reputation Managment to get you started. Depending on the name, the group might be actively SEOing for the name.  I think setting up a site, Google+ (with photo you want to use), using structured data on your site and actively SEO a blog with rel=author is a great start. There was a great article about optimizing for the Google Knowledge Graph back in June by Aleysa from site pro news.  http://www.sitepronews.com/2012/06/17/how-your-website-can-show-up-on-googles-knowledge-graph-a-spn-exclusive/ I would start here and I hope other people reply.  I'm interested in other opinions.  Again, Great Question!!

  • Hi Mr. Partyman, In my opinion, because you are already established with your first business at the street address, the best thing to do would be to get a Suite A, just for the second business. As Sanket has pointed out, it's critical that each business has its own phone number, business name and Google categories, as well as its own address, so be sure you are making these totally distinct. Hope this helps!

  • I would go into Google Places and make sure that your address is optimized Address on one line and suite number on second line.  If it isn't this way, I would re-verify the listing. Heres a link to the Google Places Quality Guidelines. Make sure you comply with all of these items.  It's only a page long so not a lot to do but definitely make sure you are in high compliance with them.

  • The citation finder tool at Whitespark (mentioned in one of my other comments) can also be really useful, Brett. One way you can use it is to check out the citations your local competitors have, so you can recognise and go after relevant citation sites that you may not have thought of. www.whitespark.ca/local-citation-finder/ Well worth a paid account for a couple of months at least. (No affiliation - just a great tool. And Canadian Note that as a Pro member here, there's even a perk for that: www.seomoz.org/pro-perks. Paul
